NWN2 Would be awesome. It's the reason I made a boot camp partition in the first place. It may be too slow though, I haven't been able to check of course.
I tried fallout but it may be a problem with the game. Maybe I just need a '98 partition (shudders)
Perhaps a list of games that are known to work would be cool too. I'm pretty sure I can get heroes of might and magic IV going but I haven't been ab le to roll back bootcamp 1.3 to 1.2 successfully so my machine will only run in safe mode atm. ( can't get the workaround to work either)

As for games...
NFS:MW- Direct X 9 heavy. Will take some work.

I agree-- Mouse needs to be fixed.
MOHAA I can't LEAVE the window if I want to, but other games it will just leave the window.
Its probably something with coherence and the mousing changes in it to make it not stick in a single machine.

Well yeah, it's heaps annoying, I may have to try having it set to OS Window maybe. or (god forbid) uninstall parallels tools? :P
actually, realised if I ran the parallels session in full screen instead of coherence or OS window, it doesn't have that problem!!! I'm stoked!!!

Not meaning to be rude in any way, but I see lots of people wanting to play Diablo and Warcraft in parallels, why? You can run it natively in mac and it will be a lot better, and even if you have an old cd without the mac diablo installer, you can download it from blizzard for free.
Hope that's not rude, would just like to know why... is it a multiplayer or mod issue??
ps: hope Diablo 3 is announced soon, but that's way off topic :D

Seriously. Both these games have native os x versions that work great. Don't waste a dev's time. Hell, they're even on one cd for that matter. You don't even have to do anything special.
But I would have to second that UnrealEd request! :)

I think that's the point of this thread. Since Parallels have indicated that they plan to support Vista Aero in a future release, the implication is that they *will* include significantly improved DirectX capability at that point.

Those having problems with Warcraft 3 - please specifically post if you've tried to run it in OpenGl mode or not.
To run W3 in GL mode, right click your Warcraft 3 shortcut, select Properties and append "-opnegl" to Target field, so it looks like
"C:\Program Files\Warcraft III\w3l.exe" -opengl

Do you want logs? IIRC theres some sort of logging feature on parallels. If it works the way I assume, one would not only know what crashes but exactly how.

As far as I can tell, Fallout Tactics doesn't work at all.
It claims to only require DX7, and ships with a copy of DX8, so I was pretty surprised and disappointed when it didn't launch.
I don't expect super-modern PC games to always work, but so far I haven't gotten anything to work. I'm a little cranky that I dropped $50 for this upgrade.

Same here. Is there any tunable parameters in GW.exe?
I've changed the graphics options in game to the lowest and still only get like 5-6 frames per second... not playable.
Also got HL2/Counter Strike source to work. same story, very slow performance.
To the developers, is it at all possible to assemble the WINE code mapping to DirectX?

Sounds a bit as though you may not have enabled DirectX in the VM video config.
ncl
Jun 10, 2007, 08:24 PM
No, I'm quite sure I enabled DirectX.
Edit: Though, really, the fact that that's the common response kinda suggests that the Parallels folks botched the upgrade a bit — shipping with one of the big marketing features of the new release turned off by default for upgrade customers was perhaps a poor decision.

I love this game and I use Bootcamp ONLY to play it nothing else as I prefer Parallels to leave OSX running for my real work.
I am using the bootcamp partition through Parallels 3.0 and it won't boot now(dreaded hardware not compatible error but that is another story) ANY WAY I am using that installation of FFXI to test PD3 DX support and POL will start with sound and control with keyboard and gamepad but I get no picture it is just black, yes DX is checked, w/o it I see the picture and have control but it will of course fail as I log into the game.
Unfortunately i have a OEM copy from another PC(that got Linux loaded on it) and it has updates including DX9. Would that being installed be a problem or does Parallels bypass it? I unfortunately can't seem to downgrade to 8.1 like i would prefer. All the instructions online fail miserably.
any way to cut the story short(or rather not any longer) FFXI please work someday I love you but you are making me use Bootcamp.

