    Hi all,

I am trying to set up a LAN connection with my macbook so that I can send data from XP on parallels to OSX. I am doing this by using a program called Max/MSP and a java 'netsend' feature in that program.

I've been able to get the connection going just fine as long as my wireless router in my home is connected to the internet. The 'netsend' object on the XP side sends data to the IP address that has been assigned to the macbook (which I find in OSX's network preferences), and the 'netsend' object on the OSX side receives the data at that same specified IP address. So as I understand it, data is going from XP, through parallels, out OSX, to the router, and then back into OSX again.

The problem is that I need to be able to have this connection work without the router being connected to the internet, but merely acting as a routing point to direct the data back to OSX. (This is because I need to use the setup in places that might not have internet access.)

A friend of mine suggested that a Persistent Lan Connection might be what I need. I thought it might have to do with "Host Only/Shared Neworking" settings, but so far my trial and error has not achieved success.

Can someone suggest what I might want to look into to get this set up running? I know it's a bit complicated but if anyone can offer some advice I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

    Anyone?

Does anyone have a suggestion for how I can accomplish this? Just need to have XP in parallels be able to network to OSX host platform and send data over the connection. (I'm using a UDP rather than TCP connection if that makes a difference.)

    Thanks again!

You definitely need to use SharedNetworking. To connect to MacOS from Guest the ip-address 10.211.55.2 should be used. Try to ping it from VirtualMachine (execute cmd.exe and type "ping 10.211.55.2")

Elric! Thank you very very much. This was exactly what i needed to do, much simpler than I'd thought. It took a bit of troubleshooting still, but in the end all I had to do was set up parallels as "Shared Networking", enable DHCP, and restart parallels. I verified the IP address you indicated as being active by checking OSX's network settings and pinging the IP from XP's cmd.exe window. Then when I went to use the java object in Max/MSP I entered the IP address you indicated on both sides (OSX and XP) and sent some triggers, and boom! Data sent from PC to Mac.

This is very very interesting because it begins to lay the groundwork for sharing of MIDI and possibly even Audio between Mac and PC, something which a lot of audio people are looking for due to some applications and tools being exclusive to either OS.

    VERY COOL.

    Thank you again!
