Hide $RECYCLE.BIN

When using "Shared Profiles," Parallels places a $RECYCLE.BIN file in the common folders. Is it possible to hide this through the MAC OS or Parallels Desktop for MAC?

If you want to hide the Recycle Bin on both sides, then you have to hide it in Windows XP as per the following Microsoft article:

If you want it to appear only on Windows side, then the only way is disabling Shared Profiles.

 

Ideally, using Shared Profiles would make WINDOWS use the MACs recycle bin...but this doesn't seem to be the case.

 

This appears to be unsolvable. In Vista, Network shares can now take advantage of the recycle bin concept. Windows does this by storing a hidden file in the location of the network share. Windows toggles the hidden file bit for NTFS hiding the special $Recycle.Bin file. However, because the network share is not an NTFS drive, but actually HFS+ (Mac File Structure), there is not bit to toggle. HFS+ does not support a "hidden feature" at the file level beyond the UNIX standard of ".filename."

Therefore it is not possible to hide this file from Vista itself, beacuase the mac drive doesn't support the NTFS hidden bit. And it is not possible to hide this from the MAC because changing the file name is not supported by Windows.

A alternative is to disable the recycle bin on network shares. However, this removes the safety net.

Parallels seems to be a great product. Maybe one day they can figure a way to merge the trash/recycle bins of the two OS's.