Eve-Online is about playable.
But it has problems with mouse positions until the games goes into fullscreen. There are also some color issues and some white progresbars because they are coded with shaders.
Hope Parallels can fix that.

Red Alert 2 would be great. It runs, but takes about 4 minutes to get to the main menu screen - once it gets there, the menus run fine. once in the game, it's LAGGY. about the equivalent of a PC running at 3-500Mhz at a guess... The mouse keeps dropping out of the VM when trying to scroll at the edge of the screen. If parallels is going to support games, it's going to have to sort out some system for configuring the way that the mouse interacts with the edge of the VM screen - the current behaviour makes gaming unusable in windowed mode (the graphics were screwy in full screen).

I'd like to throw the City Of (Heroes/Villains) games into the ring. They're one of the very few games I still keep windows around for. Also, I bought the Steam version of UFO: Afterlight since I've been an XCOM addict for over a decade. Alas, it doesn't seem to work well within P3.0. I can get to the main menu, and set options and what not, but once the actual 3D engine initializes, kerplunk, kerplooey.
And, on another note, I decided to run a an openGL benchmark, Cinebench (http://www.maxon.net/pages/download/cinebench_e.html), to see just what a difference in performance I would see in P3.0 vs OSX. Unless I'm missing a setting somewhere, there doesn't seem to be ANY 3D acceleration of OpenGL inside parallels. Example numbers for my MBP 2.16 w/2G RAM (Windows XP SP2 gets 1G of that) are:
P3.0 (Build 4128) in Coherence Mode:
OpenGL in Software mode = 652
OpenGL in Hardware mode = 430
P3.0 (Build 4128) in Full Screen Mode:
OpenGL in Software mode = 659
OpenGL in Hardware mode = 408
P3.0 (Build 4128) in OS Window Mode:
OpenGL in Software mode = 671
OpenGL in Hardware mode = 441
OSX 10.4.9:
OpenGL in Software mode = 1533
OpenGL in Hardware mode = 3064
As you can see, not a subtle difference in any mode. Definitely something off. If anyone has suggestions on OpenGL optimization, I'd love to hear it. Also, something else to note is that there were no textures visible during any of the test runs in Parallels, but there were in the OSX native run. Alas, I do not have a Boot Camp partition on this system anymore due to some Leopard testing I did, so I can't offer numbers for that config.
If I may be so bold, perhaps the Parallels Lads could add this lil benchmark tool to their QA suite. I've found it very handy in testing a system's OpenGL performance...

Interesting. I ran the same tests in XP SP2 Parallels on my PacPro. I *did* see textures in software lighting test in Parallels, but not in the hardware lighting test.
My Parallels numbers (OS Window mode only):
OpenGL-SW-L: 834
OpenGL-HW-L: 446
My OS X numbers:
OpenGL-SW-L: 2007
OpenGL-HW-L: 4211
The really strange thing is that the Parallels hardware numbers are LOWER than the software ones, both in your tests and in mine. I've no idea what that's all about!

The 32bit mouse cursor works, at least thats something!! The rest looks like it was multi layered scene and someone came along and switch several of the critical layers off, like the characters.
You would think that with several million Guild Wars players, with no Mac version of the game, that this one would be a bit of a priority to support.

It's an older game and when actually within the gameplay it works well (at least at 640x480 - higher resolutions don't work as well), but the game is, for some reason, extremely choppy when in the menus, course selection, etc, such that the mouse is extremely difficult to use. You move the mouse and a second or two later you see where it ended up. That bad. Which is really weird since once you get the the game going it works very smoothly. So all it needs is a fix for the menus and it would be more than adequate on my 1st gen MacBook 2 GHz.

