Thanks for the tip - I had already done this, and really didn't notice any difference. I suspect WinXP had already had time to do it on its own.

Already did, John, and other than telling me all the tips posted in the KB, they were unable to suggest anything else that would improve performance. I think this is a case where my expectations (based on the "50% faster" claim for PD4) were higher than the reality (about the same or maybe slightly faster than PD3).

Fixed it!

All I did was go into the device manager and uninstall the driver for both processors (dual-core machine). Windows then installed new drivers for both cores and the CPU went back down to normal.

Good luck to the rest of you :)

Good news!
Can you describe which drivers you uninstalled?
And did they get reinstalled automatically on reboot of the VM?

He told you. In the device manager is one item per processor. Right click on that and select uninstall. Reboot.

To clarify: The question for friskythecat is, within the Device Manager, under "System Devices",
I see "Parallels paravirtualization driver" and "Parallels Tool Device".
Am I looking in the right place, and at the right drivers, or is it some other driver that should be uninstalled
or updated, such as the Intel CPU driver under "Processors"? There's no yellow triangle in sight.

prl_vm_app has been OK lately, but sometimes hogs CPU dramatically, so saith the Activity Monitor.

People are talking about the one under Processors. I haven't done because I have had no yellow triangles and because the December build fixed my problems. It can't hurt to try though.

Using XP SP2 and MBP 17" and the prl_vm_app process pegs out > 100% when I load a project in Visual Studio 2003. However, Windows activities are <5%. I have tried a couple other programs and VS 2003 seems to be the only one causing the problem. I am going to install Office 2007 and see if it happens using it.

prl_vm_app consuming more than 100% cpu kills system on parallesl 5

prl_vm_app consuming more than 100% cpu kills system on parallesl 5. this has left my entire system unusable and I am not sure what Parallels is doing about it.

I also have a support tick open with parallels.

Parallesl, lets do something about this issue.

Parallels must refund the money for version 5, as simple as that

Same thing in V5 for me

MacBook Pro Core 2 duo, 4GB. This was a fresh install, not an upgrade of both Parallels and WinXP. It takes about a halt hour for the CPU to get soaked up.

Can't believe Parallels still can't solve this issue

I can't believe this issue has been going on since Parallels 4, the bottom line is people are forking out money for Parallels 5 with known issues and the Parallels team is doing nothing here to let us know they're trying to work out the problem. You don't release a major update and charge for it if problems still exist, it's bad business plain and simple.

prl_vm_app 100% CPU

7-10% per CPU in use on idle system

iMac i7 (new)
Parallels (just installed)
Windows 7 installed painlessly
Optimization 1 : Enabled Hypervisor, AutoCompress, Tune for Windows Speed, Mac OS X Apps, Longer battery life
Optimization 2 : disable Hypervisor, AutoCompress, Tune for Windows Speed, Virtual Machine, Better performance
Both optimization settings do not change the CPU usage on the Mac.
Windows Task Manager: 99 % system idle
Mac Activity Monitor: prl_vm_app: 72% out of a max of 800%

I have tried it from 1 CPU to 8 CPUs and the problem scales up with each CPU I add on

attached is the results of prl_perf_ctl -a -l 10
