Perhaps I'm being optimistic, but I was wondering if anyone's got the preview of Windows 8 running under Parallels?

I got it running but the tools installs seems to screw it up. Should know shortly whether that'll work or not.

    Installing Win 8 Dev Preview

I only got the installation of Windows 8 Dev preview to work after I discovered that I should not use the express installation feature in Parallels Desktop 7 on my Mac. I haven't gotten to the point to where I need to test the installation of the VM tools, but since people are complaining about that I'll just refrain from installing the tools once the installer is completely finished.

    Parallels 6 or Parallels 7

Are people in this thread using Parallels 6 or Parallels 7 for the Win 8 VM install? I only have Parallels 6 and wondered if I needed to upgrade to Parallels 7 to get this to work.

    Thanks.

Can't seem to get it to work

I haven't been able to get it working under Parallels 7... it installs, reboots, sets up devices with the green background... reboots and all I get is a black screen.

Haven't even gotten to install parallels tools.

I've tried autoconfig and config manually..

I've found that Parallels has a problem with virtual DVD drive while it is located on SATA bus.
It simply does not remounts connected media. Thus installation of tools is not possible,
if VM have not booted with prl-tools.iso connected. To avoid this issue, use IDE locations,
    for virtual DVD drive.

I can't even get it to install, just get a Windows Boot Manager screen with file: msrpc.sys Error:0xc0000017 and says the file is missing or corrupt.

Tried with 2 different disks, one burnt on the Mac the other on my desktop PC. Have installed it with no issues on my Desktop, so odd that I'm getting this error in Parallels.

DVD drive is working fine, so don't think the issue is there

Ignore my last post, didn't check the configuration settings. It was only set to 128MB RAM. Increased it to 4GB and it's installing now :)

I have successfully installed the preview of Win 8. However, as reported by others, the Parallels Tools installation causes the system to black-screen after the tools install begins. So long as PT are not installed, it seems to run fine. I plan to mess with the tools install in more detail to see what I can dig up, if anything.

I am running the latest build of Parallels 6, btw.

    From http://forum.parallels.com/showpost.php?p=459602&postcount=27

Workaround for issue with black screen in Windows 8 with guest tools installed.

    Shut down virtual machine.
Open [Virtual Machine Configuration > Hardware > Boot Order] and locate [Boot flags].
    In [Boot flags] write:

    devices.video.pci_device_id=0x5005;

Run virtual machine. Install Parallels Tools (if not yet).

Known issues with that workaround: Coherence, Dynamic Resolution, Smart Mouse (Sliding Mouse) will not work.

However, Smart Mouse (Sliding Mouse) can be enabled manually.
Open [Virtual Machine Configuration > Options > Advanced] and set [Smart Mouse] to [On].
This will allow Smart Mouse to work in Windows 8 even when described workaround applied.

Also use "Windows 7" OS type for Windows 8.

works fine for me with tools with the fix...

    now i have a windows 8 question...
Metro mode is the tiled screen. most dont do anything... the desktop tile does but socialise and weather and just about everything does nothing.

Also how the heck are you suppose to shut down Windows 8?

I hear you on the apps, there's not much cause for fanfare there. However, the interface looks promising and I love all the new stuff around the Explorer UI, such as being able to pause file copying and the telemetry stuff you get in Task Manager.

For shutting down, there's a few ways. The one I'm using the most is CTRL+ALT+DEL and use the power button in the bottom right of the screen.

    A Longshot, but ...

..is there any hope of getting a fix for the Parallel Tools graphics driver for Windows 8. At the moment, with the basic Windows driver the thing is pretty much unusable and I'm using it to develop on. It's pretty slow and I can't resize it. I upgraded from 6 to 7 hoping things would be better; but no, still broke.

Please guys, if anyone is listening, it would be a huge help, not to mention a savvy business decision, because if you're looking for a VM solution then the one that runs Windows 8 would surely be the weapon of choice. :)

So, how does Parallels 7 act different if Windows 8 is installed under "Other Windows" versus "Windows 7"?

I've found that if you configure it as 'Windows 7' vs 'Other windows' performance is greatly improved.

cagg, I did just that... You are right, a drastic improvement in performance... However, I did notice one thing... When I enter the "Weather" app, I am given no options to exit it... Do you know why? I recall that under "Other Windows" I always had the bottom toolbar to go back to "Start".

I've been wrestling with the black screen and tools install, but hey guys, the fix is right above from Wonder Mice. Once I applied the video boot flag as directed, it booted up perfectly AND pretty much all of the tiled apps now work, they didn't do anything before AND the sound works too! Plus there' s a bunch of stuff on the screens that didn't appear before and suddenly, it all starts to make sense. Just do it, it IS the fix for this problem and takes all of 5 seconds. Thanks Wonder Mice!
