Hi!
I am using the brand new beta of Parallels for Mac OS X. So far I am quite amazed by ease of use and speed of this solution. However, I cant get networking to work.
I am connecting to my local WLAN by AirPort. I have selected en1 (the AirPort Card) as the Interface in Bridged networking, but the Guest OS (XP) doesn't get an IP adress from my Router. Any suggestions?

Hello,
Actually, this beta will not have a possibility to bridge to wireless adapters. That's the limitation of the beta only, the forthcoming versions (and RTM of course) will have wireless networking support out of the box.
If it is possible in your local network, please choose en0 and use wired adapter - this one will work for you.
Best regards,
Tim

Erm, so why does my virtual XP Media Center Edition I just installed on my MacBook Pro have Internet Connection via Airport? :)

sirdir - which version, 2004 or 2005? Just curious. I downloaded the beta of Parallels and will download from msdn XP Media Center Ed. in the version you got the airport to work under since I really need to have my airport work in the VM.
Thanks in advance!

Hi!
It's the 2005 edition (didn't try anything else, but in fact it shouldn't make any difference, should it?)

Wouldn't think so, just didn't want to go through any undue hassle since I have access to both versions.
Thanks for replying so fast!

I've got XP Pro installed under Parallels beta and have my Virtual NIC bridged to my Airport with no problems. I've got WEP turned on and DHCP set in OS X and XP Pro.

No problems here. I picked up my new MacBook Pro today (1.83Ghz, 512MB model) and installed Parellels VM software with Windows XP. I'm downloading updates to the XP VM via my Airport card as I type this. Working in Bridged mode. It's working great....even though I need to bump up the ram in this laptop. :o

Excuse me, willwgm3, just how do one bridge the Virtual NIC to the Airport? Can you clarify this a bit for non-techies like me? I don't even know where the Virtual NIC is. Please help!
I have found that only getting an IP via DHCP does not work on the guest. After I configured the IP manually it worked fine.

Internet connection through my AirPort on my MacBook from XP Pro under parallels works fine. Only problem is I'm unable to access the MacBook itself (e.g OS X SMB shares) from within parallels.

With the VM stopped (shut down XP), bring up the properties page, click on Network Adapter, then change en0 to en1 in the selection list.

From the Property Views screen for the guest click on 'Edit'. Then select Network Adapter and modify the bridged ethernet device from en0 (nic) to en1 (airport).

This is the same, and only problem I can see, that I am having with binding the guest OS to the Airport card (EN1).
If we could add other virtual NICs to the guest machine, we might have a work around, but that's not an option right now.

Cn anyone of the people who got bridged networking with airport running tell me how you configured Windows? I tried to configure a manual IP address - still no luck.

My VM is bound to EN1 on my MacBook Pro, and I'm using DHCP on the host and the VM. No problems, other than the aforementioned issue with using SMB from the guest to the host.

Hmmm...that's what I have done but when I went into XP, the LAN does not show any connection (I set to DHCO first) till I manually key in an IP address 10.0.1.9). It then shows a LAN connection but no internet connection even though my airport was OK and connected.
I have firstly set both systems to DHCP but no dice. Do you think it may be simpler just to recreate a VM and reinstall XP? Apart from this, I have an error message telling me that the DVD/CD-ROM device could not be connected even though this was already enabled in the config.

Running MBP 2.0 I had no luck with using DHCP in XP on Airport. Changing the NIC to en1 in settings and assigning a static IP manually did the trick right away.
XP reports 10 Mb connection... has anyone checked to see if it's actually limiting throughput or if this is just a small inaccuracy?

I've noticed that the WinXP settings are automatically configured to half-duplex, which is probably why your XP is reporting 10 MBS.
Right click on your network adapter in Windows, select Properties. On the "General" tab, click the "Configure..." button. Click the "Advanced" tab, then change the "Line Speed" value to "TP Full Duplex" and see if that makes a difference.
On my iMac 20", I'm not able to get Airport to bridge, regardless of whether I use DHCP in Windows, a static IP that differs from my iMac's, or the same IP address, even with a static entry in my Airport Extreme router. :(
But wow, what a cool product. Can't wait for the final version.

I've got a mini duo running XP just fine via Airport. Switched the network over from en0 to en1 and it was fine. I do occassionally get IE6 not finding anything on initial boot, but after closing it and restarting it seems to be fine.

Is this working for anyone on an 20" iMac?
I installed parallel. Then installed XP SP2 in it. Then installed parallel tools. I have EN1 enabled for bridged networking, but no dice. :( Is there something special i need to do? I would kill for networking!
Edit: Going through the posts here it looks like lots of peopel on MBPs getting this working, not so much on iMacs. Just a thought.

Seems like this problem only occurs on imacs.:(
I have a 20 inch intel imac connected via airport, and can't figure out how to make the network... work
A friend of mine has a macbookpro connecter the same way, and it did work out-of-the-box.
Anyway it's still a beta, and a GREAT ONE !!!
I'm ready to pre-order my copy of parallels workstation if it can help you for the final release guys !

It doesnt work on my 20" iMac too (connected to internet via aiport/linksys-ap, guest debian-linux). I've run a setup with en0 and ip-forwarding to en1 by OSX - but this crashes OS X networking sometimes under heavy load.
Now I installed squid from the fink tools as webproxy and use en1.

