Windows XP Won't Boot under Bootcamp; OK Under Parallels

Starting up my Imac in alt - Bootcamp Mode produces either an immediate reboot or the black "apology" screen where one has choice between normal windows start or safemode, etc. Choosing any of those produces a reboot with same result. Starting Mac normally, then starting Parallels, and starting Windows XP via Parallels works OK. MY VM uses the Bootcamp partitition, so I'm at a loss why I can start Windows in Parallels and not directly from Bootcamp.