Which is pretty impressive considering it's a DX9 game. It throws a brief "no support for nv_vertex_program" alert during launch, but then proceeds to load the game.
I was able to log in, select a server, start creating a hero, before I got tired of dealing with the one eensy bug under Parallels: the mouse cursor won't display, so you have to navigate around by only feel and mouseover hilites.
NWN2 puts enough strain on my MBP under BootCamp, I wouldn't want to try it under Parallels with only a quarter as much VRAM being virtualized. But the NWN2 Toolset... now that would be something worth Parallelizing.

Jeez-- All I get is a white screen and it's the ONLY reason I'd want to use a "windoze" virtualization in the first place.
DirectX support in 3.0? Hardly... Frankly I can't even get windows media player to play a VIDEO at all in Vista...
I haven't even tried playing a DVD ... The Video Driver that comes with Parallels is just junk... there is no such thing as 3D.. It's hilarious they even tried to sell it that way.:)

I've tried the old classic Starfleet Command II, specifically I grabbed the demo and ran it.
It does run, but only just. The screen is jerky, the mouse movement is very jerky, and there is now sound.
Since it is an older game, maybe only moderate work is needed to make it viable?

I have installed and Run the new harry Potter Game, and it runs fine (weell, that is to say, just as badly as it runs on the PC, which is pretty bad) but the text within the game is unreadable. It appears as a white blob of the outline of the text, so it is tantalizingly close to being decipherable.
I don't know if this is a weird issue with my display (a flat panel), a font install issue with the 'guest' Windows, or simply an incompatibility in the DirectX support Parallels has.
Does anyone have any suggestions or can at least tell me what the issue is so I can stop trying to fix it if its Parallels?

Gameplay for The Settlers II 10th Anniversary isn't working, although the game does run to the menus, so I assume that gameplay itself requires DX9. (I'm told that the original Settlers II works fine, but I have not been able to verify it myself)
C&C:The First Decade works for some games and not for others, obviously (I want to see if I can have Mac Generals and PC Generals in one shared folder structure - ie. one common set of data files). I'm getting graphical problems with the early games, but that has nothing to do with Parallels itself.
I'm interested in whether it is possible to have one set of files for a few cross-platform games (eg. Civ4, Warcraft III, etc.) in a shared folder structure - good for games where cross-platform multiplayer gaming is not implemented...

This game is from http://www.codemasters.com
1. I installed Archlord on a brand new copy of Windows XP Pro SP2 (no windows update)
2. Enabled DirectX Support from the VM Options.
3. Left the Video Memory to 16MB and the main Memory to 512
4. Started Windows XP up and launched Archlord
5. Game booted up as normal
6. Got to the loading screen after loading Parallel crashes so does the MacOS
7. I force rebooted my machine, and tried again, this time, I made sure all the graphics are OFF.
8. Game ran, got to the loading screen everything crashed again...but.. then it got to the next screen which was the loggin screen for archlord.
9. However, the login screen was SLOW the frame rate was very very slow even with all the graphics lowed to NOTHING.
10. I was able to log into the game, with the same problem it ran for about 10mins with horrible frame rate and lowered graphics...then it crashes Parallel followed by the MacOS. Then I shut down my mac, and cried myself to sleep....
Help me?!

Unreal Gold (which is DX7) looks great and runs smoothly at 1650x1050, but surprisingly runs TOO fast at times! You'll be walking (or running) along and all of a sudden start moving twice as fast as you should be for periods of time. Sound remains OK though. Anyone else seen this?

C&C3 would be great. right now, it will launch, get the the main menu, even let me start a mission, however when i get there all i see is my hud, and the main map is completely blank. I also have no sound.
Additionally, Command and Conquer - the First decade, does not work. Not even the original C&C (1) will work on this. It tries to start, then errors out and I have to open the task manager to kill the c&c 95 process. interesting, since this game worked under win95 :P

My 7-year old son humbly requests support for the golf game Infamous 18. :)
I already had DirectX 9.0c installed, but some files are marked outdated, even after installing Parallels Tools. Then I read elsewhere on this forum that DirectX 9.0c is not supported, only 8.1 (the latter of which is already on XP). Hopefully having 9.0c installed in tandem is not an issue. (Shouldn't normally be - different drivers/DLLs, I'd expect.)
Anyway, as it is, Infamous 18 does not appear to work at all. (The game requirements mention it's DirectX 9.0c _compatible_ but at the same time it doesn't mention that it's not 8.1 compatible.)

