I found a few things on google on this, but not sure what to do. The key values are all environment variables.

Hello guess2,
I know you've sent us a trouble ticket and our Support Group is working with you. I'd just like to post a general explanation here for your posts wouldn't stay unanswered.
Error 1606 might occur if one of the systems predefined locations points to a remote computer or network location that is not connected. This behavior can be caused by an incorrect setting in a registry entry.
So Windows registry modification is required. These modifications, if not done correctly, can cause serious problems to a Windows system. The articles on how to do that correctly are contained in Microsoft's Knowledge Base.
Best regards,

I have two Windows programs I am trying to install within Windows XP that runs inside Parallels for my MacBook. I have been getting an error message as follows from each program:
Error 1606. Could not access network location \\.PSF\.Home\Documents\. Same thing happens for *\Programs\. How can I install a program from CD or DVD when it won't point to the right folders? Is there a manual workaround? In an earlier posting, I note that there's a process to modify the registry - but that great care should be used. How can I get some additional help?
Thanks,
Charlie

I stumbled upon a fix for this after running into Error 1606 when installing QuickBooks 2008 in Parallels.
My error message referred to being unable to find \\.PSF\.Home\.Pictures
Here's exactly what I did. I don't know that this is a true fix but it seemed to work for me:
1) Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
2) In Windows Explorer I went to My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Parallels Shared Folders > \\.psf > .Home > .Pictures
3) Right click on .Pictures and go to Properties
4) Uncheck "Read Only"
5) Click "Apply"
6) Leave that window open and then click "Retry" twice on the error message.
QuickBooks then continued to install. If you get the error message again later during installation then do the same process above again (it looked like the Read Only box got checked again somewhere along the line and I had to re-do the uncheck and Apply.
If your error message refers to a different folder, then just find your particular folder name using the steps above and do the same change to the folder properties

I had exactly the same problem with a different folder while trying to install Microsoft Office. Did as you said and worked like a charm.
Thanks!

In the Parallels Desktop go to Devices...Shared Folders...Disconnect All. After Parallel/Windows XP logs you out and back in again you should be able to install the program that was giving the error 1606 message.

Hi folks. I'm waking this topic up.
I'm using Parallels 5 on Snow Leopard, and I just successfully installed Windows 7.
After installing some applications, I have two problems:
PROBLEM ONE
I used the above "Devices > Shared Folders > Disconnect All" trick to get around the 1606 error, and it worked. However, I don't really know what I did (it makes no sense that DISCONNECTING sharing made the missing folder available), so I don't know if I'm supposed to reconnect them afterwards or not. Also, what are the implications of either reconnecting them or not reconnecting them?
PROBLEM TWO
Possibly related to the above, the applications I installed in Windows 7 run just fine, but they can only see documents that live in the virtual machine. When I click "Open" I cannot browse to where my actual files are kept. (In my case it's on an external drive, but the apps can't even see the Mac's main drive.)
Current Devices Shared Folders have the following items checked:
- Connect All
- All Windows Disks
- Share Mac OSX folders in Windows
- All Mac Disks
It seems to me that everything is shared the way it ought to be, so what am I missing? Why can't my virtual machine see my Mac files?
