I am having the same issue. Before this issue arose, I had the previous iteration of the 17" 2.16 CPU MB Pro 1 month ago that came out of the box with 1 Gig and a slower 6x DVD DL drive. I was able to install XP under Parallels without a hitch. This week, I upgraded to the latest iteration, that comes with 2 Gigs of memory, 2.33 CPU and an 8x dvd drive. I am unable to install from this new dvd drive. During the installation process, right before the Guest OS is installed, I get a message stating that the Virtual Machine is being tested. After this test, the DVD drive disappear from my desktop.

So, it may be this latest drive is not compatible with the parallel software and is disabled. When I shut the Virtual Machine, the drive reappears.

So, if anyone has any ideas, I am all ears. I suppose, I may be able to copy the content of the disk to a folder and use that to install. But, I would rather install some driver to fix the issue.
Below, I've pasted the output of the drive from System Profiler:

    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:

    Firmware Revision: FAV1
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media:
    Media Type: CD-ROM
    Blank: No
    Erasable: No
    Overwritable: No
    Appendable: No

Problem is resolved. I was installing from the original Parallels CD without first checking for updates. So, get the latest update before trying to use the software.

    So, this was operator error.

Unable to open device/file Default CD/DVD-ROM - mine doesn't work too

i have parallels insalled on two macs -
    1)mac pro
    2)macbook
Both computers have latest mac osx and parallels build 1970 (i think it's the latest stable build)

On macbook i had problems with cd-rom, now i don't have.(don't know why)
On mac pro cd-rom is recognized only when i use it in the following way:
    1) eject cd-rom
    2) connect cd-rom in parallels console
    3) load cd-rom into the physical drive
    4) cd-rom is succesfully recognized in parallels.

Try to test it on your computers and post reply if it works.

Insert CD/DVD not functional/Mac does not recognize CD/DVD

I am using the previous version of Parallels (not the current one)., Everything works fine but I have the following problems:

    When Parallels is running:

    1. the Mac does not recognize a CD or DVD being inserted but it recognizes the Open tray
    key command

    2. the Mac does not recognize the Close command when you try to Close the tray.

    3. the Windows VM does not recognize a blank CD or blank DVD

    4. the Windows VM recognizes a CD or a DVD with data on it.

When I suspend the Windows XP VM, everything works OK on the Mac.

Does anybody else have these problems? I will send the above info to Parallels and hope they have solutions.

As it stands, I have to suspend the Windows VM to run Mac properly as far as CD/DVD operation but I still cannot burn any CD or DVD in the Windows VM.

I had problems with the latest version of Parallels beta and so I reverted to the previous version.

I will try the new Beta soon again and will test the blank CD.DVD operation in the Windows VM and any CD/DVD in the Mac.

Dracula I had all same problem like you.

But now I made a iso file with mac and than I tryed this instead of cd/dvd rom with latest version 1970.

After winxp instalation I installed vm tools under vm section menu bar and all are working now.

I wish I understood what you did. Could you explain it in layman's terms.
    Thanks
