Hello community!

As part of our continuing efforts to bring you the best virtualization solutions available, we’re proud to make Parallels Desktop for Mac Beta2 (Build 3094) early available to you. As with all previous updates, all registered Parallels customers will receive the final version of this update FREE!

Additional details are available on this page: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/beta_testing/

PLEASE REMEMBER: this is a beta software, and like any other beta software you should treat it very carefully. Do not install this Beta 2 into the production environment yet. Do backup your virtual machines before trying them with Beta 2.

As usual, any feedback is extremely appreciated at beta@parallels.com mailbox.

Best regards,
Tim and Parallels Team

I noted with much glee that the latest Parallels beta now supports high speed USB 2. Finally!! Thank you for implementing this. However, I have a question.

One of my main irritations with Parallels is the extreme slow sync speed of my PDA smartphone. (it is a T-Mobile MDA, which is actually a HTC Wizard in T-Mobile clothing. This is a Windows Mobile 5 device, and I am running ActiveSync 4.2 in Parallels.) I am hoping that the new USB 2 support will improve my sync speed; however the following note in the release notes concerns me: "NOTE! Current Build 3094 doesn’t support isochronous devices such as web cameras, microphones, etc."

What exactly is an isochronous device, and is my PDA/smartphone considered one? (note I am syncing using RNDIS mode) If RNDIS mode is incompatible then would switching to the older serial sync protocol help?

Thanks for the help.

Wingdo,

Tools for Boot Camp are not needed anymore. If you have them installed, please deinstall prior to first boot via Parallels Desktop.

Does this mean that from now there will only be one boot setup in Boot Camp (as opposed to the way we currently have to choose setups depending on how we are booting)?

First the good news:

Coherence improvements are awesome. It really makes you feel like you are using a unified OS. The one remaining feature I would ask for (and I know this is uber anal of me), is to somehow mask the rounded corners of the Luna theme. Because the Luna theme uses rounded corner windows, the tiny bit of the corner shows the desktop color through it in Coherence mode. It annoyed me so much I switched to the classic windows theme. It's ugly, but at least no ugly corner windows.

Now, the bad/ugly news:

Tried to use my Bootcamp FAT32 partition. Upon booting, it complained about needing to restart, but the app (and Parallels was apparently hung). Upon force quitting and restarting Parallels, my boot camp partition was trashed. Oh well. I'll probably reinstall Windows on a boot camp partition and try to use it in Parallels, but only after Parallels hits a final release.

Bug: Use Boot Camp is greyed out
1) Booted into Boot Camp.
2) Uninstalled tools for Boot Camp.
3) Booted back into OS X. Installed the new version.
4) Tried to create a new virtual machine and "Use Boot Camp" is greyed out. :(

These new features are nice:
The video driver has 16MB of memory so you can run 32-bit on a 30" at native 2560 resolution.
The option to turn on-off live action in the dock.

For you rounded corner problem, just use the same desktop wallpaper in windows that you are using for OS X. Make sure they are both either centered or stretched.

For you rounded corner problem, just use the same desktop wallpaper in windows that you are using for OS X. Make sure they are both either centered or stretched.

That would not help when you move a Windows "window" on top of a Mac OS X window. You can see the blue remainer in the corner of each window corner.

The only way to do it right is to apply some masking to Windows. Might be too much work for the return on investment, though.

Wow, I should have downloaded it 10 minutes ago when I got to the server no problem. I waited until I booted into BootCamp first!

It is downloading, but slowly.

I wonder if there is going to be a way to avoid the "profiles" thing when I boot into windows (choose one of two profiles) which is rather annoying.

May I suggest that we create new threads for issues/questions with this new beta rather than using reply in this thread? It gets really hard to follow a thread with hundreds of posts.

I noticed when I installed 3094, Windows saw a different video controller. Now when I started my ubuntu 6.10 VM, I no longer get anything over 1024x768, even though the are enabled in the VM profile. I am assuming the fundamental video architecture changed, and it is no longer a "modified" vesa video controller. Will Parallels be releasing a linux 2.6 video driver ?

Thanks and regards,

Jeff

I'm still getting a BSOD 0x0000007B when starting Windows in Parallels. :( In addition, I can't even boot with Boot Camp. After the progress bar, the screen just remains black.

I wish I at least knew why this is so... as of now, Parallels is completely unusable to me and a few others, while most other people have it working.

do we need to uninstall boot camp within the windows environment? if so, can do, just wanted to check because it'll involve two more activations. one to get into bootcamp, one to get back. :)

Looks good so far. Was pretty shocked to see my Visual Studio icons in the OS X dock. Then I quickly turned that feature off. With 3 dev VMs open all the time, thats too many icons for my dock.

And I'm depressed to see the Parallel's dock icons still all named the same thing. Oh well, the rest of the app is very solid.

I might even try my TomTom under Windows with USB 2...

Arrgghhh. Full screen mode is completely broken on multiple displays.

I run without coherency (I have 3 VMs running). If I set a VM to full screen, it now ALWAYS grabs my primary display. In the past it would grab the display where the window lived when I pushed the full screen button. Now I can't get the VM on the display i want.

Definately a bug.

I feel I owe it to the developers and the other members of this forum to report that I had an unbelievably successful initial install of this version of the beta using my Boot Camp partition. The VM came up immediately, and automatically installed the Parallels Tools on the Boot Camp disk. You have no mouse or keyboard control during that time, but the process is automatic, including a reboot. You have to be very patient, as it took several minutes to complete on my MB Pro 2.16 Core Duo. Once the reboot is finished, you have mouse and keyboard, including any keyboard mappings modified to do Ctrl-Alt-Del in Boot Camp. That was excellent. I did a reactivation of my off-the-shelf Win XP when prompted, and so far so good. I tried out all my usual software and works fine. The coherency mode makes it seem like a dual OS desktop, as intended. I am now VERY impressed with Parallels. Thanks for getting Boot Camp disk utilization right, Parallels team.

Hi guys,

just bought my MBP and installed Parallels one week ago. I installed build 3036 and was blown away with the coherence mode. Instantly hooked, well done.

With the latest beta coherence stopped working, as I saw one earlier post on in this forum as well. I've done all the usual stuff, reboot the Mac, reboot XP, reinstall Parallels, reboot Mac again and it still shows up as not enabled with the option the enable it greyed out in the parallel tools.

I'll probably revert to 3036 and hope that it won't screw up my XP installation and hope for a resolution quickly.

Keep up the great work.

Previous Parallels beta was working fine for both booting Bootcamp partition from Mac OS X + separately. Now my Bootcamp partition seems gone (can't even boot into Bootcamp now at all ...). Beta 2 works fine for a file Parallels HDD, but bootcamp partition is broken.

How much HDDs does your Mac have?

MBP Core 2 Duo with 1 HDD, 2 partitions (15GB for Bootcamp).

Where is your Boot Camp partition located?

2nd partition on the MacBook Pro drive (basic deployment option for Bootcamp).

I installed the previous beta, and was able to use my previous XP VM with coherence and everything working fine. However, I have yet to boot with my Boot Camp partition. Every time I boot to my BC partition, I get a BSOD. It's usually PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED. This is the case for Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, and Start Windows Normally. With this beta I uninstalled Parallels Tools for Boot Camp but still am not able to boot to my Boot Camp partition.

What gives?

I initially installed the 3094 build over 3036 and it seemed to be going ok.. When the Guest OS (WXP Home) started up, it popped up some stuff about new video drivers..I selected the default (top) choice...I THINK it hiccuped...

When I went to restart the Guest OS, it locked on a black screen after the few second or two of the log on logo...

I uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times with the same black screen result. I have now gone back to 3036 which appears to be ok.

Awaiting Beta 3....

So I installed the new beta before removing parallels bootcamp drivers, got too excited and didn't ready everything...

