I'm tying to install Norton antivirus and personal firewall in a Windows XP Pro system on my MacBook. The MacBook is running OS X 10.4.8.

The Norton software is supplied by my Broadband provider, BT Yahoo, and comes as a download from their site. I have it up and working on 2 native windows boxes, and I'm authorised to run it on up to 10 boxes.

I go through th download and install procedure. No problems. At the end of this I have to re-start Windows. An activation process begins on restart. At this point I get repeated "the followingh program has encountered an error and must terminate" dialogue boxes. Details of the error are as follows:

    szAppname - symvlsvc.exe
    szapp ver - 1.9.1.878
    szmodname - symlcnet.dll
    szmodver - 1.9.1.878
    offset - 000084a7

    symclsvc is a Norton module.

I've raised this as an issue with my ISP (support for the Norton products comes from them). They are sticking to the line that these products are not supported on a Mac. This does not seem to be a very sensible answer - after all, I'm running the products in Windows, not Mac OS.

Sometimes you have to tell a little lie to them and maybe get a hint. Look around the mac forum (or others) and see, but I think Norton and the firewall run o.k. under Parallels.

    Mac and Norton 2006

I have been using Norton Anti-Virus 2006 and on an other VM for the Mac F-secure. Both anti virus program are working well without any known issues. They both scan and update themselves appropriately. All though I have no idea why your installation is not working I offer this perspective to let you know at least some versions do work.

I will be 71 next birthday and need to economise
so when Norton came up for renewal as an expense on my old machine I opted out
(after 10 years on Mac and PC)

some other Silver Surfers told me about AVG
    go to http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
updated to 7.5 October 6 then 2 or 3 rimes weekly since

if the above url is too busy go in via
    http://free.grisoft.cz

I use McAfee personal firewall which i get as an aol.com user freebie

I only dropped in to the
se forums because i was doing a search engine watch
"hugh watkins" blogger as the string
MS has made a local launch of search.live.com buying 4 full pages of our Birmingham UK Metro newspapers yesterday

google.com still beats them 4 to one with my own test searches

I am getting ready to write a blog about it

Parallels is so powerful and stable that i really don't need make any use of these forums

You do need to learn to operate and instal correctly
but i am still amazed by the added value to my MacBook Pro

two machines in one and AVG free protects the "litttle brother"

I bought Norton for the Mac in June 2006 and took it back to the Bullring Mac Store and got a refund
it was then incompatable with mac OS 10.4.5 as it was then
and there was no fix on http://www.symantec.com/ for that product

so may i speculate that there is a CPU issue here ????
for the quick fix grab AVG Free 7.5

I have put some screen shots in my blogs
    google
    "hugh watkins" blogger parallels

    enjoy
