Please give the following details for every USB device which does not work so that Parallels will perhaps attack these. I've been waiting patiently since Beta 1 for my device to work and no go.

Device: SCR3310 Smart Card Reader
MFR: SCM Microsystems
OS: Windows XP SP2
Symptom: XP reports problem installing Driver - install usually hangs
Affects: Cannot use to connect to my corporate VPN - the main use of this product for me
Changes : Problem has been consistent since first version supporting USB

Device: Ezonics iContact Pro
MFR: Ezonics
OS: Windows XP SP2
Description: XP installs driver fine. Connecting the device makes the happy "USB connected" sound that windows does. But the device does not work, and shows up with an exclamation point in the device manager under "Imaging Devices"
Progress : Problem has been consistent since first version supporting USB

I am still hoping to see a posting here from someone at Parallels addressing the question of if we should even EXPECT these devices to work. I am keeping my fingers crossed, but it would be nice to know if webcam functionality is in the cards at all for this version.

Device: USB Sensor (Pulse)
MFR: Quantum Intech, HeartMath LLC
OS: Windows XP SP2
Symptom: USB device you are trying to connect to the VM is being used by another process.. Wait 5-10 seconds, then try to connect the device again. Trying to manually connect with the icon at the bottom of the screen gives the same result. Disabling VTX does not change this.
System: MacBook Pro 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, System 10.4.6
Affects: Freeze-Framer application does not get access to device.

This sensor is an HID device. I would be glad to provide a package for testing, we have a lot of customers interested in a solution.

Hi all,

after upgrade to RC2 ( I uninstall everything before the new instalation), my ICD2 USB programmer from microchip continues not working.

I uses 2 drivers, one called firmware loader and another called client. the VM recognizes the USB Device and install the first driver (Loader). as soon as it finish the installation the famus message "device is in use by another application" apears and the VM did not install the second driver.

I tried to install the second one manually, but with this procedure the Windows XP crashes!!! (blue screen and reset).

please Parallels could you tell me if this kind of device will work some day?

again, this is tha main reason I bought this VM!!

thanks

KeySpan USB-Serial Adaper. None of the windows supported adapters work unless the driver on the Mac is uninstalled. It looks like Parallels does not like having to compete with host-installed drivers. I'm no USB expert, but this seems that they should have thought of this before even hinting at saying that they support USB devices.

Please let us consolidate the USB problem area so that everyone gets a fair view of what works and what doesn't in the current release. Getting very frustrated with no answers on USB problems. The product is a1 except for this.

My T-Mobile MDA has not worked with any version of Parallels. I read other posts about possible ways to make it work, but no luck. It finds the device and attempts to install it and then gives a message to the effect that there was a problem with the installation and the device will not work. Parallels lists the phone in devices, but Active Sync will not find it.

I can't get my iPod to be recognised. The USB symbol has a flashing greenlight and nothing happens.

Can anybody enlighten an idiot as to what he's done wrong please.

Would it have anything to do with the fact that the ipod is Windows formatted and Parallels is looking for a Mac formatted one? I had to format it as a Windows one so that it could be recognised on both my PC and Mac. Now I have a Macbook, I'm hoping that it won't be neccessary for this.

this might be naive from the point of view of the parallels developers, but it seems to me that much could be fixed, and at the very least many of these usb problems could be debugged more accurately if one major part of the equation was removed --- the conflict with osx trying to take control of the usb device and not allowing parallels to use the device as a result. If there could be a way to "turn off" usb access on the mac side for a particular usb device, and this could be controlled on a device-by-device basis within a popout control panel in the parallels main screen (config screen, not within the guest os), and if the list was saved automatically whenever a change was made (like if I told the list to give parallels control of my ipod then the next time I start parallels it takes control of my ipod if it's connected or when it's next connected), that would be really nice.

This would solve many of the conflicts we're all experiencing right now, and I personally have managed to work around some of those conflicts on a device by device basis by disabling the usb device on the osx side when needed but this isn't consistent or easy at all (it's a pain in the butt actually). But it would allow more devices to work, it would allow us to say exactly which devices run under parallels or osx (since it can't run under both at the same time obviously), and it would give us the ability to send more useful bug reports to parallels about which devices honeslty don't work.