So I installed back the old beta, booted in the Parallels and tried to uninstall the BootCamp Parallels driver, told I had to do it in BC so I rebooted. Then I see that I have an HAL.dll error in Bootcamp. Is there anyway I can remove the BootCamp Parallel drivers from within parallels or to fix the hall.dll error without reinstalling? Thanks.

After reading the release notes for 3094 I'm ready to make the jump from Boot Camp only to Boot Camp + Parallels!

There are a few questions that don't seemed to be answered by reading through the cornucopia of threads on the Boot Camp + Parallels issue:

1.) If you have already activated Windows XP on Boot Camp, what is the procedure for having activation work in Parallels and Boot Camp?

1a.) The Release Notes (http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/beta_testing/) say to only activate once in Parallels, but what if you've already activated in Boot Camp?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

LOVE the new mac dock implementation!! Cant wait to work out the bugs... which are bothersome...

Runnin a MBPro, 2GB, external 20"monitor.

Was able to run coherence in my external monitor without issue in the previous beta. Cant now. It places the toolbar in the middle of the monitor.

Cant run full screen in the external monitor. It places full screen on the MBP.

Coherence doesnt identify screen borders properly. In fact, Parallels doesnt seem to either. The virtual machine window pops up under the top menubar. You can drag WIN programs under the menu bar as well.

I had coherence mode set to come on automatically when the VM started.

I suggest you turn this off prior to starting the VM for the first time under Beta 2

I had it lock up with the windows screen in a wierd resolution and the screen halfway across in slide mode.

So, once again TURN OFF startup in Coherence Mode till after you have installed Parallel tools

rufosx, vilkraider - which Macs do you have? Which graphics cards do they have onboard?

OK - I have a MacPro and just purchased Parallels to make use of my Bootcamp installation while in OS X.

I installed the 3094 per the instructions, but Parallels VM does nothing on attempt to boot the VM. The CPU is pegged for quite a while but nothing is happening in the bios window.

I have 2 hard disks, the second hard disk has XP on it (essentially a standard windows install with Bootcamp drivers). My other disk is OS X 10.4.8 with a small partition in FAT32 for transfering files back and forth. In disk utility, the windows XP disk (NTFS) shows up first.

I have Windows XP Pro 32 bit retail.

When I try to run the VM, the small FAT32 partition is unmounted. Nothing else happens. SInce then, I have rebooted into XP using bootcamp and it is OK. There is no Parallels option. I went back into OS X and now it unmounts the FAT32 partition and does not return it when I close Parallels. I can remount it when I use disk utility.

It seems like Parallels is trying to find XP on the small partition I made (using Bootcamp) instead of the second disk I made installing XP like on a PC.

My mount info:

/dev/disk0s2 on / (local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (local)
fdesc on /dev (union)
<volfs> on /.vol
/dev/disk1s1 on /Volumes/WinXP_Pro (local, read-only)

automount -fstab [181] on /automount/Servers (automounted)
automount -static [181] on /automount/static (automounted)
/dev/disk0s3 on /Volumes/TRANSFER (local)

Hope I can get a procedure for when I return from the break.

Thanks for any help.

I replaced the previous beta with this one. I can confirm two issues that others have reported:

Hotsync with Palm Treo 650 is not working. Windows detects the USB device (I hear the new-device sound effect) but the Hotsync Manager doesn't fire up. This didn't work under the previous beta either, but does work on the release build.

Coherence mode on dual monitors is broken. When I switch from OS Window to Coherence mode, the window slides from my second monitor over to the main one then turns completely black.

This is on a 17" C2D MBP hooked up to a 30" LCD.

Coherence isn't working for me now either. Core Duo Macbook, 2GB RAM, running off of an NTFS Boot Camp partition. Am not able to enable the option in Parallels Tools Center, and when clicking on the options in the menu/sidebar, Parallels does nothing.

Not that I'm ungrateful or anything - but these extra tweaks such as Favorites, combined with Coherence, means I can finally ignore the Windows desktop and Start bar for good!

Here's my hard disk configuration:

mount
/dev/disk0s2 on / (local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (local)
fdesc on /dev (union)
<volfs> on /.vol
/dev/disk1s1 on /Volumes/Windows (local, read-only)
/dev/disk1s2 on /Volumes/FAT32 (local)
automount -nsl [205] on /Network (automounted)
automount -fstab [214] on /automount/Servers (automounted)
automount -static [214] on /automount/static (automounted)
/dev/disk2s6 on /Volumes/LaCie Disk (local, nodev, nosuid)

I was wondering if my FAT32 partition on my second hard drive might be the clue. Then again, perhaps you should consider the incidence of the partitioning scheme itself. For instance, the partitioning scheme for Intel Macs is GPT (GUID Partition Table); however, my second hard disk, the one with Windows on a first NTFS partition, has a MBR (Master Boot Record), as it came from a normal Windows PC!

Once Parallels can run my Boot Camp copy of Windows, I'll be ready to delete my Vista Virtual Machine. I'm very impressed with this beta of Boot Camp. As far as I can perceive, it only has one shortcoming: it should allow for dragging and dropping files and/or folders to be copied or moved from any Finder window and any Windows Explorer window, not just to the Windows desktop. It seems to be working all right in the opposite direction.

Besides, everything seems to be working with Vista now!

Other than that, there's only one big thing to accomplish: 3D acceleration. When will that arrive?

You've produced an impressive peace of software, Parallels team. Congratulations!

No problems here with the upgrade. I notice a significant performance boost especially with coherency mode on this update from the previous version. I'm still a bit skeptical on throwing my bootcamp partition at Parallels at this time. Have they *definitely* fixed the activation issue as claimed?

Can't get over how many things were fixed in this beta:

1) FAT32 access to Boot Camp Partition works.
2) No reactivation, except for first launch into Boot Camp via Parallels.
3) Seems to work faster.
4) Obvious increase in speed with USB.
5) No video problems with Coherence on 24" iMac.

EVERYTHING looks and works better. This is a monumental improvement over Beta 1, and even with the issues that dogged Beta 1 THAT release was pretty darned good.

Guys, keep up the outstanding work!!!!

I just installed the new beta. Vista RTM seems to hang on the startup screen (Black background with green status bar).

Vista will boot properly in safe mode, I'm not sure what's causing it to freeze up in normal mode. (Is there a verbose mode?)

I had this problem in beta 1 with Vista RC2 - it started working after a while.

I just installed build 3094. Works flawlessly. The big problem I had with Beta 1 was that XP did not recognize my USB memory stick. This version recognizes it immediately.

The graphics seem noticeably faster on my Imac 20 core 2 duo.

Great job, team.

upon booting a parallels VM using bootcamp (fat32), it sits on the login screen and I can't use the mouse or keyboard. It's completley unresponsive. Neither Parallels tools for bootcamp, nor parallels tools were installed into my bootcamp before.

Anybody else experiencing this?

Otherwise, things are looking mighty fine. EXEs in the dock is cool, but I might want this disabled now and again, is there an option somewhere for this? all the closing/opening of windows apps is nauseating with the dock sliding about

I get two choices in Boot Camp - Profile 1 and Parallels.

In Parallels, I can use the down arrow to select Paralles profile and boot.

In Boot Camp, keyboard is unresponsive and can't press enter to select Profile 1.

Any ideas how I can boot into Boot Camp directly in order to remove the Parallels tools?

Hey Don,

Sorry to hear that but glad I'm not the only one. I'm trying to find out if there's a verbose startup mode right now (besides safe mode). As of right now, it's a bit tricky to find Vista troubleshooting documentation. The last think to load is crcdisk.sys. It seems like safe mode&networking doesn't work. I'll come back if I find anything else out.

