I have a IMAC and installed parallels Desktop 4.0 and put Windows XP Home Edition on my virtual machine. Overall seems to work quite well. My question is probably a fairly basic one tied to my ignorance of the virtual machine - Why do certain icons appear on my "Windows" Desktop for files I have on my MAC - Specifically my Canon printer's onscreen manual appears on my Windows desktop but as the generic windows icon which when I try to open your prompted to choose a program from a list. I also have a firefox.app folder on my desktop even though I didn't install firefox on my virtual machine. There's one other of the Windows icons that asks for program to open as well. Thanks for the feedback

    Hello Chad,

As far as I understood you are wondering about Shared Profile feature. When Shared Profile is enabled, the virtual machine's desktop will display the icons present on Mac OS X Desktop, the My Documents folder will contain items stored in the Documents folder on your Mac. The My Pictures and My Music folders will behave in a similar way.

You can read more about this feature in Parallels Desktop User Guide:

    Thanks

I expected it to be related to something like you described. I guess I need to get more familiar with the whole way the virtual machine works & handles various files