As an example of how I'd do it, make a scrollable list of usb devices that are currently connected to your mac with a checkbox beside each saying "use in parallels". if it's unchecked it's useable in osx, if checked it'll be disabled in osx and useable in parallels' guest os. Due to the nature of usb devices being plug and play, this list will have to save itself with updates every time a new usb device is seen when parallels is running, and then when you next run parallels even if your ipod or whatever isn't connected it will still be in the list if it was used in the past with parallels and that way you if you have a device that you always (or almost always) use with parallels then it will remember that setting in the future when you plug it in again.

This preference setting would only take control of osx while parallels is running, when parallels isn't running the particular guest os in question then osx will try to use all attached usb devices as usual.

Of course this is just a suggestion of how parallels could do it, that's how I would do it if I was coding this, but it's a quick thought - no real research put into it, and I don't know if it's possible at all.

Wouldn't it be nice though? :-)

Cheers,
DKelley

well, I think that this is how the RC2 works now ;). If I right click over the USB icon in the lower bar of the window, I see a list of USB devices atached to the iMac and I can check and uncheck them. When I change the status, the guest OS inside the VM "see" the new attached device

We have un-installed the Mac KeySpan USB-Serial adaptor and it still does not work under Parallels. Can we add this device to the list of USB devices that should be supported. The error mode for it is that characters are lost when the remote device sends lots of data. We are testing this under Windows XP and under Suse 9.3 Linux.

We need this working to justify migrating our developer machine base to Parallels, since we need serial access to the embedded devices we develop for.

Edit: This error was under RC1. We have not tried RC2 but since Parallels has not indicated if it was an issue, I don't intent to test it again until we get some indication that it has been addressed.

This USB-compact-flash device works fine under Mac OSX, but does not work under Suse 9.3 Linux or Windows XP when using RC1.

Under Linux, either linux hangs or it says that it is not a valid block device. Under Windows, the entire (iMac) machine crashed.

dkelley sumarized just what I would suggest. The procedure suggested by rbarbera seems to only work if the host OS has no hooks already into the device—it won't "detach" a device already attached to the host OS. We need a way to identify devices and completely remove them from the host's access.

(Note to The Parallels Team: "I'm love'n it!")

I wonder if this is the answer to some of the problems. I apologize up front if this has been discussed I couldn't find it on the forum.
If you look on page 101 of the current user guide it mentions. "The current version of Parallels Desktop emulates the 2-port USB controller 1.1. This means that up to two USB peripherals can be connected to a Virtual Machine simultaneously." Does this mean that if I have a mouse and the keyboard I've used my two ports? Also, what does, "Isochronous devices are not supported in the current version." mean?
Thanks,
Chris

RC2 now seems to work with all the devices I need to do my work, so the only device left that I have that I may want to plug in is my Freecom DVB-T USB Stick, that unfortunately doesn't seem to have Mac drivers.

I'm running Windows 2000 SP4 as Client, Intel Dual Core Mac-Mini as Host.

I'm guessing its too complicated a device to work, but it would be really useful, as I plug my Mac into the TV when I have to stay at Bed and Breakfasts when I work away from home, so that I have a DVD player, but it would be nice to use it as a digital TV as well.

An extra minor issue is that when I restart the client system, I get the USB device is in use message, even though the only thing that was using it was the Windows client itself. This issue is solved, by unplugging and replugging in the device again after reboot, so I am not too bothered by this.

We have other problems with iSight - we don't know how to say OS X not to use it - it is essential for using it in VM. I hope we can solve this eventually.

But we can't make XP drivers for iSight for sure - it can be real stopper.

PS: I don't fully aware it doesn't exist really. But if someone going to use it in XP - may be he somehow got the drivers...

Are you sure you have the correct driver loaded? Unlike the Mac version (which works for all their devices), they seem to have separate version for each device.

Does the device show up when using the KeySpan serial assistant? The problem I have when I have the Mac driver loaded is (I assume) that the Mac driver competes with the Windows driver in Parallels and Parallels looses. If I have the serial assistant running in Windows, the device shows up for a second, then disapears (and I get the "device in use by the host" blah blah error). If I remove the OS X driver, the serial device stays up in Windows. I have not tested it by connecting a real device yet because the cables I use in the offic e just left with our gear for a trade show. I'll test it with my Serial enabled Garmin GPS tonight.

