Parallels hangs

I have reported this problem twice to Parallels without receiving a response. Am I the only one experiencing this? I can't believe this is the only application in the world that causes this to happen. See below:

Have you found and fixed any bugs in your code that can cause the entire Parallels program to hang when using the keyboard instead of the mouse to trigger commands in Windows programs running inside it?
Or am I the only one experiencing this?

I'm having a serious problem that makes Parallels almost useless to me. In certain situations, sometimes several times a day when doing an operation inside a Windows program, the program, Windows and Parallels totally locks up/freezes (spinning beachball) and eventually crashes. It's a miracle that the disk file has not been corrupted long ago.

Maybe this is a special case. It only happens in one program which you are not able to test because it requires its own Oracle database and not anyone can download it (we are developing it and it's only available to our customers). Of course it runs fine on a normal PC and also in Bootcamp. I also think the problem has only occurred when I'm using keyboard shortcuts to trigger actions or open windows inside the program. When using the mouse it seems to always work fine. So as long as I remember that everything is ok. But I'm a keyboard freak and that is very tedious plus I often forget and then, oops now it's going to crash again. This is not acceptable.

I don't know if there is a connection but there is also another problem with repeated keystrokes which also happens in other programs including Explorer. When I use enter to open a program it sometimes opens multiple copies of it.

 

Since the offending program is only available to you and your customers, then if your customers aren't experiencing the problem, yes, you are the only one, by definition.

Does the problem just crash Windows, or does it actually crash Parallels? If the former, it's possible that the specific configuration matters and that is why it doesn't crash in another environment. If the latter, Parallels may need your help in reproducing the problem, but what you've posted isn't much in the way of a problem description -- "My proprietary code doesn't work." doesn't give them much to go on.

 

Our customers are not experiencing this as they are not using Parallels. Everybody else is running it on a real PC. This never occurs on a real PC or using Bootcamp on a Mac. If it was I would not be asking Parallels about this.

It is not only Windows. Parallels hangs for several minutes and then crashes. I've sent several crash reports to Apple but I don't know if they forward them to Parallels.

When I asked if I was the only one I of course meant if somebody else was experiencing similar things in other programs. I find it hard to believe that we have made the only program capable of bringing down Parallels in this way. That would be a real achievement. ;-)

If so I realise that this is very hard to figure out and that is very frustrating. I have tried my best to describe the problem. I am happy to assist in any way I can to solve this. If Parallels has more questions for me I will answer them to the best of my ability but I haven't heard from them.

Is nobody else experiencing the repeated keystroke problem either? I think there may be a connection between the two.

 

I haven't seen any keyboard related problems however I use a limited number of control-keys and function keys.

I write software in Borland Delphi under Parallels and have to use alot of F9, Ctrl-F9, Ctrl-Shift S etc to control the compiler. I've never seen a problem either in the compiler or in the produced applications that run.

One question... How loaded up is your machine when the crash happens? I haven't had a true Parallels crash in a very long time (and I'm ignoring the recent problems I have with the curtain of death during Parallels startup)... Once Parallels is running it just seems to go regardless of the trash I do in windows.

My machine is 2gb RAM and I have 640MB allocated to Windows XP. Everything I want seems to run fine in that. But when Mac OS is loaded with a ton of other tasks I've seen the beachball a few times but several seconds later it pops back.

I wish I could get more RAM for my MBP and I would in an instant. I'd love to have 4gb in this thing.

Another quick question? What are you using for a keyboard? I use a Wireless Microsoft keyboard that plugs a USB adapter into my MBP when at work. That combination works but at times the keyboard/driver gets confused and thinks caps are all on or something stupid like that. Could it be a keyboard issue?

 

Interesting. We are using Delphi to program the application I'm having trouble with. I have had no trouble in Delphi or any other application as far as I can remember. Only in our own app.

I also have 2GB RAM and 604 MB is allocated to XP. I have the same set of programs open most of the time.

There are days when this doesn't happen and some days it happens all the time. I'm not 100% sure but it seems to me that the problem only happens when I use the keyboard instead of mouse. When I remember to use the mouse everything is fine! I just had a hang/crash and it happened when I used the keyboard shortcut Alt+3 to activate a tabsheet in one of the windows in the application. The app. is MDI which is not so common these days. Could that have something to do with it?

Come to think of it this application seems slower in Parallels than on a real PC. The wait cursor flickers a lot more. The program constantly reads different kinds of data from the database.
But the hang doesn't always occur when reading data.

I'm not having any speed issues in other programs. The total freeze and then crash is something very weird and it has nothing to do with a general slowdown of the VM. When that happens I just lean back and wait for Parallels to crash. I can hardly use the computer in the meantime.

I'm using a wireless (RF) keyboard from Logitech with a USB receiver.

Maybe I should explain the repeated keystroke problem better. It usually happens when I use a keystroke to open up another window. Then that same keystroke is sent (several times) to the newly opened window too. I can open a document from a list using the enter key and then up to 50 blank lines are inserted into the document after it is opened! Or I use enter to click a menu item which opens up a dialog box which has a default button which is automatically pressed because another enter is sent to it!

Since installing the latest update I have not had any problems with repeated keystrokes or any hangs/crashes. I'm still holding my breath a little bit but it looks like you have fixed it. Great work. The shared clipboard is also much more stable.
