I want to configure my Windows 8.1 VM to have more memory, so have gone to the configuration screen in Parallels Desktop to do it.

On there, I get the message that the VM must be shut down in order to reconfigure memory - sounds reasonable!

However, whenever I shut down my VM, Parallels Desktop shuts down too, and when I restart Parallels Desktop, the VM starts up again.

How do I run Parallels Desktop with my VM shut down, so I can reconfigure the memory? I'm sure I'm missing something basic - but can't see where!

Found the answer, thanks to an online chat session with a Parallels support technician.

I needed to change the "On VM Shutdown" option to "Keep window open". It was set to "Quit Parallels desktop".
