Is there a way to sort (or change) the order of the machines that show up in the "Parallels Virtual Machines" window (you get this when you hit CMD-1).

And... This "window" should be named "Virtual Machines Directory" to match the command you invoke to see it. I'm going to open that one with support... :)

It's possible to rearrange virtual machines by removing/adding them -- choose a virtual machine, click File-> Remove-> Remove from the list or File -> Open -> choose needed virtual machine

So I assume from your rather careful wording that theres no way to insert machines into a specific place in the list without deleting everything after the place I wanted it inserted. And if I only want to swap a couple machines, I have to delete, manually reorder, and manually reinsert them.

Can you please open an enhancement request to make the list useable?

Right now you can change order by editing file
    /Library/Preferences/Parallels/vmdirectorylist.desktop.xml
Just change sections in xml file