Well, after trying a normal boot, and then going into safe mode, I see this as one of the entries in the event log: "AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x70), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance."

As to whether that error is the cause of the failed boot or not, I do not know.

- How many HDDs does your Mac have?

On one of the four disk (labeled Windows). Uses the entire partition.

32-bit Windows XP Professional SP 2

/dev/disk2s2 on /Volumes/Share (local)
/dev/disk4s2 on /Volumes/Backup (local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)

Notes:
1) Backup is a LaCie firewire/usb drive.
2) On occassion, the /dev/disk#s# changes if the drives are moved around in the bays. Mac OS X and Boot Camp do not seem affected by changing the disk order even if the disk/slice #'s change.

Hello,

I installed the new build and everything is working fine - my applications are showing on the OS X dock, except one. The application is Dynacom Accounting - http://www.download.com/Dynacom-Accounting-Startup-Edition/3000-2066_4-10600326.html)

I assume that this is just a slight bug or a design problem with the application, but since it works perfectly with all my other Windows apps I guess that this can be fixed!

Thank you, and Parallels is incredible!

I have just recently purchased parallels and installed the new beta to try out the boot camp abilities. Parallels works great as far as i can tell. (aside from locking up my machine twice, due to windows trying to scan the HD at startup) I am really impressed with the functionality so far, but Windows will not allow me to reactivate.

for those of us who already had a windows installation in boot camp that was activated, is there any way to "deactivate" that installation and reactivate it within Parallels? And, if that is possible, will that make my boot camp installation no longer usable as a "dual boot" OS?

I am somewhat of a newcomer to the virtualization arena, so i apologize if this is a dumb question.
any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Like an earlier poster, I'm also having WIndows Activation issues. I'm running Parallels off an already-created and already-activated XP Pro SP2 Boot Camp partition (NTFS 80 GBytes....total HDD size is 160 GBytes). I get prompted to activate when I launch Windows in Parallels from the Boot Camp partition....and my already-activated Windows 25-digit product key is not accepted "According to our records, the number of times you can activate Windows with this product key has been exceeded.....". Help, please! And no, 'buy another product key' isn't an acceptable answer ;-)

I second that motion! Actually, it would be great if coherence could pay attention to any custom window mask used by applications like Windows Media Player. Its only slightly annoying to see the background on the corners rounded windows, but it's really bad when you try to use Windows Media player and the whole window area that is supposed to be masked off shows up as the background. There are other applications that do this too but WMP is the most obvious example.

Hello,

The new beta is working great for me on my MPB - but I can't for the life of me figure out how to define the application shortucts that should show up under the new 'Applications' menu. Any suggestions?

And please - please consider allowing CMD-tab to fall through to the MacOS (maybe as an option) the way that CMD-, does so I can switch away from my coherence apps as easily as I do regular Mac apps. :)

Thanks,

You just have to call the Microsoft activation center and said you install the last version of Parallel on your MacIntel and they give you the new number.

But I have to say that reactivation number is a pain in the a.... for me too.

For those having coherence issues after upgrading from the previous beta: The entry for the parallels coherence service is not cleanly removed when uninstalling the previous version of parallels tools. This causes the installer of the new version of parallels tools to not fully install the coherence service.

1. Uninstall old version of Parallels tools, reboot VM.
2. Start Menu --> Run --> sc delete "parallels coherence service"
3. Reinstall Parallels tools, reboot VM.

Coherence should now work.

Parallels-

3094........WOW! Thank you for your continued effort to place your latest work in our hands. I've been a registered user for several months. I've thrown caution to the wind every time you have announced a new version, beta or alpha. I'm not a gamer. I'm using bland Windows XP Professional. AND, I've never had any of the aggravation with installation, registration, coherence, etc.! I print to a network and USB printer using the drivers intented by the manufacturers. I've used shared folders without problems from the first version it was offered. I have a VPN established and connect to my work server, again with each upgrade. So my congratulations to you. And for all those who continue to bitch, let them use Virtual PC.

This new build is fantastic. Having a FAT32 partition for Boot Camp, this delivers everything I was hoping for from 3036, and so much more!

Question: Does the XP installation still require multiple profiles, or are they an unused hangover from when I had installed Parallels Tools for Boot Camp with 3036?

Request: Make Windows programs respect the sanctity of the Mac menu bar. When 'fullscreened' they position themselves below it (nice), but I can still drag them underneath... it would just feel so much better if that didn't happen :)

Fantastic work guys (and girls?) - the speed with which you add new features is astounding. Puts Microsoft to shame for their poor treatment of Virtual PC.

Thanks so much for adding the better UI features! :P

Coherence is horribly broken in the new beta (3094). It worked great in 3036. Here's my symptoms:

I use Coherence mode on my 2nd monitor (the MBP display). My 2nd monitor is aligned in the middle (or so) off to the right of the 30" monitor. Entering coherence mode changes the resolution to 1440x1187 where it used to be 1440x900 in the previous beta. It seems as if Parallels has changed how it does screen size detection and is now looking at the VERY bottom of the whole desktop space. This has rendered coherence mode completely useless.

Also, I've noticed that entering and leaving coherence mode and/or changing the window size sometimes results in rather odd window sizes, but not always.

I'll try fiddling with other settings, but for now it's kind of broken for me.

Machine: MBP with a 30" 2nd monitor (used as the primary)

A fine update. I've had no problems whatsoever with my MBP (1.83 GHz, 1.5MB, Boot Camp partition under Parallels). The reactivation issue when booting between Boot Camp and Parallels is gone. Coherence is much better--love the integration with the OS X dock. And USB 2 is working well with my Cruzer thumb drive. The more you guys refine Parallels, the less visible it becomes.

Hi all - first post, and first off, thanks to everybody who's been involved in creating this amazing software. I'm breaking in a brand-new macbook pro and a freshly-minted parallels, and I'm very, very impressed.

I installed XP pro on it today via boot camp and Parallels saw it just fine, it worked both in parallels and when booted to, no dual-activation issues.

Unfortunately I decided to push my luck and see if I could run both XP and Ubuntu at the same time, which was a bad idea in retrospect. Each VM had 512mb, and my total system ram is only 1 gig (right now), so running both at once thrashed the disk to death as (I assume) it madly tried to swap everything it was doing. It locked up hard enough doing this that I couldn't use the controls or quit Parallels, and in the end I had to hard reboot, which unfortunately destroyed my bootcamp partition. I can't repair it, as there's apparently nothing to repair - the windows installer just sees a blank partition for C:.

Not a huge deal, as I was mainly just testing it and can reinstall, but a good reminder that both Parallels and Boot Camp are still beta, and this probably shouldn't be used quite yet in critical production systems. I think I'll probably ditch boot camp for now and just run XP in Parallels, as that should address most of my limited XP needs. I'm more psyched about Ubuntu, truthfully.

Looking forward to future updates to this insanely useful software.

Nope. Sounds like you might have an incomplete DMG.

Since installing Beta 2 on my Macbook with a Boot Camp partition, I've had all kinds of problems. I did uninstall the Parallels tools correctly from within Boot Camp.

First off, everything seemed to work, but networking didn't. I eventually uninstalled the Parallels tools but still networking did not work. So I uninstalled Parallels, then reinstalled it. I then noticed that the "Shared Networking" bit was greyed out when re-setting up the VM. Rebooting the Mac and uninstalling then reinstalling Parallels had no effect- this is what the FAQ said to do.

I eventually figured out that I could get the "Shared Networking" ungreyed by making sure that "ethernet adapter en3" was listed and turned on under Network prefs in System Preferences.

Meanwhile, in the VM Windows keeps insisting on being reactivated. I can't, because the networking doesn't work. Several VM reboots later and now I'm locked out of Windows because I haven't activated it. Networking still does not work, so I still can't network.

