Here is how I migrated my old Compaq windows 98 laptop into Parallels on my Macbook:
1. I took the Compaq laptop to the local computer shop and asked them to save the hard disk (it is only a 4 GB laptop) as an Acronis image file. They did it and burned it on a DVD and gave it to me.
2. Now I have Parallels on my 100 GB Macbook. I have new copy of Windows XP installed here already. I installed Acronis True Image trial version. It expires in 15 days. I finished what I wanted to do with it in the first 2 days.
3. Open the VM and create and create a new blank bootable (not a logical one) hard disk ( I create a 5 GB hard disk using the image tool) and attached it to the Windows XP.
4. Now I have the 8 GB hard disk1 of XP and a new 5 GB harddisk2 that I created attached to it.
5. Now open Acronis and use the recovery tool to recover the disk image (TIB file) and restore onto the 5 GB hard disk2.
5. Now shut down XP and open the VM preferences by clicking edit and make the new 5 GB hard disk2 as the first boot device. (Hard disk 2, advanced, boot options, connect to IDE 0.0).
6. Now restart the VM, I could boot the windows 98 laptop with all my original office 97 and other programs. Then you have to install the VM tools to get the good screen resolution (xvga). I still haven't got the network and audio working on this. It is a lot of trial and error but I am really happy because I can actually have my old 4 GB laptop now within my macbook booting in all its might within Parallels. I can use old office 97, publisher etc just for fun, It is a fantastic challenge though frustrating initially.
