I'm sure this answer can be found elsewhere, but I'm asking again: I purchased v5 because I got a great deal on it but like many I've been hesitant to install due to the bugs, and I would really like to avoid moving to VMWare. My question is simple: can I simply move my .pvm file, install v5 then move my .pvm file back? My Parallels VM was created from a BootCamp installation if that matters. Thanks in advance.
what do you mean, move your .pvm file back? Do you mean can you downgrade from 5 to 4? all you'll need to do is to reinstall the tools. I'd be surprised though if you wanted to do that, P5 is quite good these days, in particular with today's update.
I thought the question was pretty simple. I'm asking about upgrading from 4 to 5, hence the title. What I want to know is, can I move my .pvm, install 5 (which removes 4) then move my .pvm back (e.g. will v5 work just fine with my v4 .pvm)? I'm somewhat surprised noone's been able to reply with a simple "yes of course" or "no" ... really? Maybe that's the deal - maybe upgrading isn't that simple? I really thought someone from Parallels could answer this in no time.
yes, you can. installing parallels 5 will replace your parallels 4 application files (and the various parallels extensions), but not your vm. once you've installed 5 you can open up your vm as usual. parallels 5 will just ask you to update the parallels tools (and usually does this automatically). i was confused about your wanting to "move back" the vm. the vm doesn't move at all during this operation. all that happens is that the parallels tools within the vm will be updated; this includes updates to various drivers, including the graphics driver.
