Today we installed the update for Parallels for Mac, and our installation of Windows 8.1 now fails to boot. This then locks up the Mac (hence the screen shot taken on the phone!)

This is a major problem, and I am hoping there is a simpler fix than blowing away the windows 8.1 parallel and creating a new one.

I'd welcome any thoughts on how to recover from this problem!

    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hello Alex,

Please click on Virtual Machine -> Stop

By default the Virtual Machine .pvm file is located in : Mac HD/Users/Username/Documents/Parallels or Mac HD/Users/Shared/Parallels

The size of the .PVM file should be a minimum of 3-4 GB.

Open the Windows 8.1.PVM file by double clicking on it from the location where it is present and then check if it is running !!!

    Thanks Maheesh,

I won't be out on site with the user until tomorrow morning, and will give this a go then.

I will also try the second option from this link (advanced trouble shooting) - don't want to loose the installed apps if we can help it:
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/114987

A similar alternative may involve running bootrec (although it’s suggested for windows XP and windows 7 – don’t know if it will work with windows 8):
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

If that fails we can try the first option in the first link, and just accept the loss of installed applications, and the productivity downtime to recover them.

If that fails then it may be necessary to create a new parallel :(

Pretty dissapointed in the upgrade process!

Not verry happy with the updating process!!!

    Hi Alex,

    Thanks 'for your quick response.

Right click on the .PVM file -> Open with -> Parallels Mounter.

If you are able to mount the Virtual Hard Disk but still if you are unable to run the Virtual Machine we can help you with retrieving the files from

Virtual Machine by creating a new operating system and then map this Hard disk to the new Virtual Machine.

If it doesn't help, please send us a direct message with your email address and with Problem Report (http://kb.parallels.com/9058) so that

we could assist in a better way with this issue.
