mic not working--XP and Parallels 5

Though the audio to the speaks and USB Flash Drives seem to work, I can't seem to get my '09 Macbook Pro in XP to see the build-in microphone. I've done searches here and saw advice to scan for hardware changes in the Device Manager. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to have worked.

Any other suggestions? Thanks ahead of time for any help!

 

Check your settings:

In Mac OS X:
System Preferences -> Sound -> Input

In Parallels Desktop:
Virtual Machine -> Configure -> Hardware -> Sound -> Input -> Default

In Windows XP:
Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio -> Sound recording -> Parallels Sound Card. Also the same for Voice -> Voice recording.

 

Thank you very much for the help. Unfortunately "Parallels Sound Card" does not apprear in either the Sound recording or Voice drop dows for me. Any thoughts why or how to fix this?

 

I was looking at Parallels Desktop 6. Maybe Parallels Desktop 5 uses a different sound device?

Are the Paralllels sound settings set correctly (connected enabled)?

Did you try reinstalling Parallels Tools?

 

Thank you again for taking the time to help me. I double checked and the Paralllels sound settings are set as you mentioned. I should have said that the drop down in the Control Panel for Audio and Voice both have only 1 option, "Intel(r) Integrated Audio".

I believe I just reinstalled the Parallels Tools (previously had never heard of it). Did a search for it in Parallels help, inserted the Parallels install disk, and let it do its thing. Restarted XP, then the Macbook Pro, but there's no difference. Intel(r) Integrated Audio is still the only option from the drop down.

Any thoughts from here?

 

I think Intel(r) Integrated Audio is the proper choice for Parallels Desktop 5. Are you unable to record audio from it?

You may need to select the built-in microphone in the Mac OS X System Preferences -> Sound -> Input list.

 

Unfortunately I still can't record anything. Just tried switching to the built-in microphone in the Mac OS X System Preferences and still no go. Tried the other settings (Built-in Microphone, Built-in Input, & Null device) in Virtual Machine -> Input ->. None worked.

Is there anything else I can try?

 

Did you check the sound input level in System Preferences -> Sound -> Input to make sure that audio is coming in from the microphone on the Mac side?

I used Ventrilo to test sound input in my Windows XP virtual machine on Parallels Desktop 6. It has a Monitor button which shows sound levels. It has a Test button which will playback what is recorded while the Hotkey is pressed. You also have to make sure the Recording (Input) volumes are not set at zero on the Windows side.

 

Sorry for the delay. It's been a rough week. But I think it's finally solved!!! You were right on the money when you suggested:

That was set to 0, and after adjusting it all is fine. Sorry, I really should have thought of that before. However, it's been so long since I messed with those settings that I completely forget they existed. Also, my PC laptop must have had its default volume higher b/c I didn't have to mess with it to record audio. Strange that the default using Parallels was 0, but I should have known to check and feel pretty stupid right now.