I'll see if I can get away with the comand-line kextload & kextunload to enable/disable the Mac drivers so I don't have to deal with the Keyspan installer all the time.

In any case, I hope Parallels continues to improve USB support, or even better, supports real serial ports rather than just sockets and files. That would do away with the USB support requirements all together and probably would not be all that difficult to do (but how many of us need this is the problem I guess).

Cheers,

rcomeau

Greetings,

I just confirmed that I am using the correct XP driver (I have actually tried to use the HS driver to see if I could get it to work to no avail). I am using the same driver (for the USA-19QW) that I use in BootCamp (where it works flawlessly). I don't have the MacOSX driver installed. When running RC2, I plug in the Keyspan, and Windows announces new hardware has been found. I look at the KeySpan Assistant and it says that it cannot find a serial device. Windows alerts me after a short period that the driver cannot talk to the device.

Alas. I am looking forward to getting it to work in Parallels though!

Hi, all.

I've updated to RC2 (including the Parallels Tools Center), and I still can't print to my Officejet 7110. I downloaded the latest driver software from HP's website, printed out the instructions, and followed them to the letter. That included first uninstalling all previous Officejet driver software (and rebooting), unplugging the USB cable and turning off the Officejet, installing the software (and rebooting), plugging in the USB cable and turning on the Officejet to complete the Plug-and-Play portion of the install, and then completing that install. Everything seemed to go fine, but when all was said and done, the little status icon in the toolbar tray said that it couldn't communicate with the Officejet, and trying to print ended up with a job in the queue that also couldn't communicate with the Officejet.

Any ideas?

I tried the Qtek 9100 with three different ActiveSyncs (3.8, 4.0, 4.1) under WIn XP SP2.

I have USB autoconnect off.

It shows up in the list of USB device as "Generic RDIS", when I select it, Win XP recognizes it as a "Windows Mobile" device and installs a network adapter for it. However, then some error prevents that adapter to go active - it receives the yellow question mark icon in the hardware manager.

This is 100% repeatable (I have to remove the network adapter in the hardware manager to make the system try installation again, of course).

How about using the Printer Sharing from macos x?

greets philipp
schmidp,

I will try it, but thanks for pointing this out because you solved another problem I had with my home network. I have an old HP Laserjet 5MP (a real workhorse) that connects to an AsanteTalk bridge via LocalTalk, which in turn plugs into my MacBook. Of course, AppleTalk needs to be turned on to talk to this printer. I never even thought I could use it from WIndows in the Parallels environment, but thanks to you, I investigated the printer sharing feature of Mac OS X a little bit more, installed Bonjour for Windows, and was able to locate and easily print to it from Windows. I'll try connecting to my Officejet 7110 tomorrow. Again, thanks!

Device - Canon Pixma MP 780
MFR: Canon
OS: Windows XP SP2
Symptom: XP reports “An error has occurred when printing the following print job. Click Cancel to stop printing.“ Status monitor shows printer as being online although in the Devices - USB menu it does not show up as a USB Printer (as the Epson does) it shows as ‘Composite 04a9:1707” whatever that is?
Affects: Software of no use to me if I cannot print. Only require Parallels for use with one type of corporate software which requires printing of documents.
A borrowed Epson Stylus C80 prints without any issues but I don’t want to have to buy an old printer and don’t have room for two printers in my office. Just mentioned this to show printing can work with my setup. Bootcamp prints with the Canon without any issues but rebooting half a dozen times a day is a problem for me.
Changes: Printing on the Cannon has not worked in any version and no feedback from Parallels despite four emails. Very frustrating to have no response even a “We don’t know or You will have to wait” - Otherwise seems like great software and leaves Virtual PC for dead in terms of speed.

I used to USB switcher to make my phone connect in serial mode.
Worked great on RC1, but does not work anymore on RC2.

I even tried an old ipaq which does not connect using RNDIS, even that does not work.
XP recognizes those devices, but I get the the three beep sound.

