I'm not sure that this is described anywhere, so i want to tell you, that we fixed windows 98 reboot problem. This problem occurs at reboot or shutdown when you have Parallels Tools installed inside your Windows 98 inside your Parallels Desktop. Your VM hangs up or goes to bluescreen of death in that case.

So, until update you can use the weird workaround for this problem.

0. Run your Parallels Desktop and boot Windows 98 there
1. Create batch file with contents like this (not matter what written inside quotes)

@echo "Windows 98 hack"

2. Move it to Programs -> StartUp.
3. Open its properties, set "Close on exit" checkbox on Program pane.
4. Activate "Full-screen" radio button on the Screen pane.
5. Run this batch file from that folder. Your VM window should blink.

After that you can restart and shutdown your VM without any hangups. :)

And now, with pictures !! Every picture is clickable and links to the full sized version of it.

0. Run your Parallels Desktop and boot Windows 98 there. You can see that i have Parallels video driver installed inside my VM.

2. Go to the root of the disk (C:\). And type

echo @echo Weird workaround for Windows 98. > wwrnd.bat

This command creates the file wwrnd.bat with the stirng "@echo Weird workaround for Windows 98." as its contents. You can run this fily, typing wwrd.bat in the command line to check is it valid or not. It's valid in my case. After all manipulations type exit in the command line and close the window.

3. Open My computer and double click on drive C. You can see there the file, that we created some time ago. Rightclick on it and select Properties there.

Thank you Yknot for your prompt response and excellent instructions. Even a dummy like me could get it to work!

Thanks again.

Ynot!

Many thanks for that work-around! It does indeed work, although I don't understand why. One thing I might add, however. I just moved to a MacBook with reduced vertical screen space. So my Win98 window opens in a scrolling window. (What a pain! Especially since one has to do a Control-Option just to scroll.) Once I implemented this fix, I changed to a smaller Win98 screen size, but on re-start the old display settings were reinstated.

So, My one addition to the process is: if you plan to change your Windows screen settings, do that first! Also, if you subsequently need to change screen size, the 'fix' will need to be removed before the change will 'stick'. Then, of course, the fix can be re-applied.

Still, It was worth i!!

(Taken from here (http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?p=59121#post59121).)

Windows 98 freezes at shutdown with Parallels video driver installed. Rolling back the driver to "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)" fixes the shutdown issue but leaves you stuck at 640x480x16.

Here is the work-around to get higher resolutions and fix the shutdown issue. (http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?p=68655#post68655)

Note: I know this solution was permalinked to this forum months ago, but a simple forum search of "Windows 98 video" does not list that post in its results list. This is an attempt to fix that.

I've this problem (640x480 and 16 colors) with Win Me (french) and this workaround doesn't work.

I need to move PRLVIDEO.DRV, PRLVDD.VXD and PrlVideo from c:/Windows/System to the desktop. Else, Win Me shutdown after few seconds at the boot.

Any ideas ?
