The update of Parallels Desktop for Mac with the hotfix for MacBook Air kernel crashes is now available. This thread is closed by Xenos. Please ask any questions you have on the build 5592 in this thread.

I'm getting a kernel crash using parallels under osx 10.5.1 (and also under 10.5.2). I think it has to do with the x3100 graphics in the air, but am not certain. Anyone else having this problem? My crash log says it is a result of com.parallels.kext.vmmain(3.0).

    Crashlog

    Forgot to attach the crashlog.

BTW -- I've disabled VT-x in 5584, and this appears to have stopped the kernel panics; don't know if anyone else has seen this...

Just an update -- turning vt-x doesn't solve the problem. You can reproduce the problem by using iTunes video playback while there is video playback in Parallels.

This problem is being reported on the apple discussion boards. Don't know why they are discussing it over there ;)

    Kernel Crash

I am having the same exact problem. Tons of Kernel Crashes but only when I am in Parallels. Should I call Apple or is this a parallels issue?? I have the latest build and uninstalled and then reinstalled but I am having the same issue. Will there be an update or patch from parallels. Thanks

    Parallels Issue

This is a parallels issue. Fusion does not suffer from this issue (although it does crash when trying to use the virtual CD drive.) I think the Air has introduced a couple of tricky issues for everyone.

Since I have to use a windows app on my Air, I switched to Fusion. I still think the parallels product is better (been using it now for around 2 years, and bought a license just for the Air), but the kernel crash is a deal breaker -- I don't know why this hasn't gotten more attention (although it does get a good deal of attention at Apple's discussion board).

I seem to have the same problem.. My macbook air is hanging pretty often when I run WinXp Pro under parallels.

Hope that you are able to make a fix for this issue pretty quickly.

    Best Regards
    Henrik

I am having the exact same issue with kernel panic crashes on my MBA. It does not seem to happen when I am working though, only if I walk away from my computer for a couple hours while Parallels is running. I know the Parallels team has been able to recreate the issue, but what about a fix. Never had this issue on my MBP or iMac.

I would be happy to test out a quickfix or beta.
Mine crashes when I am working sometimes after 30 mins sometime every other minutes.
I am starting to have the feeling that it is more prone to crashing when I switch between Mac OS and windows applications. But I am not absolutly confident that is the case.

    MBA issue

I do not think I am having a carnal crash but I have kicked some error message back to Apple 5 times. I am getting very good at clean re-installs. First time around my Boot Camp version of XP is out of focus and the track pad does not tap. I then load Parallels and all is rosey. Focused, trackpad functions super. When the machine goes to sleep or it is shutdown, no go. If I try to restart Parallels, I get the spinning wheel of death going on and on. When I restart and try to boot camp to XP I get an error message the windows could not start because of a missing or corrupt file: "<windows root>\system32\hal.dll"
Any thoughts? Granted this was 3.0 build 4128 and perhaps all will be good with a new version. I will try that before my next reinstall.

I have also been experiencing frequent kernel panics due to Parallels on my Macbook Air. It's been very frustrating, so I called Apple technical support. They looked over my error logs and confirmed that it's an issue with Parallels. Until a fix is posted, I'm not going to be able to use Parallels, so hopefully someone will let us know when the problem has been solved.

    Repeated kernel panics

I'm getting kernel panics after loading Windows XP on my Air too. I haven't found any particular event that triggers the panic. I've included one of the kernel panic logs below.

I am happy that other Air owners are showing up, Atleast it does not seem to be my Air alone with that problem. I bought Parallels because I need windows on my machine but would like to have OS.X at hand without dualbooting. But when I have to worry about it crashing then that kinda goes down the hole..
Well the more people who complain the faster it will get fixed ;-)

    same problem here

Running 5584 against XP in Bootcamp and same problem - black screen of death.

VMWare Fusion is working fine but I'd much prefer to be using Parallels.

Would be more than willing to test any patch builds to see if problem is solved.

    So it's not just me

Wow, I've spent the better part of today uninstalling/reinstalling Parallels and XP on my Macbook Air. I've tried playing with every single setting that might cause the kernel crash. No matter what I do, I get a kernel crash every time I run Parallels.

    So it's not just me.

I just made the switch and bought my first macbook. (My last Apple computer was an Apple IIc). Being able to run a couple of essential Windows only applications finally won me over. The irony is that I can't because parallels crashes my kernel every time.

Fortunately, I'm still on my trial key. How much would it suck to pay $80 for software that just crashes the most stable, mainstream OS!

Unless this problem is fixed, I'm certainly not going to buy a license.

For the record, 10.5.2, 5584, and com.parallels.kext.vmmain is in the error report after rebooting.

This appears to be related to a thermal issue with the GPU. When connected to an external monitor, the panic happens much faster and reliably.

Also, it appears that a panic can be delayed by giving priority to OS X applications instead of to the VM.

In any event, it's an irritating problem.