I have already pre-ordered parallels, and I love it so far. If this gets working, then it will be perfect.

This is kind of gross, but I was in a tight spot and needed to use my macbook modem, so I connected from the mac and used internet sharing to share the modem connection over ethernet, and parallels was able to use that shared connection (it wouldn't use the modem connection directly, I don't think it was listed if memory serves). I realize this doesn't help if you need to dial directly into a server.

USB support seems to be pretty particular. Will get some USB devices working; like 1GB iPod Shuffle connects and uploads or downloads in WIN 2000 Pro & Win XP. But, HP Laserjet 3015 or HP Deskjet 4215 won't connect when local and connected directly to Mac via USB.

However, interestingly enuf, when connected in Windows Network to other HP printers (Laserjets 4050, 4250, 4550, color laserjets 4600 and 4650) the Mac and the guest OSes connect perfectly; although the Windows OSes take forever to setup through HP JetAdmin.

Also, when connecting to a 'shared printer' in a Mac network, "Bonjour for Windows" worked like a charm http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows103.html. The Windows guest OS connected to the Shared HP Deskjet in the same way the Mac OS connects to the 'shared printer' in that Mac Network.

Might have psted this in the wrong place, so here it is again....

So I have a HP PSC 1400 USB printer installed on OX host. Printer sharing turned on. Windows sharing turned on.

In XP I have installed Bonjour. It can't find the printer.
Thought maybe I need to install HP drivers on XP. HUGE file download, goes thru install, says make sure printer is plugged in & turned on, then fails to complete installation.
Inspection of the XP file system shows dozens upon dozens of HP files.

Any wisdom out there?

Here are some experiences with RC2 and a WinXP SP2 Guest and some USB devices:

HP Laserjet 1300: worked once, was recognized, drivers installed, printed a page - didn't since. Apparently MacOS doesn't properly release the device when connecting it to a VM guest.
HP iPaq hx4700 (USB Cradle): Works, however: Whenever the device is restarted or undocked/redocked, it is disconnected from the VM and needs to be manually reconnected - thats rather annoying - I suggest adding an option such as "always connect this device automatically". Also the HP Firmware upgrade doesn't work correctly with this - it starts, but looses connection a few percent into the upgrade.

It would be useful to hear from anyone on strategies for determining just *how* the Host OS already has control over a particular USB device. I'm in the same boat (actually with the same phone) as EdwardLotz, and while I've disabled ImageCapture from automatically launching iPhoto when my K750i is connected, and I've unmounted the phone from the Finder as a removable media, I still get the 5-10 second message. We don't all need USB support in the Windows VM so it isn't a show stopper, and I'm quite happy to have it now rather than later. It is entirely possible that because none of the support software for USB devices were built anticipating they'd be shared in a virtual environment, there may be unresolvable issues. In my case I have a printer and an iPod. Both work perfectly well in OS X and I have no need or interest in them working in Windows. Windows can see the shared printer and has no business attaching to the iPod. So I'm a happy customer. If USB support is a critical service then this is probably the wrong product for you to use to run Windows on Mac hardware. That does not make it a bad product - just the wrong product.

Certainly depends on one's need. In my case, I need Windows to supplement my Mac. My Mac does the heavy stuff. I just need Windows for just a couple of products and that is it. USB is a very minor issue for me.

USB won't work with my Garmin, but using a USB to serial adapter, I am able to use the Garmin.

Yet, Garmin doesn't YET make software for the Mac. Parallels Desktop opened up a new world for me. I now can do GIS stuff on my Mac instead of having to use a klunky Dell laptop that you can't see in sunlight. My Mac does a marvelous job with this combo. I'm happy.

Three ways:

In the finder, click the up-arrow looking icon next to it in the left pane of the finder window

Right click (or control-click if you only have one button) the device icon on the desktop and select eject.

Drag the device icon on the desktop to the trash (real intuitive, right?) This deletes files, but unmounts devices -- my idea of bad UI design, but Apple mostly gets it right in other places.