Question
I get a black screen then the game crashes back to desktop.
Answer
This issue is generally caused by a videocard incompatibility from either the hardware or the software (drivers) installed.
Firstly, ensure your videocard is compatible with the game. Refer to the minimum specification of the game and to the link below for instructions on checking your system matches or exceeds the minimum requirements.
If your card meets the requirements to run the game ensure your videocard drivers are the latest available from your videocard manufacturer.

I've been having problems with all of my downloaded games from Big Fish and Real Arcade. I'd already purchased many that are not available yet for Mac OS and was excited for the possibility of not losing my money. I'm running Vista Business in Parallels and none of the games (of which I've tried many) are working (either major sound/graphic issues or the mouse issue already acknowledged). I know on my old PC some games ran better if you selected "run as administrator" or "run in XP mode"; however, this screen is greyed out under Properties. Anyone else having issues manually selecting the run as admin option on individual programs?

I was wondering, is there a simple setting that can be changes so that you can run Heroes III in parallels?
When you start the game, the game-screen is only half size of the actual desktop. Whrn you press 'full screen' it tries to expand, but instead the game-screen keeps it size, and optains big black borders instead..
Any help or suggestions?

I would like to see RealFlight G3 (www.realflight.com) simulator work on Parallels. It works fine on my Mac Mini under BootCamp, but will not work under a Parallels VM. I have tried both v3 (build 4560) and the newest beta version (build 5120) and both show a large number of errors and eventually quit. RealFlight requires directx 9, which supposedly the newest verison of Parallels (at least the beta version, anyway) supports.

I think its a little unreal if you ask me.. This support for 3D / DirectX should have been the first thing put into this software. Before its over with you will have as much money in running windows on Mac as you would have if you just bought a windows machine to begin with.
A decent windowsXP with decent memory/disk space from Compaq you can get for around $600 from BestBuy..
Right now I as well as many others have
$200 in windowsXP software
$80 in Parallels
$40 in Parallels update
Total $320.00 (not counting shipping)
If I would have known I had to sink all this money into just running windows I would have bought a windows.
Its unreal.. Very disappointed!!!
Added: If this only supports directX 8.1 will we have to pay for another update to support DirectX 9+ ??

One reason I got Parallels was in the belief that these simpler games would be no problem to run. Much to my dismay, such is not the case. GW works well not fine (slowly)
To disable MOST artifacts and make it playpal turn off that checkbox bottom left of graphics tab..... called somethind like: apply extended post-processing
Just reduce the graphics :: especially shading to reduce more artifacts
still though - even at 800x600 it is too slow to really play :/
Boot camp it is :(
Anyways::: Great Direct3D works now :)

TheaHardy,
Lets put it this way, there are alot of limitations it seems.
A windows95 game that requires only directX 6, Any sound card, only 16MB of Ram has problems playing on Parallels. The video is crappy, the sound comes and goes, and the game is extremely slow.
I think you will have a very hard time finding anything that would run proper aside from very small apps that dont require too many functions.
Parallels is not worth the investment of money or time spent getting it to work..

Games works great...only problem is that that when you move the mouse to the top of the screen (it's supposed to scroll the map up), it doesn't do anything. That's when you play it using full screen OS mode. Maybe because the menu bar is up top? Then...when playing it under coherence using full screen you can scroll using the top fine, but you cant scroll down by mousing the bottom of the screen. Is this because the dock is down there?