I have gone through every combination of network settings and I still cannot get the VM to see the network. Before uninstalling the tools, I even tried switching to the old network driver. No luck.

I then was able to boot into Windows in safe mode and get the tools reinstalled. Coherence now works, but I can only ever see the nag screens and failed activation attempts because, still, I can't get the VM to see the network!

I think if I can get networking to work, my problems will be solved. I should be able to activate Windows and move on. What could possibly be causing all of this? I can still boot into Windows fine through boot camp. Is there a way to make the Paralles VM "start over" so that I can use it and tinker, trying to fix the networking from within the VM? Why did Windows not give me three days to activate?

After doing what wreck said to do it works great!

Okay, and now Parallels keeps telling me to turn off internet sharing, but internet sharing is not on. Whatever this new Beta did it right and truly hosed my network settings.

edit: I totally trashed every network related plist in OS X, uninstalled Parallels, tried to make sure no trace of it was left. Started over; reinstalled Parallels. Lots of rebooting. STILL NOTHING. New, weird stuff happens each time. Resolution changing no longer works. Mouse drift. I am begining to fear that there is no solution; that Parallels has just utterly hosed my machine.

Definitely a great improvement.

I am wondering, I have difficulties when my MBP sleeps while Parallels is open. It has difficulty waking, and Parallels seems frozen. I am running Win Vista Ultimate. I had to switch between window, full screen and coherence mode a few times to get vista to "wake up" again :)

Another issue I have seen when running in Coherence mode is that there are parts and pieces of the Vista desktop that don't get hidden and they stay on the Mac desktop. Sorta unsightly, but nothing serious.

I just did everything from scratch for the new Beta, most everything is fine.

But, I installed CA Anti-Virus while running under Parallels, then when I ran under Boot Camp, it said it was disabled, and got some kind of error when I tried to enable it. I reinstalled it under Boot Camp, and now when running under Parallels, it again is disabled and can't be reenabled without reinstallation.

I am confused. Page 172 of the user guide that was released with Build 3094 states:

"To use Boot Camp Windows installation in a virtual machine you have to install Parallels Tools
for Boot Camp on it. Parallels Tools and Parallels Tools for Boot Camp will not interfere with
the system when you boot into it via Boot Camp. "

So...should I remove the Parallels Tools that I installed on my BootCamp parition that I installed when running XP natively (back in the previous beta build)?

Thanks!

Have been able to get Parallels to work well with XP on the Boot Camp partition, which is excellent. However, when attempting to see how it works with XP on the Mac side, I get as far as a message saying Parallels Tools needs to be updated (which is expected) and the Mac spinning color wheel - it stays in that color wheel cursor mode for as long as I like to wait and am obliged to force quit to get control again.
Any ideas, thanks.

Parallels has now entirely hosed my XP partition. It can't boot in Boot Camp or the VM, and OS X can't see it. At no point did I do anything other than boot, and shut down normally. This is a very buggy version, much worse than the last beta.

with all the problems with parallels not detecting boot camp partitions and windows installed on separate hard disks, why not just have a drive selection dialog and let the user pick a mounted drive?

if it's for simplicity sake to try to auto-detect it for the user, then its counter-productive because it is making it harder to get it working when a manually selected drive should work.

if there's a technical reason, please share if you can or at least tell us there is a reason but you can't share it.

thanks.

I upgraded from 3036 to 3094 earlier today. I ran the 3036 uninstall first and then ran the 3094 install. When I started Parallels my registration was still recognized and so was the inventory of VM systems.

My system has 3.0Ghz Pent 4 proc with HT Technology (2 threads) and 2.0Gb Ram. I am currently running WinXP-Pro with 636Mb ram and Ubunto-6.1 with 512 Mb ram on Mac OS X 10.4.8. The Ubuntu system is currently downloading about 35 application updates and the WinXP system is running FireFox browser retrieving some web pages - and I am writing this post.

If I activate the DashBoard with an iStat-Pro widget it shows the system is running both threads at about max capacity. The total CPU is running about 95%. Still, the performance is quite reasonable. If I switch OS X desktops sometimes the Cube rotation shows a very slight delay.

Still, NOT Bad!

So far, everything I have tried is working great. The only thing I wish I could figure out is how to stop the WinXP apps from showing in the OS X Doc :(

Unable to get boot camp volume to boot in parallels .. both the previous and the current (3094) beta give me the same error inside the virtual machine:

Booting from hard disk ... Error loading operating system

Given it's unmounting the disk properly before booting the VM, and that when I fiddle with the IDE chain it gives me a whole bunch of different errors (the kind you'd expect when it doesn't find a disk at all) .. I'm pretty sure it's finding the disk properly. Just not the OS :(

This is a fully functioning boot camp disk.

To answer your specifics:

- How many HDDs does your Mac have?

2 x 500g disks

- Where is your Boot Camp partition located?

2nd hard disk (all by itself) .. NTFS formatted

- What is the OS installed on Boot Camp exact name and version? Is it 64-bit one or 32-bit one?

Windows XP Professional, 32 bit

- open Terminal, issue the "mount" command and post its output here please

/dev/disk1s2 on / (local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (local)
fdesc on /dev (union)
<volfs> on /.vol
automount -nsl [167] on /Network (automounted)
automount -fstab [194] on /automount/Servers (automounted)
automount -static [194] on /automount/static (automounted)
/dev/disk0s2 on /Volumes/Untitled (local, read-only)
/dev/disk2s0 on /Volumes/disk2 (local, nodev, nosuid, read-only)

If it matters, here's the rest of the configuration:

Mac Pro, 2.66ghz
2g ram
ATI X1900 video card
24" cinema display (this was an issue for a while with boot camp until the mac pros got a firmware upgrade about a month ago)

I have to chime in here...up until this point, I've been firmly on the side of Boot Camp, as I run some fairly processor-intensive apps (Rhino 3D, AutoCAD, etc.), but now after installing build 3094, I'm finally to the point where I can run these apps via Parallels for smaller tasks without having to completely reboot. I had installed some of the previous betas with very limited success, as I couldn't get it to read my FAT 32 formatted Boot Camp drive, but this release seems super snappy.

A great big thank you to the dev team and beta testers who have made this a great product!

Ignore that. The important note from the download site is to uninstall those tools (Parallel Tools for Bootcamp). Regular Parallel tools can be left or uninstalled - they will prompt you to be upgraded after the VM boots. Parallels now handles that (installation of what it needs for bootcamp and the prompting for a new install of the Parallel Tools) and it handles the selection of the correct hardware profiles. Pretty amazing update overall...

I upgraded from 3036 to 3094 earlier today. I ran the 3036 uninstall first and then ran the 3094 install. When I started Parallels my registration was still recognized and so was the inventory of VM systems.

Not quite sure what kind of hardware you have here... Are you saying you are running a pirated version of OS X on unsupported hardware? Probably not the right forum to be discussing this nor expecting support questions to be answered.
That being said, to turn off Apps showing up in the Dock, go to the Appearance section in Parallels Desktop preferences and turn off the option to show applications in your Dock to not show them...

I have two OS X user accounts. One is administrator, the other user.

I installed parallels 3094 beta 2 under the admin account.

You could always try to save the permissions for the folder of settings and set them to be owned by you (or admin) but give everyone in the same group read/write privileges. You could even make it so as "others" can read and write.

A couple of tips that have been mentioned here:
• Be sure to turn off coherence before launching your VM for the 1st time after the update or your VM may seize when attempting the resolution switch.
• Make sure you UNINSTALLED the Parallels tools for Bootcamp before starting the VM from the Bootcamp partition

I have been amazed how well this beta has worked. I am having intermittent problems with who owns the Command-Tab (windows or the Mac) and therefore who gets to switch between programs, but that is pretty minor.

