When installing Parallels tools for version 4, I continue to get the message: Error 1304: Error writing to file C\Program Files\ Parallels\Parallels Tools\SIA\ Shared int App.exe verify that you have access to that directory The Parallels tools installations runs all the way to the final screen (copying files) , and it's almost 90% complete and then I get the dreaded Error message. Steps I've taken to resolve the problem: -Uninstalling and Reinstalling Parallels desktop -downloading and installing new .dmg file provided by tech support -Removing Parallels tools folder -Removing Paralles tools registry entry -Deleting Temporary Files -Copy/Pasting the tools setup file directly to the desktop of my VM and installing it from there -rebooting (both vm and host) -turning off anti virus and firewall for installation -Selecting "Install Parallels Tools" from the Virtual Machine label on Menu bar -Using add/remove programs to delete parallels on VM. (It does show up but I get a message that there's no file) There is also no Parallels file at all on the "C" drive, programs in VM. FYI: I'm running Snow Leopard, and WIndows XP Home Edition I've been working on this for three days. Please, any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thanks!
Windows sharing For Windows xp Home edition, you can try to change the permissions. Log on to the computer as an administrator Select Start > Run. Type %allusersprofile% in the Open text box. Then click OK. Right-click the Shared Documents folder and select Properties. In the Shared Documents Properties window, select the Sharing tab. Select Share This Folder. Click Permissions, and select Everyone in Group Or User Names. Select Allow next to Full Control in Permissions, and then click OK. Click OK to close the Shared Documents Properties window. Install Parallels Tools. or Use a Command Prompt window to manually assign the full administrator access that the installer needs. Select Start > Run. Type cmd in the Open text box. Then click OK. A Command Prompt window will open. In the Command Prompt window, type the following commands exactly as they appear below, including all spaces and quotation marks, and press Enter at the end of each line: cacls "c:\Documents and Settings\All Users" /T /E /C /G administrators:F exit Install Parallels Tools.
Still didn't work Thanks for your suggestions. They did not work though. I tried both methods of allowing access rights to everyone. I was able to run the manual method, (method 2), I'm not sure if Method 1 worked because steps 5 & 6 were different on my version (windows xp home). I'm still getting the exact same error. Error 1304: Error writing to file C\Program Files\ Parallels\Parallels Tools\SIA\ Shared int App.exe verify that you have access to that directory I considered completely reinstalling windows, but stopped short of it because my disc is service pack 2 and my virtual machine version is service pack 3. I understand that can cause some problems. I've spent way too much time on this. I'm wondering if I'm better off just completely uninstalling the Parallels program and starting from scratch. I sure hope it doesn't come to that, but I could have easily uninstalled and reinstalled everything in the time I've spent trying to solve this one issue. I really and truly appreciate your help and suggestions. I'm eager to hear more! Thanks so much for your willingness to help!!
Success! Here's the information that was sent to be by Parallels Support. I'm not sure what part of this actually was the culprit, but I followed all the steps and was able to install Parallels tools. I think what was causing the error message were undeleted temporary files. I used Windows Tools to delete them initially, but they didn't do a thorough job. When I deleted ALL the temporary files using the Run command, it pulled up a lot of temp files I thought were already deleted. Anyway, here's the solution from Parallels Tech Support that solved the Error 1304 problem: 1. Start Win XP. Uninstall anti-virus if any. Shut down Win XP. 2. To boot to safe mode, click on the start button to start Win XP and soon after that single click anywhere on the black windows screen -> then press F8. Windows XP will boot in safe mode. 3. Once in safe mode. check Control Panel if you have any Parallels Tools is present in there. If present, please uninstall it. 4. Delete all temporary files. Click on Start -> Run. Type "temp" in Run window and click OK. Delete all the contents of this temp folder. 5. Go to "My Computer" > "C" Drive > "Program Files" > "Parallels" folder and delete the "Parallels Tools" folder, if present. 6. Click the Windows "Start" menu -> "Run" and type "regedit". Hit OK. 7. In Registry Editor, go to "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Parallels" and delete the "Parallels Tools" entry, and go to "My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Parallels" and delete the "Parallels Tools" entry. 8. Reboot Windows Virtual Machine. 9. Now try to install Parallels Tools from the "Virtual Machine" menu on the Parallels Desktop menu bar when Windo
