    Dear Parallels Community,

We need your support in resolving a very nasty problem. The info collected in this thread should show us whether we have fixed all possible kernel panic conditions or not and will let us get rid of them in the closest public version of Parallels Desktop for Mac.

We really appreciate your help here and will continue to work hardly to bring you the best product.

Please, provide us the following info on your Panics:

    0. Short description of Panic condition (was it at VM power on, normal guest system work, or guest system software reboot, etc.). Is it possible to reproduce this Panic? Do you see any similarities between Panic conditions you observe?

    1. Your Panic log.
    - Open Macintosh HD->Applications->Utilities->System Profiler
    - In the left tab find the "Software" group and select "Logs"
    - In the right tab find the "panic.log"
    - Save its contents to some text file and attach it to your post on the forum or just copy-paste to your post.

    2. Your Mac memory size and guest OS memory amount.
2.1. Do you limit memory size to some value by "maxmem=option"?

    3. Your CPU count.

    4. Your Mac model.

    5. (optional) Your system version (ex. 10.4.7:8J2135a )

    6. (optional) Your kernel version (ex. Darwin 8.7.1)

If you feel ready to make some additional testing:

    0. NOTE: Make sure to backup all important data on your Mac - Panics can damage your unsaved data and lead to data loss.

    1. Does KP happen with VT-x option disabled ? (you can disable it by clicking Edit->Options and browsing to VM flags tab)

    2. Does KP happen with "maxmem=2048" boot loader option ?

    3. Does KP happed with "cpus=1" boot loader option ?

    Thank you in advance,
    Parallels Team.

    0. Short description of Panic :
When setting up my VMs, it would happen when formatting NTFS or when the VM rebooted for the next step of the install. Now that they are setup, it happens only on VM start (and not always)

Well, thats interesting. Patrick is the only one posting so far with the newer build of 10.4.7, and he's not crashing in vmmain or the hypervisor like the rest of us. He's crashing in the nVidia drivers.

    0. Short description of Panic condition (was it at VM power on, normal guest system work, or guest system software reboot, etc.). Is it possible to reproduce this Panic? Do you see any similarities between Panic conditions you observe?

VM power on. Typically, if I reboot the Mac, then start Parallels I'll get my WinXP Pro VM to start and run fine. If I shut down Parallels and then, later, start Parallels again, I will definitely get a KP. The KP occurs at various times: right when I hit the VM power on, after Windows has loaded, and right when the Windows "load chime" occurs.

    1. Your Panic log.

    2. Your Mac memory size and guest OS memory amount.
3 Ghz RAM, 512 MB to guest OS

2.1. Do you limit memory size to some value by "maxmem=option"
    No.

    3. Your CPU count.
    Two

    4. Your Mac model.
    Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz

    5. (optional) Your system version (ex. 10.4.7:8J2135a )
    10.4.7 Build 8K1079

    6. (optional) Your kernel version (ex. Darwin 8.7.1)
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.7.2

    TEST RESULTS

    1. Does KP happen with VT-x option disabled ? (you can disable it by clicking Edit->Options and browsing to VM flags tab)
    YES.

    2. Does KP happen with "maxmem=2048" boot loader option ?
    NO.
But I get the "VT-x is disabled" message even though it is checked "on" in Options. I set boot args, rebooted the Mac, started Parallels, started WinXP Pro, installed Parallels tools, rebooted WinXP, quit XP, quit Parallels, restarted Parallels, restarted Win XP Pro with 0 KPs so far.

    3. Does KP happed with "cpus=1" boot loader option ?
I'm not going to try, as step 2 seems to have sorted out my problems for now.

    0. Short description of Panic condition
was it at VM power on?
    Yes

Do you see any similarities between Panic conditions you observe?
Yes, KPs when run anytime after computer has slept. When run before sleep, get VT-X is disabled message, then runs slowly. After sleep, don't get VT-X disabled message, but KPs.

    iMac kernel panic

    0. Short description of Panic condition (was it at VM power on, normal guest system work, or guest system software reboot, etc.).

Installed Parallels from CD, attempted to create Windows XP VM. Once VM created, all the options under "Devices" were greyed out, and the panic happend at VM power on.

Is it possible to reproduce this Panic? Do you see any similarities between Panic conditions you observe?

With Parallels installed from CD, panic happened every time I attempted to power on VM. Once I installed build 1884, everything worked fine.

    1. Your Panic log.

    See attached RTF file.

    2. Your Mac memory size and guest OS memory amount.

1 GB, 256 MB reserved for XP VM.

2.1. Do you limit memory size to some value by "maxmem=option"?

    No.

    3. Your CPU count.

2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.

    4. Your Mac model.

    iMac

    5. (optional) Your system version (ex. 10.4.7:8J2135a )

    Mac OS X 10.4.7 (8K1106)

    6. (optional) Your kernel version (ex. Darwin 8.7.1)

    Darwin 8.7.3

If you feel ready to make some additional testing:

    0. NOTE: Make sure to backup all important data on your Mac - Panics can damage your unsaved data and lead to data loss.

    1. Does KP happen with VT-x option disabled ? (you can disable it by clicking Edit->Options and browsing to VM flags tab)

Yes, with original build (not with build 1884).

    2. Does KP happen with "maxmem=2048" boot loader option ?

    Unknown.

    3. Does KP happed with "cpus=1" boot loader option ?

    Unknown.

MacPro (2) 3G processors with 4G Ram: Model: MacPro1,1 I currently am NOT limiting memory: This is reproducable and it happens when I either try to open a VM copied from my MBP or when I try to create a NEW VM.

    0: Short Description:

If I install Desktop following a normal boot, the KP occurs before the install completes (I believe when the install starts Desktop). A KP occurs at bootup at the time "Startup" programs are started. I have to boot in "safe mode" and uninstall to be able to boot into normal mode.

If I install Destop following a "safe mode" boot, the install completes and I can start Desktop, but subsequent normal boots result in a KP as above.

    Here we go:

    1. Your Panic log.

    2. Your Mac memory size and guest OS memory amount.
4 Gig actual, 1 Gig for guest OS

2.1. Do you limit memory size to some value by "maxmem=option"?
Have tried 3.5 and 2 gigs

    3. Your CPU count.
    Dual 3 GHz Xeons

    4. Your Mac model.
    MacPro1,1

    5. (optional) Your system version (ex. 10.4.7:8J2135a )
    10.4.7:8K1079

    6. (optional) Your kernel version (ex. Darwin 8.7.1)
    Darwin 8.7.2

If you feel ready to make some additional testing:

    0. NOTE: Make sure to backup all important data on your Mac - Panics can damage your unsaved data and lead to data loss.

    1. Does KP happen with VT-x option disabled ? (you can disable it by clicking Edit->Options and browsing to VM flags tab)
    Yes...

    2. Does KP happen with "maxmem=2048" boot loader option ?
    No...

    3. Does KP happed with "cpus=1" boot loader option ?
    Not tested...

Hope to see a fix soon so I can use at least 3.5 G of my RAM instead of 2G. Thanks,

    J^2