City of Heroes is (almost) the sole reason for my Boot Camp partition, because I haven't been able to get that game to run with reasonable performance under Parallels. It runs, but it gives an error at launch: "Your card or driver doesn't support GL_NV_vertex_program". This error (which doesn't occur when I reboot and play through Boot Camp) seems to limit the graphics severely, and the game plays only in at a tiny size (640x480 or something in that range, not sure, but it's puny!), and can't support any of the fancy graphical settings.
I'm running Parallels Desktop 3.0, Build 5160, on a MacBook Pro (nVidia GeForce 8600M video card), and yes, I have checked "Enable DirectX support" in the Video pane of the Virtual Machine preferences. The Windows version is XP SP2 (same version is used for both Parallels and Boot Camp). I visited nVidia's site from inside Parallels and used their beta "auto-detect the necessary video card drivers" feature, and it came back with "Parallels driver 0.0" and said my drivers were up to date; downloading their 8600 drivers manually came back with a message that no supported hardware was found, so it wouldn't install.
I'd love to be able to dispense with rebooting to play CoH, and I've seen others wishing for this as well -- if there's some fix for this, we'd all be appreciative!

To reply to myself: it was defaulting to 800x600, but I've just found that if you choose the resolution in-game to be Windowed, you can get a full-screen size out of it. The 3D acceleration is still missing, though, so you're playing a pale shadow of what the game is capable of generating.

You probably get this a lot, seeing as this is one of the number one PC games of all time, but I'd really love to see The Sims 2 working in parallels. I had every single expansion pack available (for windows though) and then we got the mac. There was no way I was going to buy the base game PLUS all those expansion packs all over again, so I couldn't play it for months. Understandably, I was very excited at the release of parallels. I bought parallels only so that I could play The Sims 2, and what happens when I get it? It can't even run DirectX.
I tried everything--enabling DirectX in the videos options, downloading it (I probably tried about ten times) checking to make sure it's actually ON the computer (it is, it's DirectX 9.0c). I also have the latest version of parallels.
So yes, it'd be great to actually be able to play my favorite game on parallels.

America's Army V2.8.2
I can currently run all of the offline training and it looks great. When I go on an actual online deployment (Bridge Crossing for example) some of the texture looks like a chess board but the bridge and the combat actually work for a while, but then it starts to degrade and the screen begins to blink black. According to the documentation, AA requires directx v9.0 support, which I know that Parallels does not currently support, but it would be great to add this game to list. Or at least give it another vote!
Thanks for all of the hard work Parallel's development team!

Thanks for the previous posts in regards windows95, I got it working without a problem, same with XP and W2000. The problem comes in when it tries to launch into the various options after having loaded into cache what it needs to load. It hangs and only pressing ESC does it escape and the programme crashes. From what I can make out it uses DirectX 8.
Would it be possible to work out a solution for this problem?

When 9 is supported it will be worth upgrading from my unnumbered version* of Parallels Desktop for Mac. Or is there another solution I could try?
Keep up the good work.

Might be a bit odd...but I would love to see these work via parallels.
1.IMVU
IMVU used to work but no longer does! It worked very well for me with build 5160 on OS X 10.4.11. It has not worked since upgrading to Mac OS 10.5.1 and Parallels builds 5560, 5580 and now 5582. I hope this will get fixed soon. Someone please let me know if there's something I can test.

How about the original Starfleet Command? It will only run in multiplayer, not in skirmish or campaign, due to something about the CD copy protection.
[Never mind; I found a NoCD crack for it, and now it works great under Parallels and XP.]

Dear Qom,
We are sorry for disappointing your expectations. However we do have a reason (mentioned above) not to concentrate on World of Warcraft primarily.
With every build of Parallels Desktop a lot of things get changed. So it is possible that a game working before is not supported any more - if the game has not been included in our priority list.
Why don't you run World of Warcraft on your Mac OS?

Hi,
I also vote for Medieval Total War. It launches well, but the "battle"-mode gives serious rendering problems (violet screen, sometimes you can see a box flickering).
(Oh, I forgot, I use the lastest Parallels Version - 5582, DX Enabled)

Another vote for NWN2. Tried to install several times; each time I was told that a required file was missing - different file each time. Also, NWN1 worked for a short time and then started crashing - don't remember the circumstances, and I lost the install discs while moving so have been unable to replicate. Would prefer to run in OS X but was unable to find a Mac copy.

