The thread was moved from Linux Guest OS Discussion by Xenos.
Or from FBSD, near as I can tell (at least, I can't get smbclient to talk to mac shares.
I can mount the shares fine from Windows.
I can also mount FBSD VM shares from Windows or Ubuntu.
My config:
MacOS 10.4.11
Parallels 3.0 Build 5160
Ubuntu 7.10, all current. (VM)
Windows XP, all current. (VM)
When I try the following line from ubuntu:
mount.cifs //<mac>/<macshare /<lcl_mount_point -o pass=<passwd>, it just hangs and eventually times out. From Windows, it connects instantly.
Anyone have any ideas?
thanx,

Hmm. As I look at it, I can't ssh into the mac from either VM, either.
I've got "Remote Logins", "Personal Folders" and "Windows Sharing" enabled, and the firewall is turned off. Still just hangs when trying to connect to it.
What gives?

Ack!!
Now I can't even ping the FBSD from the Mac!!! Even though I can ping out from the VM just fine. And, I can ping the VMs from each other just fine.
What the heck is going on? Network connections seem to be melting down....

I seem to be logging my way through this...
Ok, part of the problem is conflicting network addresses - it seems this outside network is using the same range of ip's as the shared networking in Parallels. So, I'm in the process of changing all the shared and VM ip's. That's getting the pings and the ssh's right, anyway.
Now, the issue is the last set of updates from Ubuntu seem to be causing the machine to lock up. Have to revert to an earlier version of the VM.
Yeesh.

Ok, I think I have it all figured out.
First, the network conflicts were a real problem, so I changed all the Parallel's shared network ranges to something less likely to conflict with a typical router configuration (not 192.168.{0,1}.xxx
Next, I had mistaken the Mac's address as the router address - it's not '*.1', but '*.<something else you set it to>' Duh. I was trying to mount the router address.
The prior Ubuntu update really hosed the VM. Thank goodness I had a backup. I re-copied that, got the ip's all straightened out, and was able to mount (and ssh) into the mac just fine. Then I allowed the update again (noticed there was one more...).
Everything seems to be working fine, now, after a shutdown and reboot of the VM.
Phew -
Something I suspect - Ubuntu really gets bent out of shape if it boots without a valid net connection. FBSD doesn't like it either, but since it's not a graphical interface (just a base server), it's easy to resolve. When X locks up on a graphics-only login machine, it's a real hassle.
Onward.
