Hi all,
I thought this might help anyone suffering with Bridged Networking "sickness". Maybe this isn't new info. but I could not find this fix anywhere in the manual, forums, or the rest of the world.
I have a Mac Pro, OS X 10.4.8, 2 x 2.66 Dual-core, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB (os/software) RAID, 2 NIC's, running the OS X firewall & Parallels 3186. My VM is Windows XP sp 2, and I desperately wanted to use bridged networking on my 2nd NIC (OS X on en0 and XP on en1). And I could never get it to work! Grrrr! Finally... I changed the Parallels provided MAC number to the hardware MAC number of en1 (use an OS X term window and type in "ifconfig" and look for a line like this:
en1: flags=8963<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,PROMISC,SIMPLEX,MULTICA ST> mtu 1500
ether 00:17:f2:00:00:00 <-- FYI, a unique number, different on your computer
Edit your VM network settings to match the hardware MAC and shazam! It worked! I couldn't believe it. No MTU changes, no disabling the firewall, no changing the NIC order in OS X. Just a quick change of the MAC number (Important safety note: make sure you don't accidentally use the MAC for en0).
I also noticed that the Parallels NIC driver in XP is set for Half-Duplex! ??????? Sheesh. That's a must change for Full-Duplex joy. Too bad there isn't Gig support yet...
Have fun,
