    Hi,

I am using the latest Version of Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac (Build 5.0.9308 - 21.Dec 2009) on a MacBook Pro 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 8GB running Snow Leopard (Version 10.6.2).
I am running a virtual Machine with Windows XP (latest Service Packs and Updates). This machine was used for about 3-4 Weeks without reboot, just standy mode. Now I need to update security patches which needs to reboot the machine.
After reboot the machine does not start, the BIOS message show that it tries to start from IDE0, skips it and starts again and again... I think that the Master Boot Record (MBR) was crashed (i dont know why).
As I have a Backup of my machine, i can use it until the next reboot.
Now the question: what can I do to fix the MBR?
Or is there another Idea what is wrong with my machine? Can I use some parallels Tool to fix this problem?
    Thanks a lot!
    Alex

In the meanwhile I have installed Version 5.0.9310, Revision 546799 (as told by support) the only change is, that my license key is no longer accepted...
I tried (from XP Recover Console): chkdsk /r, fixboot c:, fixmbr with no success.
chkdsk and fixmbr told me, that there was a correction done, but the virtual machine does not boot...

My suspicion: the tools do not change the virtual disk? Is it possible, that under Recovery console the changes are not written persistently? Some kind of undo disk settings wrong in my installation?
Is there a tool to use / copy the MBR from another machine?

    Thanks a lot for answers...

I have a similiar problem. After installing some updates (incl. Paralles-Tools) in the XP-VM the VM went down for a reboot. Now the VM doesn't start anymore ("Fehler beim Lesen des Datenträgers"). I have no Backup an I need some of the files stored in this VM. Is it possible to mount the not-working VM into another (working) one?

I am sure, that this is no Windows Problem, but a Parallels Problem.
The changes made by the windows Tools are not persisted.
Or the boot process does not work because of failure in checking the hardware (perhaps the video card?)
It would be great if there would be a tool...
BTW: my problem concerning the license key is solved: i had a version on different locale. The german package now works for me...
