I create the virtual machine through the wizard, to use bootcamp partition, as in the manual. Everything goes ok. But when I try to boot it, i get an error:

I can't seem to find anything in the help...

    change

change driver.cab to sp2.cab. simply a renaming issue.

i got past that point, but then i dont get any further.

What driver.cab? Where is it? I already have the Windows XP installed on the Bootcamp partition... is that a problem?

I used TinyXP to slim down my Boot Camp partition and chose to delete the cab file driver archives. Which ones specifically do I need in place for successful use of Boot Camp as a VM? I don't think I have room on the partition to copy them all back to the hard-drive and Parallels doesn't seem to be smart enough to prompt for the install CD.

You can try to copy driver.cab, sp1.cab and sp2.cab (if any) from Windows installation CD drive:/i386/ on your Boot Camp partition in "C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386" directory. That should work.
If you have Windows with SP2, it is enough to copy sp2.cab (~19MB) only.
