I'm installing Parallels on a user's mac for the first time. It's version 2 and as I always do I installed it as the Admin user, installed Windows etc.

I then went and created the account on the mac for the final user. When I logged out of the Admin user account and into the ultimate user's account I went to start up Parallels. I was surprised to see that it wanted me to go through the whole setup procedure again.

Is there not a way to avoid this by copying certain files from the admin user account? It's not like there are going to be more than one licensed user of the software.

    Thanks
    Sean

The reason this happens is due to the default location of the VM images, they reside in the users home folder, within the documents folder, which is not accessable by other users.

To avoid this move the folder to a shared location on the machine, ie "shared" and tell parallels to look for the image in that location, under preferences.

    I have several suggestions
1.I suggest you to deploy software using Apple Remote Desktop - it is the best way in mass deployment.
    2. There is no need to go through whole process, if you created Virtual machine (or copied it with appropriate permissions) to /Users/Shared/Parallels

Thanks for the advice guys but I am still having issues:

I logged back in as Admin and moved the Parallels folder from Documents to the 'Shared' folder. I also copied the two Preferences files from the Admin account as well.

Back in the user account I copied the Preferences files and fired up Parallels. Unfortunately it still is asking to install Windows with the setup assistant and I cannot get to Preferences in Parallels to change the path. If I cancel the setup assistant, it conveniently quits the application. Not very helpful.

The pref files are causing the issue, as they are set up looking in the original location for the image, it's not there as you have moved it to the shared location,so resumes the install process.

Bin them from the non admin account you have moved them to, only move the Parallels Folder from admin/documents to the shared location.

    regards

    Hi Perry,
no luck with that I'm afraid. I trashed the user's prefs as you said. Copied the Parallels folder to his documents folder. Emptied the trash and fired up Parallels. It came up with the setup assistant again.

Now I remember why I use Fusion at home ;-))

Any other ideas? There's clearly some other files somewhere other than the two prefs files.

Make sure you only have the xxxx.hhd file in the microsoft xxx folder that resides in the Parallels folder that you have moved to the shared location. Let Parallels recreate the other when you start it up.

    Perry,
thanks for your continued help. I managed to get it working, I redid the permissions on the folder in 'Shared' then I tried opening the .psv file and that seemed to do the trick. Then I could update my preferences. The floppy config broke but that was easy to repair.

    Thanks for all your help.
