Parallel Desktop stalls(?) configuring VirtualPC 6 - [UPDATE - SUCCESS !!]
Sorry if this has been covered, but I haven't found any matching threads.
Trying to migrate a VirtualPC 6 (v6.1.2) image from my PowerPC iMac (OS X v 10.5.8) to Parallels (v5.0.9310) running on my Intel Macbook Pro (OS X v10.5.8).
I upgraded the Windows XP image under VirtualPC from Windows XP r1 up to the latest Windows XP r3 (took many hours/cycles with Windows Updater). Then I moved the .vpc6 file from the iMac to the Macbook Pro via USB drive.
Used Parallels Transporter to convert the image to a .pvm image.
When Parallels Desktop tries to startup this target image, it starts an automatic configuration session, which it says should take some time. However - how much time should it take? Upon startup, it soon (<15 Minutes) gets to about 20% completion according to the progress bar. It says that it is "Preparing to configure your virtual machine (Step 1 of 4) ...", but after 8+ hours I cannot see any additional progress. The new target .pvm file does not seem to be growing in size, but it's timestamp updates every minute or so. The progress bar does not appear to change.
I have gotten no error messages.
My questions are:
1) How long should this take? (you cannot gracefully interrupt the process)
2) How can I tell if it is really hung, and what else can I do?
I tried in an earlier attempt to go into manual reconfiguration mode, but Windows seemed to crash immediately on trying to boot, then return to auto mode.
Since that failed, I cleaned up all remnants of that image, brought a new image over from VirtualPC with a new name, etc. and started from scratch.
Thanks,
Tim
[UPDATE - SUCCESS!!!]
Thanks to the response to my original post, I have successfully migrated my Virtual PC 6 XP sp3 image to Parallels version 5!!.
The poster pointed out that VPC 6 migration is not explicitly supported with Parallels Transporter. Per the suggestion, I uninstalled Virtual Machine Additions from my Virtual PC 6 virtual machine via Windows Add/Remove Program, and merged my changes on shutdown on the VPC6 VM (All on the source iMac system). I moved that image over to my Parallels system (Macbook Pro) via a USB external drive and used Transporter to import the image. The import process was rather painless this time and took about 30 minutes. I did have to add parallels tools to the image, as well as add a network adapter (default), and reactivate XP with Microsoft, but all that happened smoothly and online (versis calling Microsoft to activate).
Thanks for the help!
