Compressing Hard Disk 1

I just installed Parallels 5 update with build 9220. It asked to compress my Hard Disk 1 so that it would go from 85GB to 48GB in size. I OK'd it. Since then, 48 hours ago, it has been compressing. There are no indications that Parallels is having any problem as no errors have come up that would require me to do a force-quit. I am tired of waiting for the compression to complete and am wondering what will happen if I Force-Quit or just quit Parallels. Would I just have what I had before or could I lose the virtual machine altogether?\

I need help and as soon as possible.