Something to remember is that Parallels emulates USB 1.1. If the application for your device cannot use USB at that level it probably won't work (Chorus: Duh!). The Parallels folks are working on 2.0 for a future release (FFR). Based on what I've been reading about USB problems in this forum I'm wondering if perhaps this is a major contributor.

USB 2.0 should be able to fall back to 1.1 but it's anyone's guess if the applications permit that. I don't have any to test, unfortunately, but every USB device I've tried works fine in Windows as well as OS X. And every time there is a need to command the unwanted OS to release the device so the other can use it.

I use OS X to sync my Treo 600 so have no need to do that in Windows.

I was just able to print to my Canon Pixma iP90 printer that has the bluetooth module installed. I used Bonjour on Win2000 and set up printer sharing on the OSX side. The quality is not good, but it does print in color using the generic/microsoft printer settings. The postscript setting was limited to grayscale printing.

This allows me to print wirelessly (using bluetooth) to my Canon, as well as connecting a USB cable for higher quality printing.

iPod Nano, USB floppy drive, Sony DSC-W100 Camera, Treo 600, HP ColorJet printer, 2g thumb drive, 1g thumb drive, USB to Serial adapter, HP flat bed scanner, Firewire webcam. All but the firewire webcam (It's a very old model) works in both OS X and Windows XP on both MBP and Mac Mini. I've yet to find a USB device that does not work. The flatbed scanner has no driver support from HP for OS X so it is useless there, but it is seen. It works fine in XP. I'm about to purchase a joystick and will provide info on how that goes. To be honest, it isn't important to me if any of these works in Windows as that is not where I use them, but I was curious to see if they could. The scanner is going to be replaced with one that is properly supported natively in OS X and will definitely not be a WinHP brand.

Can you tell me which USB-Serial adaper you are using? I have tried the Keyspan USA-19HS and the USA-49WLC with no luck. The 19HS can be seen by the keyspan assistant software but not send data reliably and the 4 port model is not recognized by the keyspan software, let alone available for use by other software.

Parallels staff,

Any updates on timing on some of these things? I don't mean to be a pain here as I'm sure you are working hard on this, but we are all obviously very anxious for proper USB support (from my point of view, all I care about is a USB headset).

Thanks,

David

Hmmm, when I use the 19HS, I find that it is at best intermitent. I once got it to talk to my GPS using EasyGPS (I think) but my lab software to talk to a piece of lab equipment always gives me a timeout error. I'll give it another try.

I celebrate your good luck with USB devices under Parallels, but you are posting in a 7-page thread with people complaining about lack of USB support. So please don't come here saying that Parallels is the "wrong product" for USB support simply because you don't need this feature.

I spoke too soon. It worked fine in RC2, but no longer works since I installed GA.
Just wanted to follow up here. I've been using a Mac so long I had forgotten about all of the mindless crap you gotta do to keep a Windohs machine running. I did the pointless uninstall-and-reinstall-hardware shuffle on my Kvaser USB-to-CAN adapter, and it magically started working again.

Spike

Three days later and it has magically stopped working again. The pointless shuffle has no effect now. What's worse, the Linux driver for this device is so bad that in order to make it do anything you gotta boot to Windohs first and do something with the device, then reboot to Linux without unplugging it.

I like what I've seen of Parallels thus far, but until the USB support is stable it's basically useless for me.

I use OS X to sync my Treo 600 so have no need to do that in Windows.

dp
I absolutely HAVE to have USB 2.0.
My 250gb USB 2.0 drive only works at reduced speed (USB 1.1)

When I turn it on in Windows, Windows connects it, but proclaims that I've installed a USB 2.0 device into a USB 1.1 plug on the back of my Apple 23" Wide-Screen display. From what my brother tells me, the USB 2.0 connections on the back of my 17" iMac are all supposed to be USB 2.0. I know the connections on the back of the Apple Pro Keyboard are both USB 1.1, so I have the USB 2.0 HD plugged into the back of my Apple Cinema Display.

Any solutions from Parallels yet? I just purchased Parallels Desktop 2.1 (Mac).

Parallels emulates USB 1.1, but at much higher speeds if your physical device is USB 2.0 and plugged in to a USB 2.0 port. AFAIK, all USB ports on Intel Macs are USB 2.0. If you test your drive on your Mac in the VM and on a Windows hardware machine, you will probably see comparable speeds. The assumption that a report of USB 1.1 means only USB 1.1 speed is not accurate.