Keep up the great work guys. Thank you! Now that you are adding USB 2.0 support to a free upgrade, it has become evident that what we will be shelling out money for when the next major upgrade comes will most probably be 3D support. Thank You!

Just installed the 3094 beta.
In my Bootcamp partition, Windows crashed during updating of the Parallels video driver, now it displays only the mouse and a black screen.

Then I installed windows in a new virtual image.

While coherence in beta1 was working fine on my dual monitor setup, beta2 certainly is not.
I prefer parallels to run coherence on one display, but I am unable to do that with the new beta.
Parallels initially displays the taskbar across both displays and will randomly switch to display 1, some later to display 2 and back again to both. This is very annoying, but it is a beta after all.

The trick mentioned above of deinstalling the P tools and shutting down the coherence service and reinstalling P tools again did not work for me, probably because the VM was created with beta2.

Does anybody know another solution to forcing Windows (or Parallels) into single screen mode on a dual screen setup?

Thanks in advance!

I tried the last Beta on my Intel Mac mini, and it was great but buggy. I also got nervous about the authentications that were needed when I switched from Boot Camp to Parallels and back. I got another Windows disk -- legal -- and made a virtual disk from that.

When I installed this version, I booted up, thinking I had chosen the new virtual machine. I didn't. I booted up instantly in my Boot Camp copy. It worked perfectly, except that it announced that I had used up all my installs. Grr. Now I have to phone India or somewhere.

And when I tried to boot up in Boot Camp, so I could make my Parallels Tools for Boot Camp all right, I have a Hal32.dll that missing or corrupt, and it won't boot. But Parallels starts up fine.

Can I remove the configuration file somehow from the Boot Camp partition? I'm not sure how to proceed, except, God, Windows is an eternal nag.

Disaster.

I have been running Parallels with XP successfully since I bought my Mac Pro about 10 days ago. The installer on disk refers to it as 1940 with a date of Oct 11 2006 - is that build 1940?.

I tried to install 3094 but it failed to recognise my VM or my original serial number. I then tried to reinstall my original version from CD after removing all the Parallels elements that I could find (using the uninstaller and manually).

In spite of deinstallation the old installer gave a message "The chosen volume contains software which is newer than the software you are installing." When I proceeded I got the alert "You cannot continue. There is nothing to install." That was that.

I then tried to install 3094 again but the installer hung 3/4 of the way through - several attempts, several restarts.

I am not able to install either my original or the new version. Where do I go from here?

I noticed when I installed 3094, Windows saw a different video controller. Now when I started my ubuntu 6.10 VM, I no longer get anything over 1024x768, even though the are enabled in the VM profile. I am assuming the fundamental video architecture changed, and it is no longer a "modified" vesa video controller. Will Parallels be releasing a linux 2.6 video driver ?

Thanks and regards,

Jeff

I had a similar problem with Fedora Core 6. Switching to thousands of colors instead of millions let me increase the resolution beyond 1024x768. I also added 1280x800 as a custom resolution in the Parallels preferences, but I'm not sure that actually helped.

This releas is absolutely amazing. I'm sorry but I never imagined Parallels would nail it this good. Why am I so over the moon?

Coherence + Favorites + Hidden Toolbar option + Command Tab between *all* apps = COMPLETE INTEGRATION!!!!

And a tip for you all: In your ~/Username/Library/Parallels folder there is folder with all your favorite windows applications in when you add them (right click in dock and add to favorites)....the best thing? I can now launch any of my favorite windows apps via Quicksilver.

INCREDIBLE.

If they nail multiple monitor coherence and BootCamp properly we'll be all set.

The only other things I'd like to see:

1: A way to have a partition on the internal drive mounted natively in Windows if it's not mounted in OS X (This would be a godsend for me as a developer because I could share data between the two via something like MacDrive saving me a ton of space)
2: Snapshots....but I'm happy to wait for that!

Merry Christmas Parallels - sterling effort.

In Windows. Open the 'Start Menu' (clicky Start)
You should have a function named "Run"
Open it, it will have an input line and the buttons 'OK' and 'Browse'.
Copy and paste sc delete "parallels coherence service" in the input line and hit 'OK'
That should do the trick.

I believe that your drive mount wish would be technically impossible, since mounting that drive in the Windows VM would require OS X to unmount that drive (impossible since you are running the OS off that drive. However, 3036 and 3094 do allow file drag and drop between OS X and the VM. If anyone disagrees with this, please correct me.

I am seeing this same behavior as well on a MBP running 10.4.8. Worked as expected in the last release. Request to fix this please. :)

One issue I keep having is this build keeps crashing on my constantly. The whole Parallels crashes. First time I got a KP after starting a VM with Coherence on before I installed the new tools. Fixed that. Next time was accessing the shared folders and Parallels just crashed with the normal OS X Close/Report/Reopen dialog. Then I did a Parallels Compress and again at the very end sometime (it takes a long time) in the night it crashed as I got back to my MacBookPro and it was crashed again.

I never had any crashes with previous builds. I've completely uninstalled Parallels Tools. Restarted. Reinstalled the first time.

Vista will boot properly in safe mode, I'm not sure what's causing it to freeze up in normal mode. (Is there a verbose mode?)

I had this problem in beta 1 with Vista RC2 - it started working after a while.

I'm having the same exact problem. If I boot into safe mode, everything works just fine. However, if I boot into safe mode with networking support it hangs after this ...

"Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys"

Any ideas?

could you please explain exactly how this part of the fix you posted works ? :

"2. Start Menu --> Run --> sc delete "parallels coherence service"

Sorry, but since I am a Mac User as most of you probably are I am not so familiar with Windows stuff. Help would be appreciatet . Thanks

sc is a command line utility that manages windows service entries. The command in this case works by deleting the service entry that is left over by the previous version parallels tools uninstaller. When the newer version of parallels tools installs, it does not properly install the coherence service if there is already an entry for it in the list of windows services. Coherence must be installed (as a windows service) in order for it to work. By deleting the service you allow the newer version installer to install the new coherence service as intended.

More basically, services are programs that can run (usually in the background without interaction) regardless of which user is logged in. You can see which services are running, when they are configured to start and which credentials they are running under using the services mmc snapin (run mmc, add/remove snapin, choose services). Or you can right click on My Computer, select manage and expand the Services tree.

manfredell, kperry7505 - what are exactly your Palms names and versions? I'm buying this one immediately...

Any chance that in the future we could have separate threads for different issues, rather than putting everything under this huge meta thread?

I started a thread for Palm issues here:

My config:

Build 3094 locks up my Mac Pro. If I open any virtual machine or try to create a new one the computer immediately locks up. Build 1970 works just fine with VT-x and all the stuff on unlike earlier versions. It just seems as if for me at least that this build is a step backwards even with the new features. I wouldn't know how the new features are since I cannot use them.

Is there some weird something I need to do to get this build to work? Because of problems with previous builds I've started the practice of uninstalling Parallels, restarting, installing the new Parallels, restarting, and then trying it. That doesn't work with this version. I'm just unable to get it to do anything. No crash report is shown anywhere after the computer locks up, nothing. In this case I wish it was a kernel panic so I'd have something to show.

I use a Mac Pro 2x3Ghz, 4GB of RAM, ATI Radeon X1900XT.

After two days of it crashing over and over again and now again - I'm restoring my backup from right before install (glad I did that!) and going back to the rock solid 3036.

I had the same problem. I quit the beta then copied over a backup of my VM. This time when I started I removed parallels tools and let the VM reboot. Then I did a fresh install of the tools and it's working just fine so far.

Jazzer,

Yes, you will be asked that for every activation because OSX has already "claimed" your BC drive (which it does at the Admin level). Parallels needs to tell OSX to release that drive so that it can use it, but since the drive was mounted as Admin, only an Admin can unmount the drive. If you can find a way to not have the OS mount the drive at start up then you should not need to put your password at the start of the VM.