The versions of Diablo 2 that I've seen for sale in the last few months have installs for both Mac and Windows. You may want to check yours. Maybe you could install the Mac version. I have some old games bought before I got a Mac which turned out to have a Mac version included as well (Scrabble, Starcraft Broodwars).

CoD:UO multiplayer works fairly well under the latest build of Parallels 3, but with one gotcha. Here are my observations. In both cases Parallels is running Windows XP full screen at 1600x1200 on a Mac Pro.
Full screen mode at 1600x1200
- Average frame rate: 80 fps.
- Very smooth; no chop or lag.
- Video is very, very dark making it almost impossible to play the game.
- Game engine brightness control has no effect.
Windowed Mode at 1280x1024
- Average frame rate: 65 fps.
- Mild chop.
- Video has full brightness and intensity.
From what I have seen, I would find the performance of the multiplayer version of Call of Duty: United Offensive under parallels perfectly acceptable if I could actually see what was on the screen. Solve the dark video problem, and you can add CoD:UO to the list of games that work flawlessly.

Sims 2 on Windows requires DirectX 9.0c. Parallels only has DX8 support so far. So you'd have to ask jd300 how he got it working.

Actually, it probably works right now but FunCom is working on a serious engine overhaul for release in the "near" future...

attached pvs, as well as crash report & system config.

Other Games that don't work :
- Age of Mythology ( transparent objects)
- Command & Conquer : Generals (crashes vm on startup)
- Earth 2160 (transparent objects)
- Empire Earth (menu impossible to navigate, transparent objects)
- Homeworld / Homeworld Cataclysm (openGL mode doesn't work, directx mode is horribly slow)
- Impossible Creatures ( transparent objects)
- Trackmania United (won't start)
- Warhammer : Dawn of War ( transparent objects, wrong colours, )
- Settlers 2 10th Anniversary (menu runs nicely, game crashes)
- Worms 2 (flickering like on a 10Hz screen)
- Worms Armageddon (flickering like on a 10Hz screen)
- Warzone 2100 (only runs with software renderer)
- Warzone 2100 2.1beta2 (open source, www.wz2100.net, crash) (version 2.0 runs nicely)

I understand the game can be run on a Mac just fine, but some of the mods that I use are PC exclusive.
Also, I spent a lot of fracking money on this program (not to mention the $200 bucks I shelled out for buying Windows XP Home), and I expect it to live up to some basic promises. Why is this game unable to run on this program?

kim, same goes for me. i've got diablo II version 1.0 which is only for PC and everytime i try download the native installer, the file unzips into the another zipped file and unzips to another and so on. after forking out money for parallels, for xp and for the stupid game, it's getting quite bothersome that it won't load at all. help anyone?
Try loading v.1.10 or v1.11. If you are trying to play the game on Parallels, then you are probably using PC mods. Most PC mods work on 1.10 or 1.11. If you are using 1.0, most mods will not work at all. I should mention that 1.12 came out recently, but plugy does not work with 1.12. Just stick to 1.10 or 1.11 and you will be fine.
*sigh* if someone could make a mac version of plugy, then that would be great.

Massive Assault 2 (MAN2) is working in v4 with one critical problem. for some reason, the "dots" located under the cities that define unit placement/movement locations are not visible and cannot be used for unit placement or movement. this is a big problem since the possession of the dot in the center of the city is critical to territorial control.
also, the game runs slowly, too slowly to be an effective medium.