Device: Garmin Forerunner 305

OS: Windows XP SP2

Symptom: Similar to other posts. XP recognized the unit and installed the Garmin drivers. The unit is recognized by the device manager. Garmin's software, Training Center (3.1.4), though doesn't recognize it. I have tried connecting the unit to different USB ports on my iMac (Parallels Workstation RC2), but the same symptoms occur.

Affects: Cannot use the device with XP under Parallels Workstation. The device works fine on PC hardware.

If this would work, I could drop my Windoze box in the recycle bin.

Hello, I'm having a difficult USB issue too. Has anyone tried using a CAC reader with Parallels and had success in having the CAC reader install and work with ActivCard Gold. I hate to say it here, but on my old iBook using VPC 7.0, it worked like a charm and I was able to do everything I needed to with my card reader. I really need this functionality...just curious. I'm using a MacBook Pro 2.0 1.5GB RAM, running Parallels RC2. Thanks guys.
Ray

Yes, I am too having problems. The CAC is seen by Parallels but the drive does not seem to function properly. When I view the hardware in System, the CAC reader is there. I click on the CAC reader and the driver General tab indicates that the driver is not installed; however, when I click on the driver tab, it indicates that the driver is installed. I too need this functionality. I was able to get the CAC reader ti work in BootCamp. I like Parallels MUCH better. Someone - Parallels - PLEASE HELP!

Ok first i love parallels cause i can use my mapping program on it and not have to reboot into bootcamp.

Now I solved the camming issue by not using the cams in parallels. The new yahoo works great for camming in mac OS X and a program called aMSN runs MSN in mac but without sound i think but cams are great. And Jmeeting runs the isight cam also, Although the cam has a blue tint , but think that will get worked out sometime. But i am not that good looking anyway so blue is ok. lmao.

So my big complaint of not having cams is over. And the windows now runs all the programs i need to run. so Parallels fills all my needs.

I still have to run bootcamp to use my GPS on my mapping. But when driving i dont need Mac OS running anyway. so i am happy camper. Who know maybe someday the gps will run on Parallels then i can trash Bootcamp. Oh glorious day. lol

BTW anyone using aMSN with router or airport will have to do little reading of the port mapping notes. haha and then try to figure out what it really says :):)

Please add the new Motorola Q to the list of products that won't work in Parallels. Running RC2 XP SP2. It sees a driver, but won't do anything with it.

Seeing that this is the only posting that comes up re: Motorola Q, Parallels, and Win XP, I'd like to add that the Motorola Q is still not working properly with the Microsoft ActiveSync 4.1.0 (Build 4841) software that are distributed with with the Q phone.

To the earlier poster who suggested that developing this kind of software and working USB support "can't be that hard", consider taking an OS design and implementation course. This is not trivial stuff here. The Parallels, VMware, and Xen folks know what the hell they are doing. After you take this course, consider every type of OS that might be running virtually and its USB driver architecture. Then you will see firsthand how non-trivial it is.

That said, I am a paying customer and am disappointed that I cannot get this working. I would suggest to the Parallels team that they prioritize the development of these sorts of devices, which are sorely lacking support on the OS X platform and (for the foreseeable future) likely require a virtual Windows session to be used effectively.

I bought a Sprint 7130 BlackBerry today and I now have it working as an EV-DO modem within Parallels! :)

I'm using the Beta Update, and this didn't work for me in the GA release.

When I first installed the Beta Update, I re-tested the USB functionality using a T-Mobile 7100. With the Beta Update I was able to use that BlackBerry as a modem, but due to the phone's limitations it was slow. But it encouraged me to buy the 7130.

For others that are trying this, hear are some more details:

It took me several attempts to get this working. Finally, I installed an older version of the BB Desktop Manager. The file that I installed from was called 40119dt.exe.

continued below ...

My first post was truncated. Grrr. Here are the rest of the details.

The 7130 came with a 4.1 version of Desktop Manager, but Sprint has another earlier version (40033) available on their website.

I installed the older version of Desktop Manager prior to installing the Sprint Connection Manager.