It looks like the sc delete "coherence.... partially worked for me.

Full screen is available only on the MBP monitor, not the external 20"

Coherence works only partially on the external monitor... the windows menubar sits about 3/4 down on the screen... not pegged to the bottom. Basically it looks like it's taking it's realestates measurement from the main screen, top of the Dock as the bottom of the screen. This of course keeps a lot of screen realestate from being used.

I appreciate the reply and the help. The WinXP apps no longer show in the OS X Doc. Thanks.

The hardware is not Apple Mac - I can't afford one just yet - still saving. As for the "pirated" issue, it's a matter of opinion. The unopened full retail boxed version of OS X 10.4.8 that I purchased from a store did not look pirated. Did I apply some "modifications" to get it to run on my existing hardware? Well, yes, that happened. However, ALL the software running on this system has been purchased for real U.S. $$$ except for the FreeWare and the copy of Ubuntu.

Still, your point is well taken and I don't ask for help on any issue I think might be on the fringe or related to my "special" circumstances.

Well I changed my monitor arrangement back to having the 2nd monitor's bottom at the same spot as the primary monitor (see attachment) and the coherence mode works wonderfully. I also found some slightly hidden preference items (right click Parallels icon in Dock, choose preferences) and turning a lot of the transition effects off seems to eliminate a lot of the odd screen motions.

Thanks to Parallels for doing such wonderful things. You have a bit more work to do, but only because you keep raising the bar so darn high.

Actually, it was...
You can only buy 10.4.6
You CANNOT buy any Intel version of Mac OS X
The license says it is for running on APPLE hardware...
So any way you want to slice it, you are running an illegitimate copy (something that came with a hardware purchase, not something you bought in a store) on unsupported hardware.

Works fine in all versions until 1970. Stopped working with latest 2 betas.

Also, the Palm device doesn't 'stick' in the Parallels Devices menu.

Now, when I start up Windows I get an alert without any text in it over the login screen (after trying to login). If I click OK I get logged out of Windows. I tried removing Parallel Tools - did not make a difference...
I tried safe mode - made a difference - I could log in
I tried safe mode with networking, I got the same alert and was logged out right after logging in (same as before).
Tried changing networking from Shared to bridged - same alert, clicking it logs out and brings you to the login screen.
Anyone have any insight into how to repair this? Going to keep on messing with the networking.

Turning off networking did NOT work. This may be due to a Microsoft patch. I will try to uninstall more and give a report

I too haven't been able to boot into Bootcamp with either beta. I keep hearing that one must uninstall the original Parallels Tools for Bootcamp, but I can't find any such file or program on my Bootcamp partition. There is no "uninstall" feature for the installer application. I wonder if it ever installed it in the first place (under beta 3036), even though I ran it several times.

Anyway, I'm running on a MacBook core 2 duo, 2Ghz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD & the standard Bootcamp partition of about 11-GB, WinXP Pro SP 2 corp. edition with no activation required. I've also installed the standard Paralles VM using the same Windows install, which works great. I'd really like to get rid of the VM on my Mac partition to free up space.

When I try to launch the BC VM I get the "Unable to open disk image Boot Camp" dialogue box (Same with beta 3036).

Any ideas?

I had this issue and could solve it as following:

- Start the VM and avoid Windows booting by pressing F8 quickly
- Start as save mode
- When logged in, install parallels tools
- Reboot VM normal

Best regards,

Stephan

This is in reponse to my original "black screen" problem..

This worked for me,but man you have to be fast with the F8 key. In my case, a MBPro..you have to actually be fast with TWO keys, the regular F8 key and the modifier "fn" key at the same time.

So I was reporting my "invisible" alert before. I logged in through safe mode and found out that the alert was an activation error. The thing is:
I have a corporate license.
I get no activation errors on Bootcamp
I had no issues until now.
The error in the log (and probably what causes it to log out without ever logging in) is:
Event ID 1000
An Error occurred while the wizard was checking the current windows product license

The thing is, it being a corporate license, there is no activation capability and it should NOT be checking this - is there a way to turn off the activation check that I think your parallels script may be doing?
Thank you!

Similar issues others are facing.

Coherence is a mess on a dual monitor setup, unless I first start parallels from the monitor that has my dock. (MacBook pro, display to the left. Menu bar is on the MacBook screen, dock is on the display, coherence only works on the display.) Still, having Windows apps in the dock is really spiffy.
Still can't use Boot Camp. Same stop 7B bsod as before. Made sure to uninstall parallels tools first.

Lucky you!

I have a large main screen to the left of a small aux screen (macbook display). They line up at the bottom. The menu bar is of course on the main screen, and the dock is on the right edge of the macbook display.

If I start it with the Paralells window on the large external screen, it just slides off the left and then the macbook display goes black until I go back to OS View.

If I start it with Parallels on the small screen, it does start, but I can't get the windows to move on to the main screen. If I position a window in such a way that it should be straddling both screens, it just gets cut off at the border - I see the half on the laptop screen and nothing on the main screen.

1. Parallels Tools will not install in Win 98.

2. When attempting to install 3094 (and 3036, and some earlier versions) in my main Mac OS X boot partition, some bad things happened, namely all my Mac folder settings were lost, and most folder permissions in my Applications folder were changed to root owner. This only happens on that one partition. I managed to install Parallels 3094 on an identical backup partition, then copy that partition to my main boot partition, not an ideal solution. I don't know what could be different about my main boot partition. Maybe Parallels could check the installation code for something that might cause these problems.

Otherwise, an amazing app.

There have been **huge** problems with the download.parallels.com server. Half an hour ago it was still rather difficult to download a complete and valid disk image. Hint: I downloaded "Speed Download 4" (google for it) and used that to download the image. I finally got it. The automated retry / resume using multiple connections of this tool greatly helped.

I am trying parallels for the first time today... and I am blown away! I am successfully running it off my bootcamp fat32 partition, and it is working great.

However, I am having one problem. The new features seemed to indicate the activation issue was solved, but I seem to still be having issues.

When I boot into Parallels for the first time, Windows activation screen came up and asked me to activate. When I tried to do this, it said I had reached the maximum number of activations allowed. (This would only be my second, however). So now I'm on a 3 day clock. The good news is that when I go back to bootcamp, it works fine. The bad news is I don't know how to activate Windows to work in parallels.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again for this fantastic product.

Well, the 3094 fixed the problem with the Stiletto always being busy and unable to connect to the Windows VM, it also seems to have fixed the BSOD from the production 1970 release. However now my Sirius Studio software never recognizes the Stiletto as being attached, but Parallels shows it to be available to the XP VM. Maybe the next update will fix it completely. :)

Had this working uner 3036. Successfully ininstalled both the Parellels Tools for Boot Camp and Parallels Tools from the Add/Remove Programs control panel in Windows (while booted in through Boot Camp, of course). Rebooted into WIndows through Boot Camp to make sure everything was uninstalled and cleaned up).

Got message in subject line. Have tried removing this "image" reference from my library, and readding it as a virtual machine, with the same result.

Hardware: MBP (gen 1) with 1.5G RAM.

Though it was working great (after a difficult install of the Boot Camp Tools in the previous build) I just couldn't refuse the seiren song of USB 2 and the Windows programs (Read: VMWare Client and Visio) in the dock with even less Windows stuff cluttering my desktop. Any thoughts on this?

I also am still getting the message
"Unable to open disk image Boot Camp!"

I am on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo.
Boot Camp is a FAT partition on the local drive.

