Slow Start
I have not been about to figger this out when run vm windows xp and just do a apple-Q to quit it quits very fast. But some times it takes a long time icon in dock keeps turning over and over. If this happens slow quit it takes a long time next time I start it up icon turning over and over and over.

Does any one know why this is happen?

Because it is suspending the virtual OS, which means it is writing the state of RAM to the disk. You can verify this when you start the virtual OS again and it comes right back to the place you were when you quit. Not like a reboot where you are just at your desktop. I think I remember the window "flying away" like getting small and fading around a curve the last time I did it. If you actually power of the VM then it doesn't fly away like that . . .

I have a "borrowed" version of XP Pro that has unlimited activation so after it does it once it never asks me again. At this point I dont ever use boot camp reason being is if I ever get a virus or something happens to windows I have a back up and up-to-date copy on my external drive so I dont have to worry about anything good job Parallels team keep up the good work. Fusion has got nothing on you guys

It's suspending the state of your OS running within Parallels - freezing it as it is when you closed to be opened exactly as-is next time you start up the virtual machine.

Hope this helps.

Because you suspended the OS and didn't shut it down prolly . . . the next time you start the VM you should be exactly where you where when you suspended it, unlike a reboot where you will just be at the desktop. I could be wrong?!

Parallels still does not see my Windows XP that is installed on my PATA drive in the second optical bay.

I can 'option' boot to XP when starting my Mac Pro and the PATA drive is mounted on the Mac desktop when in OSX. Partition set as MBR, is first partition on drive and is formatted NTFS.

Why is the "USE BOOT CAMP" option still greyed out when I run Parallels. If PATA drives are not supported then someone at Parallels should state this. If they are supported then why won't it work!

Extremely frustrated at this point,
john

Windblows XP Reactivation
The last time I installed the most recent version of Parallels, I had to reactivate my copy of XP. I have noticed other comments along the same line. Has this issue been addressed? What else should I know belfore installing the latest build?
thanks in advance.

The release says "No need to re-activate Windows each time you switch between Boot Camp and Parallels. Activate Windows only once inside Parallels and work in both environments"

So it should just take one activation. I haven't had to reactivate at all, I assume due to corporate licensing.

Boot Camp still greyed out
I run Parallels on a 2.66GHz Mac Pro with two internal hard drives. The first one, a GPT formatted disk, came with the machine, and it only has Mac OS X (10.4.8). The second hard drive came from a PC, and it has a MBR partition table. Internelly, that second drive has two partitions. The first one is NTFS for Windows XP 2nd edition (32-bit); the second one is a 32Gb FAT32 partition.

This is the output of a "mount" command:
/dev/disk1s2 on / (local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (local)
fdesc on /dev (union)
<volfs> on /.vol
/dev/disk0s1 on /Volumes/Windows (local, read-only)
/dev/disk0s2 on /Volumes/FAT32 (local)
automount -nsl [181] on /Network (automounted)
automount -fstab [189] on /automount/Servers (automounted)
automount -static [189] on /automount/static (automounted)
/dev/disk2s6 on /Volumes/LaCie Disk (local, nodev, nosuid)

Please, notice that even though I did install Boot Camp on my system, I did that solely to create the Macintosh Drivers for Windows XP (Boot Camp 1.1.2). I didn't have to create a Boot Camp partition as such, since my second hard drive came from a PC. I simply reinstalled Windows XP on top of a pre-existing Windows NTFS partition.

Will this ever work under Parallels?

Thanks otherwise for a very impressive program. As far as I can see, the only three things missing for a 100% perfect program are:
1. Dragging and dropping files and folders from any Finder window (including the Mac Desktop) to ANY Windows Explorer window (not just the Windows Desktop).
2. 3D acceleration
3. 64-bit support

Accessing an external Windows Drive
Just downloaded your latest Beta and decided to try the Boot Camp feature. It's working great, excellent program.

I have a question though. Since I have a MacBook Pro, I made my Boot Camp partition small (15GB), and used a external firewire drive to put a number of low use programs (but large). When I bring up the machine in Boot Camp I would just attach the external drive and everything would be fine. How do I attach that drive to the Parallels Boot Camp Virtual Machine? The only thing I can think of is to use the Shared Folder tool, but how do I run the programs I've installed on that drive?

Logitech IO2 pen still not working
Build 3106 - installed over the last beta just fine. My Windows XP SP2 booted fine and autoupgraded the Parallels Tools. Very nice.

Still :( on USB devices however. Logitech IO2 driver still won't recognize the pen. I guess this would be a synchronous USB device mentioned in the welcome post. Really wish it was working..

(Sad to say it worked right away in VMWare Fusion)...

Still sticking to Parallels overall..

BootCamp option not working on second SATA drive
I have a Mac Pro with 2 SATA drives. I have used BootCamp to install Windows XP SP2 on my second SATA drive. I have no problems booting it up. When I create a Bootcamp configuration within Parallels everything seems fine until it tries to start. The drive unmounts, the BIOS screen comes up but then it says:

"Boot from hard drive... Error loading operating system"

Should my configuration work?

I also have a problem with Parallels on a 2.66 GHz Mac Pro with two internal drives. Both drives have a BootCamp partition - one to work with and one to experiment with !! For the first time, release 3106 allows me to set up a VM with a BootCamp partition (previously it was greyed out). However, when I try to start the VM, it says that Parallels does not support 2 BootCamp partitions.

Is this likely to be addressed soon?

Thanks.

I'd like to see that clarified... Does it TRULY mean what it says, activate in Parallels once and work in both, or do you have to activate it in BootCamp once, then activate in Parallels, meaning TWO activations? In other words, can I take a fresh install of Windows, throw it on a BootCamp created partition, then bring it up under Parallels, activate, and have it work without problems in both environments?

WOW = Ubuntu runs like it is a video being fast forwarded
I don't know why but Ubuntu Edgy is much faster now. The screen resolution from the last beta is fixed (24 bit screen resolution) and the little bit I tested is very fast. I am even getting a lower score in the Gnometris game because it seems like it is in fast forward as well. Even the taskbar system monitor applet seems like it is on speed. I don't use Windows so I don't know of any problems or benefits with that OS, but Edgy is performing very well. booting and shutdown seem faster too.
MacBook C2D 2.0 (white) 1.5gig ram. Great job to the Parallels team. I have VMWare and Parallels on this MacBook and I thought VMWare had the edge until I installed beta3.

Anyway now I want to go compile a kernel and see how that does . . .

Okay, after shutting down and starting it again it seems to be running as I would expect. I don't know what made it go so fast the first time?! Anyway this isn't a complaint at all. I haven't jumped into the deep end testing it but what I have tested works great. I am thinking I will remove VMWare at this rate.

More grief:networking, add/remove programmes
As well as not having coherence, I also cannot use any networking other than bridged networking and when I go to add/remove programmes 90% of the "programmes" I have are black vertical bars!! Curiouser and curiouser.....

Windows XP using Bootcamp Partition
I created the virtual machine through the wizard, to use the bootcamp partition (Windows XP). But when I try to boot it, I get an error message:

Parallels Desktop cannot find necessary drivers to configure your Boot Camp partition. Please refer to Help> Parallels Desktop Help> Using Boot Camp Windows XP Installation for troubleshooting.

How do I fix this? I didn't have any prior versions of Parallels installed.