When I installed the Sprint Connection Manager, I did NOT include the Blackberry device drivers.

After that, everything just worked. Plugged in the 7130, it was recognized by Desktop Manager and the EV-DO connection went through without a hitch.

As a bonus, I also enable Internet Connection Sharing for the Sprint connection, so now my host OS can also piggy back on the EV-DO! :D

The key, at least for me was to leave the blackberry desktop manager running before I started up the Sprint Connection Manager. Once the BBDM saw the device, then the SCM saw the phone and it was THEN able to connect.

via the Speak Easy speed test, 540k down and 84k up.

Nice.

Could you use iSight in BootCamp? Does it have drivers for XP?
With RC2 (1920) the iSigth is now recognized by Windows XP SP2 in Parallels!
The driver is available from Apple (you have to extract it from Bootcamp)!

The problem is once the iSight is seen by XP, confirmed by a dong-ding, a second later, XP will issue a ding-dong to confirm it has been disconnected. A second later a dong-ding, etc. continuously connecting, disconnecting. It is unusable. So it is very close to be solved, but still the last road block needs to be removed.

I have a MacBook Pro with integrated iSight. To connect it in Parallels, I use the USB button in the bottom right of the screen and I check the iSight in the menu.

Hope Parallels is looking at it, since I reported the problem to no answer yet.

The Sony Ericsson m600i won't connect to the VM. It constantly says something is "using it" on the Mac side (but nothing is).

Are you programmer?

How do you know it "can't be that hard".

As stated before, getting USB to be shared between two different OSes at the same time is not trivial at all.

Compared to some of the other things they share, it is, frankly, nowhere near as complex.

For my part, my Toro TimePod for programming sprinklers stopped working in 1922 and 1940. 5-10 seconds deal. It was working before. I wonder if my 8125 cell phone will still work.

Another USB glitch on Build 1940 with a HASP4 USB 1.33 dongle

USB device you are trying to connect to the virtual machine is being used by another process. Wait 5-10 seconds, then try to connect the device again. If this does not help, find the application that blocked up the device and disconnect it manually.

This is a major issue for me since the only reason I have to use XP (and therefore Parallels) is the Brain Innovations 'Brain Voyager 2000' software that requires said dongle.

At least is shows some lifesigns in since the last build, e.g. starts blinking, gets detected and reports itself working, but that's all, the reader program cannot get the certifications from the card.

And the worst thing is, that everything's fine under Fusion. (except the CPU usage, Parallels beats Vmware with almost 10% less usage.)

frustrating, isn't it?... in my case voip applications is my major thing, and not being able to work with my preferred headsets is huge... just like in your case.... PERFECT under Fusion.... I hope Parallel's team get this resolved soon.

Yep, exactly. Since my VPN is authenticating over smartcard, this feature costs 15 GB in my HD. Well, it's quite OK until VMWare goes gold, and starts costing some money. THEN we have to decide, and I would be very sad to drop Parallels. So keep on hoping.

Since the new builds are coming out so quickly, it might be a good idea when reporting devices not working to include the Parallels build number so the developers will have a bit more of a clue what to test, and whether a later build may have fixed whatever wasn't working.

Just a thought...

Device: CANcaseXL and CANcaseXL Log
MFG: Vector (www.vector-cantech.com)
USB 2.0 (1.1 compatible)
Parallels: 3150
OS: XP sp2, all updates, 512MB RAM
Mac PowerBookPro: 2.33GHz C2D, OSX 10.4.8, all updates, 2GB RAM

XP detects the CANcaseXL adapter on insert into USB trips into driver install as expected.

During installation of drivers in XP either
Parallel crashes to the Mac's report to Apple option,
or Mac OS crashes to the cycle power screen.

The crash occurs after selection of the driver file (vcanxl.sys) when manually selecting.

FYI: CAN is a serial bus used in vehicles, heavy equipment, etc.

Did you find a solution? I am currently trying to do the same thing, but XP doesn't crash.

I have the CANcaseXL adapter and it installs the driver. After installing the driver, it reports that the device is not working properly.

