Why, with RC1, RC2 and now RC3, after I open a suspended desktop, it wants to reinstall Parallels Tools? I'm surprised it's not fixed.

Very simply, if you're running in Coherence and you choose Actions->Suspend and then reopen the session the Parallels tools installer comes on.
Actually, I'm seeing the same behaviour, but with the Parallels Compressor. Very frequently when I reopen a session, the Compressor kicks in (which then results in a reboot).

Posted a thread at http://forums.parallels.com/thread8886.html - seems to be the same behaviour, but with Compressor

Fatal Error In Virtual Machine Monitor!
[quote=Tim Surgent]Hello everyone!

Parallels Desktop for Mac build 3170 RC3 is now available for download.

Hi Tim,

I wanted to send this reply to someone at Parallels who would see it. I am getting Fatal Error in Virtual Machine monitor errors in RC3. These happen particularly when I try to load copy-protected psychological testing software from a company called PAR inc. They are one of the largest psychological testing companies in the world, and protect most of their materials with copy protection using programs called CC Change and CC Move. These programs, essential in my work, loaded properly in Build 1970, but have produced fatal VM errors in 3150 and 3170.

Current equipment is a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo/2.33; 250mb hard disk, 2048 of memory 1024 assigned to VM, not running in Coherence mode nor in Bootcamp.

Please let me know if further information would help. I've been letting the machine send the automated failure reports to Parallels and have also sent e-mails to beta@parallels.com. I thought I'd try this way of getting through in the hopes this can be fixed before the final release. Thanks.

Successfully synched my Palm TX with Frankling PlanPlus v5.1 via USB. Speed is noticably faster with USB2.

Only problem was BSOD on first WinXP boot. Executed a Safe Boot, installed Parallels Tools...rebooted. Problem resolved.

Vista install fails, disk drive not recognized
When I try to install the Vista upgrade (from a VM with XP), the disk drive is not recognized by Vista, so it can't be installed. It keeps asking me for loading the driver. Where is this driver located ?

RC 3, build 3170, still won't activate the dongle - USB Key Ver 1.0 Microcosm Ltd. - without which I can't run the one application I need.

The dongle is detected and appears on the Devices menu. However, it works even less than 3150, which at least lit it up briefly. This one does nothing.

This dongle works fine under 1970. Mac Pro, X.4.8, guest OS Win2K.

?

(Have also sent to support.)

mouse right click
I just upgraded to Parallels 3170 (I was on 1970) and decided to look at the keyboard mapping options. I am using a MacBook Pro. Until now I had used the default key settings. I am using a Win2K guest.

What I would like to do is use a Ctrl-Click to simulate the right mouse click, without a shift. I would like to use the Command key for hotkeys as well as multiple select. I never use the Windows keys, so don't mind losing that functionality.

I thought Parallels now allowed this -- I told it to swap Ctrl/Command, and told the right-click to use Ctrl only (no shift). However, this also impacted the right click sequence -- although I had picked Ctrl, it mapped to Command.

I then tried to set the right click modifier to Command only, thinking that this would then map the mouse into Ctrl. However, Parallels requires Ctrl or Alt to be picked. I cannot pick only Command.

I also noticed that non-Ctrl modifiers did not work for me. For example Alt-Click, Alt-Shift-Click, etc.

Finally, I tried AutoHotKey and KeyTweak to try to remap the Win keys into Ctrl in Windows. However this only worked for Ctrl-based hotkeys; it did not work for multiple select.

Can Parallels be changed to allow key mapping this way? Or any way to get one of the key remapping applications to work correctly?

Thanks,
Brian

Interface issues with sharing

I already turned off both Global and Local sharing options in the VM configuration, but it still keeps prompting me every time I drag and drop. And even though I click "Do not show this message again" and then click No, it still keeps prompting me. This is really annoying. In my opinion, there should be no need for this prompt at all. Parallels should simply use the settings from the VM configuration screen. If the options have already been disabled in the configuration, then Parallels should not keep nagging the user.

* The difference between Global and Local sharing are:
**Global Sharing - shares the whole Mac filesystem.
**Local Sharing - shares only your Home folder(a nice enhancement request we had received from beta testers.)
I had to read the Help file in order to find out the meaning of these choices. Why don't you just display this information right in the interface? So instead of just Global and Local, the choices should be displayed as:

__ Global Sharing (shares the whole Mac filesystem)

__ Local Sharing (shares only your Home folder)

Additional details and download information is available on this page: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/beta_testing/

PLEASE REMEMBER: this is Release Candidate software. While this build gives you the rough understanding of the final set of features to be available in Final Release later on, it is still a “Candidate” and thus is still not recommended for production use. Do backup your virtual machines before trying them with this build.