Bridging is working (limited) with my Airport connection also....
The (limited) part is that I can not access my Host machine from the VM as well as the other way around.... I read in one of the threads that this is a known bug in the beta.....
BTW... Parallels team... WONDERFUL JOB with this product... I may actually (and finally) be able to dump my work windoze pc for good....
QEMU (and the knock offs) have problems with running proprietary VPN through the networks (of course, I know, its open source)
Boot Camp is nice, but I have a Mac because I LOVE the mac OS and applications..... I can't use OmniOutliner or OmniGraffle during my work day if I am booted into windoze via Boot Camp....
BUT I can with Parallels.....
I know, there has always been VPC and such.... but it was always too slow for me.... I think Parallels is actually running XP faster than my windows laptop.... Of course, the 2.16 Ghz cpu, 2 Gig of 667 memory and a 7200 rpm drive help a lot with that....
Microsoft, you missed the boat.... by the time you have a VPC for Intel Mac, most of us will (happily) be using Parallels - and probably for a portion of the MS price....
Good Job Parallels !

The Airport problems appear to be fixed in Beta2. I've tested and am able to communicate between guest and host while the guest is bound to my airport interface now.

Install Beta2.
With the VM shut down, change the network adapter to en1 and select the WiFi checkbox.
In OS X, enable both Ethernet *and* Airport.
Fire up the XP VM.
Go find some spyware!

I have both Airport and Ethernet enabled. Only the airport shows up on my Network main screen however (no cat5 cable is plugged in). I had to manually setup an ip in Windows XP running in Parallels. Any option of a mini NAT/DHCP server built into parallels? That is what VMWare used to have.

As others have reported, Beta2 has resolved my issue of being able to access SMB shares on my MacBook pro from my WinXP Pro guest.
Excellent work!

On our Macbook Pro we run SQL server enterprise manager to conect to remote SQL servers. Using en0 and wired network we have no problems - works great. Using the airport on en1 we can browse the internet but SQL server won'l access remote servers anymore..
Any ideas?

Only problem with this solution is that my company VPN will NOT work on the VM machine via wireless connection. If I check the Wifi box and en1, I can see files on the host but not use my VPN. If I uncheck the Wifi box, I can use my VPN but no files on the host. Annoying, but not devastating.

eprom- the "wifi" box came out in Beta 2. Go get the latest build, and I think you'll find what you're looking for.
Beta 2 fixed the problem of putting the VM on en1, but not getting a network connection for me.
Just address the wake=reboot problem, and we've got a killer app for me. SQL Enterprise manager and Access on my MBP: 2 apps I need at the office.

I have an iMac 20" with 2 GB RAM. I'm running XP SVC PK 2 VM.
The Airport connection did not work for me either at first. In fact, XP wouldn't boot. It would go through the opening mostly black screen with the XP logo and then go completely black forever. Rebooting the VM and Parallels didn't work. FInally I switched the thernet option to Wired and XP booted fine. Then I changed it back to wirless and it magically worked.
At first Explorer didn't recognize the connection, but when I told it to "try again" all is good.
Impressive.
If they can just get this all into a slightly more simplified, brainless install, it will be the bomb. As it is, it's way cool.

I have a new Mac Pro and I keep getting errors with bridging my internet connection saying that the IP address is already in use by another computer on the network. The one assigned to the Windows XP vm I'm trying to use is identical to the Mac's IP address. How can I solve this?

Greetings All,
Just bought Parallels (Build 1970) and am running it on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo (2.33GHz/3GB RAM).
When I'm at home on my Airport wireless network, the Internet connection 'bridges' just fine into XP, I've downloaded all Windows Updates and surfed the Net on IE7.
(In Parallels Desktop, the "Network Adapter" setting is set to "Bridged Ethernet" and "Default")
I'm now at my office, where there's also a wireless network, and my Mac is configured to use it with the a) Network Name, b) Network Password, and c) my MAC Address is 'registered' with the network admin so that the laptop is recognized.
However, when I switch to XP (via Parallels), the office wireless network isn't recognized, and I can't get online. I have tried to switch the "Network Adapter" setting to "en1: Airport/Wireless Adapter", and there was still no change when I started up XP in the office.
Questions:
- Is there a different (virtual) MAC Address for the XP machine that I need to 'register' with my network admin?
- Is there a different setting in "Network Adapter" that I need to use for the office versus home?
- Do I need to create a new "Network Connection" in XP for the office with details specific to it?
Congrats to the Parallels gurus for making an amazing app, and any help advice would be welcome! Please keep it to English suitable for an advanced Mac-Head, but a fledgling XP user, though <smile>....
Best,
Alexander.

I am guessing as I do not use my MBPro for work, but having a Win Notebook, I had to do #3 above!
So I think for your Mac it would be the same.

The virtual machine has its own MAC address. To find it, shut down the virtual machine, edit th configuration, select the network adaptor and click on the Advanced Tab.

Hello ATKNAPP,
You actually have the exact same problem as I do, except I now have build 3188 and i haven't checked (more like I don't know how to check) that my VM MAC Address is registered w/ our company's network adapter.
Have you resolved your problem? My MIS dep't is stumped on this one, they don't use Macs.
What's most strange to me is that I've connected to the internet through my VM internet on my company's network before and it now won't function. I believe the VM is detecting our level B IP address, but it is not seeing me.
Your success will lead to mine too.:)
thank you,
Matt
