Default Does Parallels v5 support "Windows XP Mode" in Win7?

    Hi,

I have one program that won't run correctly under Windows 7 x64. Win7 has this "Windows XP Mode" which creates an XP environment for the program to run under. From reading the documentation, Win7 creates a "Windows Virtual PC" to run these programs.

Can Parallels v5 create this "Windows Virtual PC" environment? The tool that Microsoft provides to check processor compatibility reports that my processor is not able to run a Virtual PC. This may be because Win7 is a VM.

    Thanks.

    Mike

    Hello Mike,

XP Mode is indeed a virtual machine, distributed by Microsoft in the form of VHD (Microsoft virtual disk). The VHD is licensed for use only on a computer running at least one of the following editions of Windows 7: Windows 7 Professional, Windows Ultimate or Windows Enterprise.

XP mode requires hardware virtualization feature to run. This CPU feature virtualization is not supported by Parallels Desktop, so XP mode will not run inside a virtual machine.

    Regards,
    Max

Omen, but you can install WinXP in another Virtual Machine if this application is critical for you and.

    Hi,

Thanks for the responses. I thought it wouldn't work, but I wanted to ask anyway.

The program I'm having a problem with is installed in an XP SP3 Boot Camp partition, so I can use Parallels to copy the partition and create a VM from it. That way I'll be able to get rid of the Boot Camp partition altogether.

Have you tried running in 'compatibility mode', also running as administrator?

    Hi Salamat,

I've tried all the XP/Vista/200 compatibility modes, and also using the "Run as Administrator" right-click and also in the Compatibility tab, but the program always gets the message "Registry area appears locked. Cannot continue." Every other program I've installed under Win7 x64 installs and runs fine. T
