Is 10.4.10 compatible with PD 3.0?
 

Just today Apple came up with their Tiger update of 10.4.10. Is it compatible with PD 3.0?

It is still working fine for me after installing the new Mac OS X 10.4.10 update.

I have upgraded to 10.4.10 and Parallels and my USB devices still work.

No problems since upgrading to 10.4.10 here either.

If you are a happy owner of PD 3.0, it is safe to upgrade to 10.4.10 now. We are not aware of any compatibility issues.

If you are a happy owner of PD 2.5 (both builds 3188 and 3212), it is not recommended to update to 10.4.10 now if your production environment relies on USB support in PD. There’s a known compatibility problem with Parallels Desktop build 3188 and 3212 USB implementation and Mac OS X 10.4.10. We are issuing and update for 2.5 within next two days that fixes the compatibility problem

It might be a good idea to make this a sticky note on the Mac forums until the update for 2.5 is out or surely there will be problems and more rants.

Appreciate the heads up. I am using PD build 3212 without any problems and wish to keep it that way. So while I normally update my Mac OS fairly quickly, I will wait a few days this time so I can update my PD first.

Caution, a number of people (including myself) are seeing Kernel Panics occuring frequently. In my case I had an existing PD 3.0 installation and working Vista VM. I've seen a number of panics that seem to be related to the parallels kernel extensions. I've uninstalled PD for now to see if system remains stable - so far, so good.

The update for version 2.5 to build 3214 is available now and your Parallels Update option should be able to find and download it for you. If that fails then it can be found here:

PD 3214 is available now. I got it by running my PD 3212 then checking for updates.

As for reverting back to 10.4.9, that is likely an issue you will want to post on Apple's discussion board, or call Apple care if you have it.

I have found USB to work well in 4128 and 10.4.10. Perhaps if you could be specific about the USB device and your Hardware configuration we could help you get it working. There are, no doubt, some devices which may not work, but most we can help you with.

USB in P3.0 with 10.4.10
 

The USB device which, so far, won't work is the IrDa Bridge for the Polar Heart Watch. It's a USB device, not USB2. I have installed the Polar driver, which says it's for WIN 2000 and I suspect that's the problem.

Polar makes a USB2 interface which is supposed to be Vista compatible -- I've just ordered one. The Polar website says it uses native Vista IR drivers-- we'll see!

The other device is a Durametric ODBII diagnostic tool for Porsche. That does seem to work OK in my current configuration.

Thanks for the quick attention -- if you have any suggestion about how I might get the USB1 Polar thing working, I'm interested. If not, we can just wait and see if the new Polar thingie does the trick.

You are in luck. I have a Polar HRM RS800 which is working fine through the IrDA bridge.

The driver for this device comes preinstalled in Windows XP. You might need to uninstall the 2000 driver. Check add/remove programs in Windows to see if there is anything you can uninstall.

Also, have you ever had the IrDA sucessfully working in Windows? If so, you can skip the rest of this paragragh. There are multiple versions of the IrDA device, especially if you bought the less expensive non-Polar device, and you need the right one that matches up with your watch. If in doubt, look up your watch at the BodyTronics.com website and make sure you have the right IrDA device.

Also, I used to have a Polar S600. It came with a USB 1.0 device. It will not work at all on the Mac because Polar wrote a custom interface that did not conform to the USB standard.

I found that the Mac did not recognize the IrDA device, and therefore, it was not showing up in the Parallels Devices/USB menu. What finally worked for me is:
1) unplug the IrDA from the USB port
2) Start your XP VM. (If it is running, shut it down and restart.) -
3) With XP running, check the Parallels Devices/USB drop down menu and take note of the devices available.
4) Now plug in the USB IrDA device into a USB port. Give it 10-15 seconds.
5) Now, check the Parallels Devices/USB menu again. You should see "IrDA/USB Bridge as a selection. Click on it to place a check mark next to it.
6) You may have to wait a bit as Windows finds the Driver
7) From now on, the IrDA should be on the list, although if you reboot the Mac, you may have to repeat steps 1-5. The last couple of times, I have not had to repeat, so it may be that either Parallels 3.0 or OSX 10.4.10 fixed this...I don't know.

Now connect your Watch to the Polar SW just as you would in Windows.

Forgot to add that I'm running Vista.
Looked at the Device Manager on another non-Parallels XP SP2 laptop with the Polar USB device installed. It shows up as a separate item, i.e. NOT under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". I suspect that means it's the Polar version which isn't USB compliant? (the watch is a 625x).
Also searched in Parallels/Vista VM for the driver I supposedly installed -- it's not there. So I think at this point I have a non-USB compliant device with Polar drivers which don't work in Vista.
The new USB2 Polar IR interface will be here Monday/Tuesday and it's supposed to be Vista compatible; not going to mess around with the old hardware any more.