I've been having the same problem. I bought parallels to connect to my corporate network which requires a smartcard. I've been unable to get it to connect (latest build tested was 3186). I've also tried another brand of USB cardreader with simular problems.

Just to add my show-stopper:

Device: Philips TSU7500 Remote Control
MFR: Philips Consumer Electronics Company
OS: Windows XP SP2, latest patches
Symptom: XP installs driver just fine, gets the "USB Connected" chime, but Pronto Pro Edit software reports that the device is not supported. Works fine under Boot Camp.

This has been the same since I first started using Parallels months ago, and is still with me in the latest release.

Device: Canon DR-2080c Scanner
MFR: Canon
OS: Windows XP SP2
Symptom: Twain driver installed fine, device selected from USB menu, when trying to scan, I get the "No Device Found," even though it is plugged in and ready to go.
Affect: Cannot use scanner with my MacBook Pro inside Windows.

The ActiveHome software can't read the time from the device; when I try to download to it, it takes many minutes (versus a couple of seconds on a real Windows machine) and doesn't seem to actually affect the device (sometimes with error messages, sometimes without).

Build 3188.

I have build 3212, and I would like to inform everyone that after days of struggling with the syncing situation between my p910a Sony Ericsson phone and my MacBook, I have finally got them working together flawlessly. Here is what I did, if it helps:

Settings:
- Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 w/Installation of Bonjour -- I don't know if it matters, but it is supposed to help with USB communications
-Build 3212
-USB Enabled
-Autoconnect is off
-OS Window for viewing -- if it matters since the staff guy said it may

1. Originally installed all Sony apps, and nothing work at all.
2. Uninstalled all the Sony apps and started over.
3. I first started with downloading the phone dock driver from Sony website.
4. Plugged in the dock into a USB port and it detected new hardware (SEMC DSS SyncStation) once I manually selected it from the VM (Virtual Machine) USB list in the bottom right list of icons.
5. Pointed the Install Wizard to the correct folder (DSS folder) that contained the drivers.
6. The install wizard popped up again with another new hardware called, as well as my memory recalls, a USB Serial Port, so I pointed to the same DDS folder to install the other driver. Then it finished.
7. Then I downloaded and installed the Sony Ericsson PC Suite from the website.
8. Restarted the OS.
9. Then I made sure the USB device was checked in the VM icon on the bottom right part of parallels.
10. Then I double clicked on the sync icon (two opposite pointing arrows) in the Windows XP Tray and checked the USB connect.
11. Plugged in my phone and it worked.

I tried to remember everything for you guys out there. I hope it helps.

Device: ProntpPro / ProntoProEdit NG - Universal remote control/Programming software
Manufacturer: Philips
VM: Windows XP

Windows detects the device as being present, but data cannot be uploaded or downloaded.

Just installed the latest as of December 6 2007 (v3.0 build 5580) and STILL does not work. It gets further than it did before, but erroneously reports that "The battery level of the connected device is too low to start download or upload." even when it's plugged into the AC adapter.

Folks: VMWare works PERFECTLY, i suggest you use that. Parallels guys: we need this, so we are forced to use your competitor's product??

Another broken USB device... *sigh*

MSP430 USB-Debug-Interface. It's a JTAG debugger. Sadly our client is using it so I have to use it as well. When I plug it in to Parallels (either with automatic or from the USB menu) it crashes the machine hard (kernel crash). Brings the whole Mac down and requires a hard power-off and restart.

Anyone have any clue what's wrong or a work-around?

Device: GPSMap296
MFR: Garmin
OS: Windows XP SP2
Symptom: "Device in use by another application.."

unplug all USB devices.
attach GPSMap296
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
if it fails, to unload -check up Mac OS , because it thinks it is storage device
Attach to Windows, if success

GPS devices have 2 mode as storage and as device
mac recognizes them as storage device by default
I suggested you to unload USB storage device when you connect GPS, and connect it to Windows, in this case Mac should unload hold device

Thanks. It isn't that. There is no evidence of the GPS on the Mac. The sudo command said it had failed and check up didn't see the device when connected.

John@Parallels
Jul 13, 2008, 02:41 PM
It failed to unload kext that is the reason you cannot connect device to Windows
In use means mac OS holds it
