Parallels Build 3188

When I attempt to activate iSight in my Windows XP VM like so:

http://image.bayimg.com/na/pf/da/aa/h.jpg

...I get this error:

http://image.bayimg.com/na/pf/ja/aa/h.jpg

If I try to activate iSight again, the option is gone from the menu:

http://image.bayimg.com/oa/pf/ha/aa/h.jpg

The option comes back if I close and restart Parallels.

I am certain nothing is using iSight before I attempt to activate it in the VM. Rebooting the VM or the computer itself doesn't help, nor does a complete computer shut down.

I'm not sure why this started happening. It worked fine until today. In fact, I used the camera on the Windows XP VM last night.

I did update the Mac OS from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 today...

I updated Parallels to Build 3212. This did NOT fix the problem.

Any ideas?

Hello Neekstah

There’s a known compatibility problem with Parallels Desktop build 3188 and 3212 USB implementation and Mac OS X 10.4.10. We are issuing and update for 2.5 within next two days that fixes the compatibility problem.

Glad to hear this is being worked on. I also updated to 10.4.10 only to find out that my Motorola Q9 phone no longer can connect via USB (same symptoms Neekstah mentioned). Looking forward to the fix!

Microsoft tend to test patches and give developers of applications which the patch breaks an opportunity to produce an update before a patch is generally released. I'm surprised that apparently Apple didn't do the same with 10.4.10.

The fact that Parallels and VMWare have both been affected in the same way with this update suggests neither company is in the wrong.

I am having the same problem connecting a USB external hard drive. I originally had Parelles installed and it saw my device without a problem. However, I had built my VM with too little memory. When I tried to expand the memory, I had to do a complete re install of the product. Now my VM give me the message that my device is being used by another application. Is this correctable in 2.5 or are we going to have to go to 3.0??

Have you tried ejecting the device from OSX? (Right click on device and select "eject" or drag device to trash can) Then attach to VM.

I just checked for updates (via Help menu) and build 3214 is available. I've tried it and it fixes my problems! :) Thanks Parallels!

I've tried obtaining this through the "Check for Updates" option in Parallels, but it tells me my version (Build 3212) is the most current one. Additionally, if I go to the Downloads section, it appears to only offer up the most recent 3.0 release. Was Build 3214 pulled?

Thanks, got it! Shouldn't that be somewhere easier for customers to find, though?

Thanks for the thread.....my copy protection dongles for my design software stopped working when I updated to 10.4.10. This put my consulting business "out of business". The support folks told me the update was coming but I never would have found it without this thread!

The good news is that all is working well again...just in time for me! Thanks to whomever posted the direct link to the 3214 download :)

Without punctuation, I can't really tell exactly what you're saying, but this problem was fixed by Parallels a couple days after the Mac OS X 10.4.10 update broke it, so it has been fixed and is working fine for me (and others you can see in this thread).

Check for Updates from the Help menu and upgrade to build 3214 or higher for Parallels 2, or build 4128 or higher for Parallels 3.0.

toadstool, it may be fixed for some but for others we still have the same irritating problem.

I've had this persistent problem since originally installing Parallels. Contacted Parallels support and have tried a number of different updates and USB/Serial Interfaces.

Now running Build 5158 Release Candidate 2 of Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac on a 15" MacBook Pro with no resolution. Parallels Support acknowledges this is a bug that will be fixed. No info on when the fix will be ready.

Have you tried the workaround where you open the Parallels application and then select the appropriate configuration file?

w9lp
Sep 17, 2007, 07:29 PM
Not sure I know which workaround you're referring to... do you have a reference or URL? I have selected the device within the Parallels App and seen the same results... it certainly is consistent.

I reference old builds, but give it a try. http://forums.parallels.com/showthread.php?p=71216

Thanks for the reference Eru. I heard this workaround can work on pre-3.0 versions of Parallels... unfortunately, I heard AFTER I updated to 3.0. Unless I don't understand what it means to open the Parallels.app... the Application... I've been around this block many times. No luck. Thanks for taking the time to reply though.

My solution was switching back to 10.4.9.
VMWare-Fusion - 10.4.10 - USB - No Problem :-)

Hmm... I think you are getting it, it just means not to open the .pvs file directly. Have you tried upgrading to 5160? Also, what are your settings for when a USB device is connected? Ask user, auto-connect to VM, or no action?

If you've upgraded to the latest build and tried workarounds to no avail, try deleting your virtual machine and starting from scratch. After much frustration, those 5 minutes allowed me to use the USB ports in Parallels.

Anyone still having problems with this? I'm running 3.0 build 5160 and can not get a Garmin device to work properly at all.

This is unbelievably frustrating.

It seems most of the people having problems were running 2.5, but I'm on 3.0 and it still doesn't work.

Anyone come up with a viable work-around?

Thanks.

Jason, I'm still having the same problem ( Macbook & iMac, OS x 10.4.10, PD 5160). I'm not sure I want to go through the effort of re-installing the VM. The bit that annoys me (and has done for a while) is that it used to work.

Yes, I agree. Deleting and re-installing is not something I really want to do.

And, mine worked twice I believe. Once back when I first installed it, then once again a few weeks ago. Other than that it has been nothing but headaches.

Try re-installing Parallels... Delete. Restart. Install.

If you use their un-installer it won't delete your .hdd file.

In my case, I didn't need to delete/re-install Parallels. All I did was delete the Virtual Machine (and any reference to it) and make a new one. Really just took me 5 minutes to do, and I was so happy that I thought of doing that. It's worked just fine for me since then.
