I have a Dell 2407WFP LCD monitor. I installed Fedora Core 5 in a VM tonight, and the native resolutions using the default graphics card and monitor settings were 800 x 640 and 640 x 480, IIRC. I went into the monitor settings in system administration and changed the monitor type to match the correct Dell model, and was then able to increase my resolution.

However, checking in the screen resolution tool shows it thinks my video is running at 61 Hz, while OS X thinks it is running at 60 Hz. Am I doing bad things to my monitor by not using the default generic monitor settings in Fedora since this thing is running in a VM and not really accessing the video hardware?

No, you should be fine. Worry not.

    I've seen 60Hz as:

    59.9
    60
    60.1
    60.5
    61

...in various OSs and configs. My Dell 2005FPW sees 'em all as 60 without a problem. I definitely wouldn't worry about it.
