Has anyone else hitting problems with running PCLinuxOS 2007 under Parallels 3.0 Build 5160 in the last few days? - particularly to do with X11 not starting up

I had a PCLinuxOS installation which has been working quite nicely for about a month. I haven't updated Parallels recently - but I think there were a series of updates to PCL about 4 days ago. Now I find the X11 system won't start up. It tries to - but then collapses back to the command line. The symptoms are different to The current Ubuntu 7.10 problems - there only seems to be one attempt to start up and I can't see any useful diagnostics.

I went to the command line and swapped the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for the original default PCL one - and lo, X11 started properly - but of course, the Parallels tools were not installed. Anyway, I managed to extract some vital data files from the PCL VM, but when I then tried to reinstall the Parallels Tools, X11 in the PCL VM stopped working again. So it looks like there is something in the latest updates to PCL that disagrees with the Parallels Tools.

I love Parallels Desktop when it is working - pure magic - but it is so fragile!

What does your /var/log/xorg.log (or something similar) show after attempting to run with the non-working xorg.conf?

Sorry - I was running out of disk space so I deleted non-functioning VM images including PCL2007. So right now I can't answer your question. I will see if I can recreate the VM and will get back to you if I can.

    Thanks for replying

Re Midas's request for log info:

OK - I have now tried to reinstall PCLinuxOS 2007 and still get a problem.
I can run PCL as a live CD with no serious problems.
I can use the live CD to install PCL and still no major problems.

The problem starts when you then install the Parallels Tools. That installation appears to go OK but when X11 restarts, the system hangs with a blank screen. (this is slightly different to what happened back in Oct). If you then force a reboot by resetting the VM, the reboot appears to go OK to the point when X11 would normally start up - again the system hangs with a blank screen.

Restoring the original /etc/X11/xorg.conf brings the system back to life again - but of course with no Parallels Tools.

    The /var/log/Xorg.0.log file says:

It seems our bug. We have the same problem with Ubuntu 6.06 and installed Parallels Tools. Please provide me with xorg.conf with installed Parallels Tools from 5582 Parallels Desktop version.

PCLinux - Parallel Tools - Networking

Like the other guy in this forum, I had the same result when trying to add Parallels Tools. Is there any way, then to configure PCLinux to use my wireless network WITHOUT the Parallel Tools? I gave it the college try, but with no results.

I'm having the exact same problem with Debian. Is there a fix for this yet?

    I'm using build 5584

Well I have just tried the new release of Parallels Workstation (Build 5600) on my old installation of PC LinuxOS 2007 and there seems to be no improvement. The installation works OK, provided that you don't try and install the Parallels Tools - so no automatic window resizing and you have to press ctrl+alt to release the cursor from the parallels window.

When you install the parallels tools and restart the X server, the window/screen goes black and that is the end of that. I think that that was what happened with the previous build.

For a completely authoritative test, I ought to try a fresh install of PCLinuxOS - but I am not sure I can be bothered. At the moment, if I want to use a Linux, I use Ubuntu 7.10 which seems to work OK with Parallels Tools.

I would urge Parallels to put more effort into better support for Linux, rather than lovingly polishing the Windows support. I do use Windows - but only when I have to. I use Linux for fun and education.

    Ref pclinuxos-2007

I can boot OK directly from the CD, but when I try and install it in parallells, it aborts.

    Any ideas ?

OK - done that - it ow boots in parallels, but when I select install, go through setting up the partitions and go to next, then done, it shows me checked partitions to format and then nothing else happens.

    I must be missing something.

    Pclinuxos is a livecd.

when its up and running at the desktop, I select install, go through installation and it completes the install, lets me add the boot to the virtual and I am back at the desktop, so as it is a livecd, I shut it down and it ejects the CD

Wen i exit and restart parallels and select pclinuxos, it sits at the shutdown screen and can't find the boot ??

    What am i missing ?

    Its the same.

The pclinuxos-2007 from the website is a livecd with a install to hard drive icon on the desktop. ordinarily, after the install is finished, you are back at the livecd desktop and have to shutdown/reboot so the livecd is ejected and when you next boot or reboot, it launches from the hard disk instead
