Hi, Here's all the relevant info upfront: - Macbook Pro 2.53GHz 4Gb RAM running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 - Boot Camp partition with Windows XP Pro SP3 - Parallels 4.3848 - I'm using the boot camp partition as a VM - I have two hardware profiles in my Windows XP, one for Bootcamp and one for Parallels. Problem: - Every odd VM startup crashes Snow Leopard! And this is before windows starts to boot. In more detail: - I boot my Mac in Snow Leopard, and run Parallels to use my boot camp partition... everything is fine. - I shut down WinXP and the VM closes just fine. - I shut down my Mac. - I boot up my Mac (usually the next day) and as soon as I start the the VM (for the boot camp partition) I get a kernel panic and Snow Leopard crashes requesting me to force shutdown and restart. Note that the crash occurs before WinXP even starts to boot. - I restart, and then I start the VM again... everything boots fine. - And I can repeat this process over and over again!! Reboot - Crash - Reboot - AllOk - Reboot - Crash - and so on! So, I'm guessing that something is not being properly cleaned up after I close Parallels when it's running just fine and that stays there until I start it again, which then causes it to crash. It also looks like a crash will cleanup whatever was messed up before because after a crash I can open the VM normally! As anyone seen this problem? Any solutions? (I've searched and searched the forums, knowledge base and web in general without any luck) One of the kernel panic reports is attached. Thanks in advance for any help!
I believe that you definitely need to send this kernel panic to apple (as it suggests after restart). Looks like it is mostly an Apple problem. The panic occurs at the moment of unmount the Bootcamp partition before start it using exclusively in Parallels Desktop. We see this panic first time, but I think that ejecting (unmounting) Bootcamp volume in Finder before starting VM will help this.. (and if it will also cause KernelPanic, than it is definitely an Apple issue)
Hi, I've been sending all the reports to Apple. I have not tried the unmount suggestion because following a tip on another thread (not related to my issue but also about an OSX crash when running Parallels) I decided to update MacFUSE from 2.0.3 to the beta version 2.1.5, which looks like it solved the problem!? I've so far booted the VM five times with no problems. Thanks for the quick reply anyway...
OOOPS! Spoke too soon I guess... just had another crash with a similar report. I'll try the unmount before starting the VM I guess.
Ok... I've been using it for a week while unmounting the Windows drive by hand before starting the VM and it looks like it works. I have not had a single crash since. I guess I'm off to writing a script to do this automatically. Parallels team... thanks for the help. However, you should get this fixed, now that it looks like you know what causes the problem.
Ok... I've tried a bunch of stuff and I can't get a script to unmount the boot camp partition at login. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance!