Hi.
I could use some help...
i've seen people in here say they've gotten EU3 working with Parallels. I had tried on Parallels 3.0, and just given up because of its poor 3D support, but most of the games I had that were broken with 3.0 are now working in 4.0. EU3, however, is still not working for me.
I have an early 08 Macbook Pro, 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, GeForce 8600M GT 512MB VRAM, 1920x1200 LCD, and a Hitachi 185GB 7200rpm HDD, running 10.5.5 with all updates current. The install it is running off of is my BootCamp partition, running Windows XP SP3 with all current updates and (Apple-supplied) drivers, on the same HDD as my OS X install.
I always get exactly the same symptoms, no matter what I do - everything starts and runs fine through the intro movies and initialization, but when it gets to the start menu, the menu graphic is centered at the upper right hand corner of the screen (so I only see the lower left quarter of it), all the button graphics are mashed together, and the actual button hotspots are invisible at, presumably, their normal places on the screen.
This has happened with both Parallels 4.0 builds 3522 and 3540. It happens both with parallels in fullscreen mode and windowed. It happens in both those cases with EU3 running full screen or in a window, with multiple different resolutions chosen. It happens both with and without the 'Adjust the Host computer's resolution in full screen' box checked. It happens with parallels set to both 128mb and 256mb video ram. It happens with and without antialiasing on, and with and without each of all four video options checked in EU3. It happens at both 1024 and 1536mb of memory dedicated to the virtual machine. It happens with base EU3, with the Napoleon's Ambition addon, and with the In Nomine addon.
The game and both addons all run flawlessly when booted into Windows XP through Bootcamp.
I am out of ideas. Has anyone else seen this happen? Has anyone solved it, or does anyone have any suggestions of what else I might try?
Thank you.

In Parallels 3, I was able to run all the episodes of Sam and Max via Steam. The rendering was sometimes weird (blown out specular highlights on some characters), but the games worked.
In Parallels 4 (3540), Sam and Max won't even start. Steam says it's starting the game, but then nothing ever happens. In the Task Manager I can see both a "PRL_CC.EXE" and a "sammax101.exe" start and die, but that's it.
The game starts fine under Boot Camp.

Hello,
if a game was running properly in Parallels Desktop 3 and got messed up by installing Parallels Desktop 4, this may be caused by the fact that hardware, video cards for instance, is emulated in a different way in the newer version. A reinstall of the games in question might fix the issue. I understand, that this may be a painful experience to do for games running off Steam, but that would be the safest bet.

I don't see reinstalling a game as doing the job, though in many cases it won't hurt (look out for those saved games tho!)
Firing up City of Heroes in P4, an error will pop up with:
You card or driver doesn't support GL_NV_vertex_program
The game to the login screen, though the mouse pointer behaves poorly (it creates a black bar on the screen wherever it goes). The game eventually crashes upon initial zone, with the following error message:
City of Heroes has encountered an error and cannot continue.
This error occurred while talking to the video card driver; getting the latest version of your video card drivers may eliminate this problem
Go to www.ati.com, www.nvidia.com or www.intel.com to get the latest video card drivers.
In some cases, such as laptops, you may need to get the latest drivers from your computer manufacturer's site.
Error message: pbuffer creation error: Couldn't query pixel formats.

My upgrade from Parallels 3 to Parallels 4 involved me reinstalling XP from scratch into my Boot Camp partition due to the "autochk" problem. Obviously, this required me to reinstall Steam as well.
Since then, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Steam and my Steam-powered games a second time, just to check.
I suspect that doing it a third time won't help much. :)
Dxdiag reports I do have DirectX support, but I can't tell if the game believes that. The DX7 test sometimes flickers a bit, but the DX8 and DX9 tests look fine.
I don't suppose there's any way to turn switch to a "legacy mode" so we can choose whether we're getting the Parallels 3 or Parallels 4 video card emulation?

It hadn't occurred to me, since I'm trying to run a 3d game. But hey, I'll give it a shot.

Nope. Unsurprisingly, Sam & Max 101 now complains that there is no 3d acceleration. Likewise, Dxdiag won't let me run any 3d tests.
The "legacy mode" I was hoping for didn't involve dropping 3d acceleration. I was asking if there was a way to switch between the 3d acceleration used by Parallels 3 and the 3d acceleration used by Parallels 4, since some things which worked in Parallels 3 no longer work in Parallels 4.

