View Full Version : Bare Bones Thoughts and Questions

Hi, we are running the server beta on both Ubuntu Server 7 and a bare bones install. I'm wondering if there are other advantages to the bare bones install other than ease of installation. For instance, have any modifications been made to the OS or kernel to provide better performance or memory management or any such thing?

I'm asking because the bare bones machine is a bit of an odd duck to maintain.

1. Maybe I did something wrong, but the partitioning seems off. / is almost full right off the bat and what little spare is left is quickly filled up by the parallels.log file which is written into /.
2. As soon as / fills up, you can't do things like useradd.
3. I can't seem to install utilities like slocate with yum. (can't recall the failure atm)

[root@localhost ~]$ df -kh
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
4.8G 4.8G 0 100% /
215G 72G 133G 35% /var/parallels
992M 46M 896M 5% /tmp
/dev/sda3 99M 29M 65M 31% /boot
tmpfs 2.0G 0 2.0G 0% /dev/shm

Thanks much for any info you can provide! :)
