I posted this in the general discussion and decided it belongs here. I just switched from PCs at my office to Macs. Our contracted independent IT guy came in to do the setup. I have a new MacBook Pro. I have used the iBook G4 in the past. My IT guy installed Parallels. At the office all seems to work well. However, when I get home with the MacBook I cannot get an internet connection on the Windows side. The Mac side is fine since Airport quickly found my home wireless signal. On the Windows side when I look at my Network Connections I see the "Local Area Connection" which also says "Connected, Firewalled, Parallels Network Adapter". So I apparently have internet connection. However, I cannot connect Internet Explorer, Outlook or Timbuktu. There is no internet connection. Can someone help? Or if not, perhaps direct me to the proper forum/website? I guess the question is if I am onine on the Mac side why can't I connect on the Windows side? Again--this is NOT a problem at my office where I also connect with a wireless signal. I did receive an answer in the other forum regarding checking my settings. The settings were as suggested. Thank you, Steve
This is answer I received in other Forum: "With the VM shutdown, click on Edit to edit the VM's configuration. Then, click on the network adapter. If it's set to Bridged Ethernet, make sure it's set to "Default Adaptor". You can also try changing the setting to Shared Networking." It IS set to Default Adaptor. I cannot find where to change the setting to Shared Networking. Steve
I've tried all I know how to do and still can't connect to internet from Windows. I've read the manual, etc. I would try "Shared Networking" only I do not have that option. Would anybody know why?
Need Link Count--would you please give me link to entire Post so I can put this in context? Thanks. Steve
Both Parallels Host-Guest and No Parallels NAT are there. They have IP addresses. My tech guy told me he fixed it at the office with set IP address. He thinks that might be the problem. I have to have this work online where ever I am. Hotels, home, office.
Those two ethernet adapters should not have fixed IP addresses set by your IT. They should be set to using DHCP and let Parallels manages them instead. That is why your Parallels network only works while you are connected to your office network.
Perhaps your Windows VM is configured to use the DNS servers at your office while your Mac is getting that info from the DHCP server. If that is the case then you will have a connection but no name resolution. This is easily tested by pinging a known IP from both the Mac and the VM. If this is the case then add the same DNS servers the Mac is using to your Windows VM.
Temporary Fix? On Windows side, I went to properties for the local area connection and set the tcp/ip item to automatically find IP Address and DNS Server. I had instant internet connection on Windows side. I will have to change back to the set addresses when I go to office. Necessary to get into the server. Not idea - but functional. Steve