I've been having the oddest problem with source engine games. This is build 3810, WinXP SP3, on a new Macbook Pro 15" (unibody). Virtual machine is set for 2 processors, 1200MB ram, and 128 vram. Games like Half-Life 2 and Counter Strike: Source run impressively well (does parallels make use of the new add-on MPB 3d graphics processor?), except for the occasional 1-second hang-up, but there's one oddity, and one bad graphical glitch I'm seeing:
The oddity is that non-environment textures sometimes seem to be at a different brightness (or gamma) than environmental ones. I.e., player/npc models, boxes, debris, etc look washed out & bright compared to the world.
The glitch is that player & npc models occasionally disappear, except for shadows. This includes gun and hand models for my character, and enemies and their weapons. Moving around seems to randomly show and hide models.

Ever since I upgraded to Parallels 3810, I've had the following problems with Civ 4. The boot screen main menu flickers between opaque and transparent (Picture 3), the loading screen does the same (Picture 4), and the city information in the game is not displayed (Picture 5).
This has only happened since I upgraded to the most recent build. I'm on a macbook pro (nov 2006), running XP sp3 in the virtual machine.

Tirial, thanks for your report. I'll file a bug on Civ 4.

wow.. what a long thread..... I spose i better stick my 2 cents worth in.
Descent 3 - minor graphics glitches on main menu
Call Of Duty 4 & 5 .... Of course who wouldn't wanna play COD under VM...
But all these threads make out like its soo easy to do... people probably just want them to work...... I know its harder in VM cause of hardware virtulization, and not everything is possible in a due to probably limitation of emulation of video . If Parallels could showhow gain control at the hardware level, the same they do with cd-rw drives (which is why cd recording is possible), then that would probably be alott easier..... Time will tell... however,
People do know that cpu goes up (particularly on 3D) games, not to mention running in a vm right??

I am having the same issue too. Civilization 4 worked very well in previous build. Since upgrading to build 3810 I have same graphic issues in game as Tirial.

Please get the hitman series to work with parallels. the 3.0 version says hitman 2 will work but when i tried intalling it, a message came up saying it could not open the readme file. same applies for hitman contracts. on hitman blood money, i can completely finish the installation but when i try to run the game, a message comes up saying it cannot find dx file or something like that. i tried reinstalling with the direct x but nothing changed. i am using parallels 4.0

The game I want to work is The Adventure Company's Keepsake. It works right after I finish installing the game and patch 1.6, but not after I restart my Windows XP virtual machine. After I restart Windows XP there are a bunch of white boxes where some of the graphics used to be, such as where to click to start the game and the cursor is a moving white box. When I click to start the game there are more white boxes in the bottom left hand corner where you click to interact with the game's options. It should look like the lower screenshots found here: http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/keepsake/screenshots.html. Secrets of the Ark (also from the Adventure Company) works just fine and appears to be a newer game. Keepsake seems to skip the introductory credits when I restart the game after rebooting.
Another touchy game is Empire Interactive's Ghost Master. It likes to quit right after the opening credits, and when it does work there is a white bar across the screen where the cursor is located.
I have Parallels 4, and 3D acceleration has been enabled. Can you help me?

in the end i found a thread to add a switch to the command line -fragment_program 0 so put this on the end of the shortcut and it should run

The total war Series, including Rome Total War, are my favorite games and part of the reason I purchased parallels. Please make them work.
Thank you!

Cities XL is not working. When launching the game, an error message appears and indicates that the graphic card isn't powerful enough. We can still enter the game, but only see parts of the image and no text at all.
Is there anything I can do to make it work?
Thanks!

Final Fantasy 11, this game worked slowly at times in PD4. About five minutes into loading in PD5 I got a blue screen and it crashed windows and rebooted. I can try it again get the event viewer crash info.