I notice now that from the previous beta the Tools which needed to be installed in Windows never installed. On searching around as to why that install failed I found a file called "parallels-bctools-install.log" in it is the following error:

Set Logging to 2
bctool_install() finished with rc 5
Parallels Tools for Boot Camp Setup program cannot find file %s\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab. This file is required for successful installation of Tools and can be found on Windows XP installation CD.
Setup cannot be continued.

don't know if that has anything to do with anything, but there you go.
oh and also, cryptically, an empty file was left on my C: drive with the title:

At any rate I cannot get this beta to run for some reason. I've deleted and re-installed Parallels twice but no go.

Coherence is so cool! Thanks to all the posts here I was able to get the copy of XP that came with Virtual PC on my old PowerBook migrated to this beta. Virtual PC was so slow it was useless on my Powerbook and when I tried to boot it up my copy of XP there was corrupt so I had to reinstall it. Now I've got 30-days to reactivate windows XP under parallels. I don't know if I'll have to call Microsoft or not. Will the next beta-s/rc-s/final of parallels require re-activation yet again or should I go ahead and activate now?

I just hate calling microsoft and explaining what/why I'm doing something. And I'm marginally concerned their going to give me grief for trying to move my legal copy of XP from my old computer running virtual pc to the new one running parallels.

Thanks!
Eric

after reading through all the "bugs" i have come to the conclusion that parallels betas should be harder to obtain.
some of the problems people are having are caused entirely by their own incompetence.
these people have no business testing development software, they spam the forum with their idiot questions and make it impossible for the dev team and the people who can actually test the product to communicate.

example, people who think that because they cant mount the diskimage they downloaded that its incompatible with a certain version of windows. no.

people who ignore the warnings marked VERY IMPORTANT and fail to remove the earlier parallels tools from their bootcamp partition. READ THE RELEASE NOTES BEFORE SPAMMING THE FORUM

people who dont even know what a service is under windows, and cant even follow a simple instruction.. GO AWAY.

i blame digg.
its a magnet for morons.

Exact same error occured in Beta 1 (error loading operating system). In this I uninstalled the tools before running Parallels.

2.0 GHz Mac Pro, ATI X1900XT, 2 GB Ram, 4 HDDs (boot mac off a Raid 0 Raptor pair), 312 Gb NTFS partion in bay 4. XP Pro with all updates (minus IE 7). Also have Spydoctor and McAfee Security Centre installed; not that the XP boot gets that far.

Also getting "Error loading operating system" when booting from my Boot Camp drive in Parallels. Note when I attempted this with Beta1, it would just crash my system.

- 2.66 ghz Mac Pro
- ATI Radeon X1900 XT
- 4 GB RAM
- 3 HDDs (Boot Camp drive in 4th bay)
- XP pro (32-bit)
- Yes I have uninstalled Parallels Tools for Boot Camp

The Beta Works For Me Now

0.0

edit: or at least... it booted up. will keep you posted.
edit: booted up but the USB mouse and laptop keyboard weren't recognized. so, no easy fix. but i now know that this driver.cab or sp2.cab file is part of what is keeping Parallels from working on my machine.

I was actually able to use this method to get my boot camp installation working. :) After I had copied driver.cab and renamed the copy to sp2.cab parallels allowed me to boot windows instead of displaying the unable to open image error. Neither the keyboard or mouse worked at first, but after about a minute the keyboard started working. Since the mouse wasn't working I decided to try installing parallels tools to see if it would fix it. Well after selecting 'Install Parallels Tools...' from the 'Actions' menu the dialog that would usually display when first booting windows during an express install appeared. The parallels tools were automatically installed and ever since windows rebooted after that everything now works! :D

"Can't figure it out"?

What did you try?

Did you try, say, looking in the app preferences panel?

Or did it not immediately work as you expected it would so you posted to the forum for someone to tell you the answer?

Unless you give some indication of what you tried, we don't really know.

Are you using Coherence Mode? Do you have the setting turned on in Preferences?

I am getting the dreaded "Unable to open disk image Boot Camp!" message when trying to start a FAT32 Boot Camp partition too...

I am on Windows XP Pro Corporate. What version of Windows XP are others using who are getting the same message?

MBP C2D 2.33 2gb RAM

P.S. I got it to work by copying the drivers.cab file and renaming it sp2.cab trick as seen in another thread. I had to install Parallels tools from the menu before my trackpad/mouse would work... Seems to be working (have booted several times natively and from Parallels) with no activation issues...

I installed Beta2 over Beta1. Started my VM. Got the message to update my tools to the latest version. I ran the installer for the new tools. The installer starts and seems to be installing the new tools, but then just sits-- never completes. I force stop the VM and restart, the new tools seem to be there. Everything is fine, the new beta seems faster than beta1, but coherence does not work. The threads about this don't seem to apply to me. When I try to do the 'sc delete "parallels coherence service" I get an error saying that the service is not installed. When I try to install the service by running c:\Program Files\Parallels\Parallels Tools\cohrence.exe" (note spelling error), I get one of two errors - either 1063 can't connect to the service controller" or 1060 "the specified service is not installed". How do I install the coherence service? Thanks!

Since installing the upgrade, I've noticed that it blocks DVDs from being mounted and visible to the Mac finder.

I have XP running in Parallels.

If I insert a DVD, I get Windows Explorer asking me what to do with it. But it never shows up to Mac apps. Once I suspend the virtual machine, the DVD immediately mounts in the Mac world.

This is definitely different behaviour from what I've seen before. Is it some sort of new feature that I can adjust, or is it a bug?

Hey vinneh... your attitude and that of others who have a similar approach to assisting newbies is worse than worthless. These beta's are being released by the developer in order to try to design a product that will work "MacLike" with many hardware/software installations, just like most PC programs have to do. It's a necessary evil when you try to work with Windows. In addition, Boot Camp itself is just a beta.

What you need is a private forum for you and other 'elite' users where you can laugh or bitch about the problems that some are having without actually having to get your hands dirty.

There are many PC users that need to run software without having to know what a service is. This software is not a free beta, but rather a fairly expensive utility program that claims to be able to do quite a few tricks. It sorta works, but there are quite a few kinks and I don't think you know how to fix them all.

In the time it took to beat up on a guy with a question, you might have actually pointed him/her (and many others) in the right direction, of course that would have meant that you would have to look up a reference...

Don't you ever think about the person before you hit the post key?

Very well written!

I would have thought the whole idea of a PUBLIC beta is to get users of mixed abilities trying the software and then watching as issues get identified and homefully resolved. Some issues will be be genuine bugs, other issues will be installation and perhaps configuration problems, and some will simply require more explanatory documentation. A wide public beta program that includes the highly experienced and the not so experienced will simply flush out more problems.

Well done to the Parallels team. Well done to the users who take the trouble to assist their colleagues in the beta program. To the grumpy few that bitch at others inexperience - lighten up it is the holiday season!

YES, thanks! this worked for me as well! Things were a bit rough going at first. But once I got the Parallels Tools to install it was just like you said. Now the beta is running, with coherence and all, just great. It's all a little quirky for my taste. But I imagine for actual release they can work out all the oddities.
I hope this experience helps them figure out what caused this mess to begin with.

Just wanted to say well done on an absolutely marvellous product, being able to use my Bootcamp partition is absolutely essential and together with co-herence you have one mind-blowing product.

Thanks for the update - this is amazing progress for sure.

I had the issue of Win XP Activation using a Bootcamp partition in the first release. I have installed 3094 and my (activated) VM bootcamp is working very well except for Coherence which I can't activate in the (updated) Tools preferences.

I removed Parallels Bootcamp Tools directly in Bootcamp (not VM) before installing 3094 and now when I try and start in normal Bootcamp mode I get:

"A problem has prevented Windows from accurately checking the status of the licence for this computer. Do you want to activate now?"

