    Hi

I have Parallels Desktop 5 Build 9308 with winXP Prof. in it.

I'am using a CAD-App that needs the following extensions:

    GL_ARB_depth_texture [X]
    GL_ARB_shadow [X]
    GL_ARB_PBuffer [X]
    GL_ARB_multitexture [X]
    GL_ARB_GLSL [X]
    GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two [X]
    GL_ARB_framebuffer_object [X]
    GL_ARB_texture_float [X]

So when I start parallels none of this extensions are checked...

Can anybody help me to get this run on my MBP.

    I don't understand because parallels 5 has already OpenGL 2.1 ?!?

    Please give me a hint.

    Hi feribobi,
    some additional information is needed:
    1. Guest operating system
    2. Name of CAD application in question
    3. Probably, weblink to trial version

    Hi feribobi,
the issue has been checked by developers, here is what was replied:

OpenGL is not initialized properly, as PaletteCAD requires PFD_GENERIC_TYPE when selecting format of OpenGL framebuffer. Thus, Microsoft GDI Generic is being initialized, which supports only OpenGL version 1.1. The issue is not related to Parallels Desktop.

By the way, we have checked the issue on host Windows XP SP 3 (GeForce 8600GT and GeForce 7050) - the behaviour is the same.

    So Iche...
I thank You but it doesn't make me really happy.

So long I will use WinXP native on my MBP with Bootcamp, because this way Open GL is working right....
...until Parallels will decide to launch an upgrade with OpenGl 3.0 well supported....
    ...until the day...

wait : Your developers don't turn on the hardware-support in the options menue and they don't started a new file.
That is the case when you get this failure...
Please forward to them the picture in my old post..

    Skoal,

    feri

    Hi Adam,

I think that now it should work well with PD6, but PaletteCad has to initiate the right Renderer...

I ran the Everest-Tool and get some of this information:

    Anbieter Parallels and NVIDIA Corporation
Renderer Parallels using NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT OpenGL Engine
    Version 2.1 NVIDIA-1.6.18

but PaletteCad only shows the bad GDI Generic....like in the pictures before...

So stand by my friend, I have already sent a mail to PaletteCad, so I will keep You here informed!

    Thanks for answer.

I also try to speek with palettecad as a distributor PaletteCAD in Poland.

But if in bootcamp it is running without problem I think that problem is in Parallels 5 and also 6

    Need Answer form Parallels

    Hi

Can somebody form developer of parallels version 6 give us some information why it not working on version 6 also or just check.

I relly need that PalleteCAD start working normal on Parallers virtual machine.

On bootcamp is vorking fantastic on virtual machine not. So i think the problem is in Parallels 6 only.

Please give me an answer ASAP

    Adam,

It is unclear from your post how exactly is PaletteCAD "not working" in Parallels?
The very fact that it chooses GDI generic pixel format is not a problem in itself. It's a decision made by PaletteCAD developers.

    Hi

    Look for screens above

Function below are disable on screen but for proper workink should be enable.

I don't know why in Paralles they are disable , on bootcamp are enabled.

    GL_ARB_depth_texture [X]
    GL_ARB_shadow [X]
    GL_ARB_PBuffer [X]
    GL_ARB_multitexture [X]
    GL_ARB_GLSL [X]
    GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two [X]
    GL_ARB_framebuffer_object [X]
    GL_ARB_texture_float [X]

These are not functions. Apparently these strings represent OpenGL extensions that PaletteCAD detects. Strictly speaking, GL_ARB_PBuffer and GL_ARB_GLSL are not even valid extension strings, but I assume these should mean pbuffers and GLSL support. Let me assure you all these are supported by Parallels Desktop, other programs and our internal tests make use of them.
From the images above it is clear that PaletteCAD chooses GDI generic pixel format for its contexts, which means it uses Microsoft software implementation of OpenGL. This generic implementation is understandably limited, this is what the Info box reports. As I-che stated above, we determined that PaletteCAD has made a deliberate decision not to use accelerated OpenGL pixel format. This is not because of lack of support for those extensions in Parallels Desktop.
Whether or not those extensions are crucial for PaletteCAD functionality is unclear. I'd say that since it choosed GDI generic pixel format, its functionality doesn't suffer in any significant way. This is why I asked you what exactly doesn't work. You should probably contact PaletteCAD support to clarify that.

    Important

    Dear Parallel support team,

My name is Frank Kobs and I am responsible for Palette CAD software development.
So I would like to give some comments in this threat. I tried to register myself here, but - for some reason - I got no reply so far, so I asked Adam Wilenski to post it.

The assumption that Palette CAD selects a generic pixelformat is only partly correct.
Since we had made bad experiences with OpenGL drivers in the past decades, we have a setting in the software to control this behavior.

You have to go to "Settings" and tag "Use hardware acceleration" and restart the program.

So the most suitable for hardware acceleration is:

    PFD_DRAW_TO_WINDOW | PFD_DOUBLEBUFFER | PFD_SUPPORT_OPENGL | PFD_GENERIC_ACCELERATED | PFD_SWAP_COPY;
    24 color bits
    >=24 depth bits
    >= 8 stencil bits
    >=64 accumulation bits

If you forgot to turn hardware acceleration on, the
    PFD_DRAW_TO_BITMAP|PFD_GENERIC_FORMAT pixelformat is choosen.

For some more advanced rendering modes we need following extensions:

    ARB_depth_texture
    ARB_shadow
    WGL_ARB_pbuffer
    ARB_multitexture
    ARB_fragment_shader
    ARB_vertex_shader
    ARB_shader_objects
    ARB_shading_language_100
    ARB_texture_non_power_of_two
    EXT_framebuffer_object
    ARB_texture_float

If you like I can send you an english version of the software to test this

    With best regards,

    Frank Kobs
