I kind of want to upgrade from XP to Vista, but definitely don't want to pay for the Business or Ultimate versions. I just wanted the Home Basic or maybe the Home Premium version. But the license agreement for both Home versions says:

"USE WITH VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGIES. You may not use the software installed on the licensed device within a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system."

Does anyone know if Vista Home is actually prevented from running on Parallels or if it's sort of a trust-based system? In other words, can I go ahead and install it anyway and just hope I don't get caught and will it still work? Or is there some kind of check inside Windows that will stop me?

    Thanks!

Microsoft has recently changed its mind and now allows running Vista Home and Home Premium in VM, you can read more details here.
So there shouldn't be any problems installing and if there will be - you are safe to contact Microsoft on this :)
