    I can't get parallels 4 to start. When I start I get the above error. Below is log file from the install which shows a bus error. I can run version 3 with no problems. Restarting doesn't solve the problem.

    I am attempting to start Parallels Desktop automatically at login, but this exact error occurs every time (Unable to connect to Parallels Service). When starting Parallels Desktop at other times, it runs fine.

    I have submitted problem report #22259

    Just to clarify, are you adding Parallels Desktop from /Applications or from /Applications/Parallels?

    I was adding "Parallels Desktop" from Applications. I just tried doing it again, and this time I didn't receive that error (note: I reproduced the error probably 5 out of 5 attempts while trying to work around it, and as far as I know this last time I didn't do anything special, it just started working magically.).

    Hopefully my problem has gone away.

    I can't get the program to run so I can't report a problem or do an about. When I click on "send problem report", the program just quits. Parallels-Desktop-4.0.3540.209168.dmg is the name of install image I've been using. I've tried shutting off the firewall and that doesn't do anything. I've reinstalled multiple times. I've done a total removal and install based on the link:

    http://kb.parallels.com/en/5714

    I've run disk utility to fix permissions. The full error message when I start the program is:

    Unable to connect to Parallels Service

    Make sure that prl_disp_service is running and check your firewall settings. If the problem persists, contact Paralles support team for assistance.

    The are two buttons: Send Problem Report and OK. Clicking either button just causes the program to quit.

    Based on this I did a search of prl_disp_service and ran the following command:

    iBob% sudo /Library/Parallels/Parallels\ Service.app/Contents/MacOS/prl_disp_service -e --logfile /var/log/prl_disp_service_server.log --pidfile /var/run/prl_disp_service.pid &

    [1] + bus error sudo /Library/Parallels/Parallels\ Service.app/Contents/MacOS/prl_disp_servic

    Here are the contents of /var/log/prl_disp_service_server.log:

    I just reinstalled 4, and it downloaded a new version. I get the same error. I haven't tried installing it on a different computer on the same network.

    This has just happened to me as well. Right in the middle of my work day!

    I had my CentOS virtual machine running and I launched my Windows XP virtual machine. Somehow it never really started. I was away from my computer for a few minutes and when I came back the virtual machine screen (for Windows XP) was black. I clicked "Stop", then I properly shut down my CentOS vm (was still working fine).

    I proceeded to reboot my Macbook Pro (it has 4Gb of RAM, I run Mac OS X, CentOS and Windows on it all the time) and upon rebooting, Parallels will not launch again.

    As described by jcodd, I get the "cannot connect to service" error and clicking "send error report" just closes Parallels.

    Help!

    Thanks.

    Hi John,

    Updating to 3810 solved the problem for me. I was lucky that I saw the new build before starting to clean uninstall / re-install and try more draconian ways of fixing the problem.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

    Please, make sure you have no simlink in your /Users/Shared folder which may redirect the Parallels folder to another location.
    If you have one, please, remove it and restart Parallels Desktop.

    You can use the following Terminal commands (Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal):

    $ cd /Users/Shared
    $ mkdir SyncLocation
    $ mv Parallels /Users/Shared/SyncLocation/Parallels
    $ ln -s /Users/Shared/SyncLocation/Parallels/Users/Shared/Parallels

    Restart your Mac and launch Parallels Desktop.

    Thank you very much. This solution worked perfectly. I had a link from /Users/Shared/Parallels to an external drive and I just removed the link and accessed the disk image directly on the external drive.

    Same problem here

    I having the exact same problem with build 3810, setting the symlink didn't change a thing, nor rebooting nor desintalling/reinstalling Parallels Desktop with reboot.

    Using build 3810 with a XP2 BootCamp VM, Mac OS X 10.5.6 on a Mac Pro.

    I am stuck with this problem...
    also getting:
    "Make sure that prl_disp_service is running or check your firewall settings. If the problem persists, contact the Parallels support team for assistance."

    I checked the firewall, symlinks, etc... as described in the KB:
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/5791

    I am running build 3810. The only strange thing I did is that I installed first a localized version of Parallels, then unistalled it and installed a different version. I suspect that the uninstaller does not remove everything (I had the various options checked though).

    Found this in system.log:

    Different User Names

    I was able to produce this problem as well. I created a username Studio, for when I use my Mac to play live, I don't want all of the processes to run. When logging in to Studio, and back into my Home username where Paralelles resides, it creates this error.

    Sorry, no solutions, but if the engineers are reading this, it may help resolve the issue.

    I was running fine, until I created another user account and logged in to it. When going back to the my parallels account, it creates the error.

    Not sure if it has something to do with permissions, or the fact that my other username has Admin rights as well.

    Either way...I hope a fix comes soon!

    My temporary fix for this is to download Parallels from the website and install it again! It seems to refresh everything and all of my settings work and I am back up and running. The only flaw is that the Parallells virtual hardrive does not mount on the desktop anymore :(

    Unable to connect to Parallels Service after Time Machine restore

    hi!

    here is what made this error for me:

    head start info:
    the first created virtual machine in parallels desktop was windows xp, which was stored on my mac hd in default location /Users/user/Documents/Parallels/... after that i created a win 7 virtual machine, which was stored on my external usb hd. i was using parallels desktop normaly.

    later:
    1. i restored my mac os 10.5.7 from a time machine backup; the >>backup did NOT include<< virtual machines from /Users/user/Documents/Parallels/*
    2. after that i applied the mac os x 10.5.8 update.
    3. when wanted to start parallels desktop and i got the error message: "Unable to connect to Parallels Service.
    Make sure that prl_disp_service is running or check your firewall settings. If the problem persists, contact the Parallels support team for assistance"

    i installed parallels again, then uninstalled parallels using appzapper & installed again. still not working. deleted /Users/user/Documents/Parallels folder and /Users/user/Shared/Parallels folder; reinstalled; not working.

    i followed the steps on these sites:
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/5772
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/5791
    ... and none of the solutions worked for me.

    i was looking in my mac's System preferences > Network after every reinstall. no Parallels network services were created.
    maybe the installer does not work well on mac os x 10.5.8?

    is there a way to completely reset all parallels settings, so i can try to start my win 7 virtual machine from external usb disk, as mentioned. if i double click the win 7.pvm, i get the same error.

    hope this info helps you with this error message.

    Parallels 3 worked Parallels 4 says "Unable to connect to Parallels Service."

    I'm running Parallels 3 on 10.5.8 and in anticipation of installing Snow Leopard, I'm trying to update to Parallels 4. After the install i attempted to start Parallels Desktop and got "the message." Prior to the upgrade, Parallels 3 had been running just fine -- though it was an older version, I was unable to get the later updates to install (the disk images would not mount IIRC).

    I've checked /etc/hosts and tried removing the alias that points /Users/Shared to another volume and replacing it with a folder. Removed the network configuration per the instructions in the KB. No luck at all.

    Anybody have any ideas about what to try next?

    Thanks, Doug