Its activated in VM mode, but it still wants to activate in Bootcamp mode. I tried activating again but I'm having an issue (Parallels unrelated) with internet connectivity in Bootcamp mode - its not seeing my network connection so I can't activate again to test.

Anyone else seen this? After activating in Bootcamp again, is this the last time I will need to activate? I know this beta is meant to fix that, just looking for confirmation.

Thanks

I noticed when I installed 3094, Windows saw a different video controller. Now when I started my ubuntu 6.10 VM, I no longer get anything over 1024x768, even though the are enabled in the VM profile. I am assuming the fundamental video architecture changed, and it is no longer a "modified" vesa video controller. Will Parallels be releasing a linux 2.6 video driver ?

Thanks and regards,

Jeff

I am having exactly the same problem, i hae tried all the thing that work previously but i can not get 1280x800 on my macbook.

I suppose I will have to install the last build for now, its a shame because the windows enhancements are excellent.

I have the same problem. On a Treo 650. Hotsync name "sherman". Latest Palm software installed in XP Pro. There is clearly communication taking place (I hear a beep when I initiated a hotsync but nothing happens).

Also, the Palm device doesn't 'stick' in the Parallels Devices menu.

If I can help in anyway PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me.

Same problem. Using USB cable. Get message that new hardware has been detected and recognizes that it is a Palm device. Installer searches for software and states required software not detected. When I open Hotsynch manager to set it for USB connection, only Local, Modem, and network appear. No USB option. I downloaded most recent USB driver for Windows XP and the installer claims it isn't the correct software.

Otherwise, this is truely like having two computers in one. Amazing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does this beta still have the problem where you switch to parallels start typing and all random kinds of apps and windows open. Like I'd type and I get about 4 onenote clippings, a save dialog and then windows switches to the log in screen.

Its cause the Apple key gets stuck so you are typing with the windows key down, hence why win+L logs me out. So every time I swicht to parallels I need to press apple once to unstick it.

Thanks Mike,
I tried the Coherence fix - first part is fine, but for the second part the command window will not accept:

"C:\Program Files\Parallels\Parallels Tools\coherence" install

as a command. It does not like the directory names. I tried going to the Parallels Tools directory and running the install from there, but frankly from there I'm not sure what I need to type.
If the console is in "C:\Program Files\Parallels\Parallels Tools\" what can I type to install coherence?

Hang on there are all sorts of spellings of Coherence going on here. The sc delete command refs a Cohrence spelling and the Install commend refs a Coherence spelling. The exe file in the folder is spelt Cohrence.

I tried the install again with the Cohrence spelling and I get:

"Unable to install Cohrence service. Code 1078.
The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name"

Any ideas?

OK! I figured it out.
the following procedure works
do start-->run
in the run window type sc delete coherence
reboot windows
open a command window (type cmd after issuing a start-->run command)
cd c:\Program Files\Parallels\Parallels Tools
rename cohrence.exe to coherence.exe
then execute the command: coherence install

doing these steps got coherence working for me.

I've been following the posts on this thread and the previous 3036 build, and notice that there are a number of posts where it appears that the Boot Camp partition no longer works once the Parallels is installed. While I would love to try this thing out, I would not want this to affect an otherwise perfect Boot Camp setup.

Why would the Parallels installation/software affect the native Boot Camp partition in such a way that it no longer will even boot into the native Boot Camp partition? Any comments from the Parallels guys on this? From their point of view, should/could this even happen? Or is this likely related to user error of some type, or some other system modification that is conflicting with Parallels?

FYI, my system is a 2 GHZ MB Core Duo with 1 GB of RAM and a 120 GB HD, split 70/50 Mac OS X/Windows. Windows partition is NTFS. Standard retail installation of Windows XP Pro SP2.

Hi,

Trying build 3094 on a MacBook Pro and with XP in the Parallels environment. MBP has 2Gb.

Seen a couple of posts on this topic. My cursor also drifts to bottom right of screen in build 3036 and also now in build 3094. Makes the environment unusable.

Have checked the Acceleration settings in XP as suggested in another post but these were as the poster recommended anyway. Problem occurrs whether I use Coherence or not. Although, I do think it is somehow related to screen resolution, as if I try to set the resolution, the problem occurrs immediately.

Problem only seems to go away if I de-install and re-install Parallel Tools. But then it returns within a minute or so of using the environment.

Any thoughts from anyone -- or should I just go back to build 1970 and wait for a better beta?

Thank you All.

No longer true. Here's how I solved my bsod problem.

EDIT: Damn. While messing with coherence on 3094 (the multiple monitors setting I had just noticed), Parallels crashed. Now I get "Unable to open disk image Boot Camp", even after rebooting Mac OS. Is this one a FAQ?

EDIT2: hal.dll was corrupted when parallels crashed. OS won't boot natively either. Ah well, glad I backed it up first!

Dec 23, 2006, 12:44 PM
I'm sure these two concerns have already been mentioned..
-Resolution switching problem. If an application (ie a game) tries to switch resolutions, the mouse goes nutz, and any movement will just make it slowly move to the bottom right. I switched my resolution to 640x480 via control panel and then ran the game and it didn't do this.
-Memory Allocation: This is nonsensical and annoying.
http://stadsport.revhost.net/Misc/Parallels_Memory.png
Edit: Ah, found out this has to do with manually setting the reserved memory limit. Does Parallels really use 100mb of overhead?

That aside, this is terrific progress, keep up the great work!

Does Parallels really use 100mb of overhead? It definitely doesn't. The normal overhead of our virtualization engine is much less than that.
But we're constantly working to make our software as easy for the end user as possible. Automatic memory configuration sets your limit to match the best host/guest performance ratio, - usually it's just what the end user will need.

Just upgraded from beta 1 to beta 2. Coherence works, but has some problems. I have a 15" macbook pro with a 23" cinema display on the left side of my laptop (if it matters).

If I have parallels on the left (23") monitor and enable coherence, it looks like coherence is looking at the screen height resolution of my laptop, not the external monitor, so it puts the taskbar about 4 inches from the bottom of the screen. The width seems to be ok. Also, it corrupts the left half of the display on the laptop. I can drag a window around to redraw the screen to fix the corruption. I *think* this might have something to do with the sliding animation, but not sure.

I tried uninstalling cohrence (coherence?) and reinstalling it, but it didn't help. If I enable/disable coherence with the parallels window on my laptop screen, it works fine.

Also, a feature enhancement request: It would be cool if I could drag a Windows window from one screen to the other in coherence mode, but I understand if there is a programming limitation to this with regard to resolutions and such.

Thanks!

With the latest Parallels/BC beta I had some hope for my PPC (HP HX2790 WM5.0) and USB synch. However it still does not work quite right yet.

1. Works ok under Boot Camp alone (this would be expected)
2. Works ok under VMWare Fusion beta (this was unexpected)
3. Does not work under Parallels 3094 (bummer)

The symptoms are that Active Sync will connect to the PPC under Parallels but it will not communicate without error. I live in hope that someday....

I upgraded from 3036 and no issues, but the iSight camera is still dead in 3094. It works fine in the current shipping release and has broken in 3036 and now 3094.

I tried re-installing the Mac - Win Drivers CD and no luck.

It does try and install it and says "Ready to use" when you select it from the USB icon, but it then says "it may not function properly"..

You hear it connect then disconnect immediately.

Beware of this beta with multiple displays. I have 2 systems with dual head an i works on neither one in fullscreen or coherence mode.

I would like to confirm an issue that affects me, and appears to affect other people as well: booting from bootcamp (fat32) does not work at all if you have WinXP SP2 Corp with a volume license key. It seems that Parallels attempts to install its files, then unmounts the partition and fails to load, giving the "unable to open image bootcamp" error. Booting later from bootcamp gives a "cannot connect to parallels" notice, but works fine otherwise.

Any word about this issue? Others experiencing this?