This build provides several very important fixes to the problems found in previous Betas and Release Candidates:

* Windows Vista Upgrade support added. If you’re planning to upgrade your Windows XP installation to Vista, shut down your guest OS and go to Actions->Prepare Windows Vista Upgrade… menu item. Parallels Desktop will tune your Virtual Machine and start it. All you need to do is to wait till Windows XP is loaded, insert Windows Vista CD and start the upgrade.

* Global Sharing option is now disabled by default. We believe the feature has received enough testing already. From now on, you make the decision to enable real drag-and-drop or not. The new behavior is :
* On your first drag and drop attempt you will be prompted to choose whether you’d like to enable Global/Local sharing or just copy the file to Windows.
* The difference between Global and Local sharing are:
**Global Sharing - shares the whole Mac filesystem.
**Local Sharing - shares only your Home folder(a nice enhancement request we had received from beta testers.)
NOTE! Global sharing is forcibly disabled for all existing RC1 and RC2 installations upon RC3 upgrade.

* USB fixes. Both stability fixes and new devices support. Feel free to check your favorite device with RC3 and report to us if it still doesn’t work (beta@parallels.com).

* Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard” experimental support. The best virtualization solution for Mac is now available for early Leopard adopters.

* And many other fixes…

Once again I would like to encourage you to send your bug reports to beta@parallels.com mailbox. Be it non-working USB device, a description of your Boot Camp installation that fails to boot inside Parallels Desktop box or the specific application that is not handled correctly by Coherence – we are interested in any feedback that lets us improve Parallels Desktop and deliver the best one to you!

Best regards,
Tim and the Parallels Team
It works for the first time for my bootcamp partition. Thanks, but there are still few minor issues with USB release, it stuck on Mac and can get it work on Windows, somehow it was working fine on previous version though, it seemed rolled back.. Also there are software issues, I had to reinstall Anti-Virus software to get it work on PC, then when I naively boot in XP, it had the same issue, Anti-Virus software wasn't linked to my firewall setting. I guess it's got to do with overlaying 'profile'??? Hope you guys aware the issues and releasing the patch soon.. Great works...

No video in 3170
Just upgraded from 1970 to 3170. Looks like I should have crossed my fingers. Seems like the Win XP VM boots, but the VM screen is black. Any one else have this issue?

Edit:
Found the fix here:

Need to boot into safe mode and install 3170 tools

Still bluescreen with W2K and Canon iP3000 USB printer
Having used it a couple of days now, I indeed consider RC3 near production quality (at least for what I consider "production use" :) ). Thanks to the developers!

However, RC3 still suffers from a bug that I'm watching since my first trial of Parallels Desktop (pre-1970): I get a bluescreen whenever I connect a Canon iP3000 USB printer to a Windows 2000 VM. It would be great if a fix for this issue would make it into the final release!

3170 solved my problems! Operating with multi-boot
When I had installed XP in Bootcamp initially, the install had crapped out. I did a reinstall and apparently created a multi-boot XP istall with only one option. However my windows folder was now called windows.0 with all the subsequent registry entries etc. Doh.

The 3 previous RCs couldn't handle this and I was getting one of two errors. :(

Oh and with RC3 I didn't have to activate my already activiated XP boot camp install!

:D Thanks Parallels for continuing to plug away: I've just purchased my copy and look forward to the official release of RC3

I really have to say this clearly. I have persisted with this bug ridden junk software since it was first released. I have had many problems and I never get responses from Parallels when sending requests for technical advice. I have build 1970 and it refuses to allow any kind of usb storage device connections or the connection of my pda. I always get 'being used by some other application notices'. Then I tried to upgrade to 3070 beta and just get a black screen. Oh pleeze! This software is unmitigated garbage.

Maybe you should just do a little bit of research first. Most USB issues have been fixed since 1907, and the sollution to your black screen problem can be found here:

Good luck!

Have the same problem with build 1980. Parallels does not accept any usb drive, constantly displaying the "... is used by another process ... wait 5-10 seconds ..." message.

I did do some research. Booting the new 3186 in safe mode gets nowhere either as it hangs on a driver. My point is still valid. It is amazing that this junk software is so meekly accepted by so many people when it clearly does NOT work for more than a few customers. Why should we tolerate this kind of bug ridden software? If Parallels would bother to respond to my calls for help on this I could start a conversation to find a solution. They do not. So what happens to those like me who simply cannot get this software to install? Should we meekly give up and just say that was a nice experiment? Or should the Parallels team actually bother to do something about this?

Numlock
I'm using beta 3170 with a keyboard that doesn't have the PC-style numlock button and I find that my parallels sessions of Vista don't remember the numlock setting. Is there a way (either in Vista or in Parallels) to force NumLock to be turned on? Right now I use the handicapped On-Screen Keyboard in vista to turn on numlock each time.

There have been MANY reports here that the clear key (if you have one) performs the numlock function. Search is your friend.

Since the newer Apple USB keyboards do not have a numlock light, I have requested many times to put a numlock indicator in the Parallels status bar.
