Sorry guys for my probably stupid thread but i am a new user and i have 3 main doubts that i d like you to help me with: 1) how do i install a typical .exe file on the windows xp vm? (how do i setup a program on the windows guest os from the osx) 2) do i need to update the virtual windows xp like if it was the only OS? (www.windowsupdate.com and all that stuff?) 3) can i use the guest xp preventing it to access the internet so that i can use it just to run burning software and office xp? THANKS VERY MUCH to all the ones that will help me to understand! Ric
Ricardo, here are my answers: 1) The CDROM is available and you can load programs that way. Or if you choose to enable networking you can transfer them in and run the setup programs. Almost exactly the same options you when running windows. 2) You only need to do the update if you want to. No requirement however Parallels is targeting the functionality at Windows XP SP2 so you need at leas that much. The rest of it is your choice. 3) Absolutely you can disable networking. In the settings for the VM just disable the network adapter and when you boot the VM windows will come up without a network adapter installed. Additional comments on #3. Parallels runs the VM (XP) so close to real windows that I would suggest you keep networking enabled and treat it like a real machine. If you are worried about viruses and stuff, then you can EASILY copy the VM and save off the HDD so that if some action you perform corrupts your machine you just exit the VM and restore the old one. You could also install all the favorite Windows anti-virus stuff too if you need to. I use my XP/VM for development work so I'm very careful where I go on the internet and I back the VM up regularly so I can go back to known states. Mark
thanks!!! thank that was enlightening! I think i will install this on my winxp: 1) antivirus + firewall 2) clone dvd + dvd region free (haha) 3) ... idk what else. My doubt is that installing xp will bring me the problems of xp. I rather not have all those issues. I wanna use my mac for all the apps and just use xp to have my dvd burnt. How can i also prevent xp from sucking all the resources of my mac? i think that if i found an safe equivalent of (clone dvd + region free + css) i wouldn't need the xp at all! If you have any advice on this..it's welcome!! Ric
I'm not sure how well DVD burning works in Parallels. Have you looked at MacTheRipper for ripping DVDs and DVD2oneX2 for writing them? I just don't know if doing burning in XP under Parallels is a great idea or not. I've never tried.
Well i could use also MacTheRipper and Popcorn 2 hehe..i have them both on a cd just need to install them..but i thought that the joint -clone dvd + region free css- is a cutting edge solution to burn all the "obstacles" haha...for dvd copying. How does dvd/cd burning work on parallels..?mmm..this seems a good thing to find out. what d o you know about this? (consider i have the superdrive on my macbook) Ric
