I'm trying to expand the size of my hard drive. I navigated to the configuration screen, and then clicked on edit next to 'expanding disk' I use the slider to increase the size (from 19.5gb to 35gb) and leave 'resize file system' and 'expanding disk' checked. Then I hit apply. At which point nothing seems to happen. Apply and reset are grayed out, but if I let it run for a few hours nothing seems to happen. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Duplicate the original .hdd in the Finder and see if the duplicate is usable by right clicking the duplicate and selecting Open With... -> Parallels Mounter. If it is, quit Parallels Desktop, duplicate the duplicate (to save it as a backup), then run Parallels Desktop again, set the hard disk to the first duplicate and try to resize the first duplicate. Move the original and the backup to somewhere else for safe keeping. Maybe there's a problem with the resize file system step. You could try without that step but then you would need to resize the partition and the file system in Windows and you may need to boot from a different Windows to do that.
Hmm. Not seeing the hdd file. Where would that be or how could I search for it? Or is it the .pvm file?
The .pvm file is actually a bundle or package file. A bundle or package file is a folder with a special flag set that makes it behave more like a file. You can right click it and select "Show Package Contents" to look inside. .hdd files are also bundles.
OK, I found the hdd and made a copy, double checked it worked, then made another copy. Still didn't seem to work. Am I doing it correctly? I launched Parallels, went the the VM list, then right clicked and selected "configure". Under the hard disk choice, I choose the new copy and then resize to the new amount. Once I do this, all the choices except for cancel gray out and then that's it. Nothing else happens even if I leave the machine for hours. Once I hit cancel to try to stop the process that takes a while for it to eventually cancel. Any suggestions?
Check the disk for errors in Windows before resizing it? Otherwise, resize the disk without resizing the file system. Then resize the partition and file system in Windows.
