I'm looking for insight from experienced users with a problem that I've encountered after upgrading from version 6 to version 7. I have OS Lion on my one year old iMAC. I never had any problems with versions 5 or 6, but now after the upgrade I get the following error when starting Windows 7 or Windows XP:

    Unable to connect CD/DVD 1.
A file or device required for the operation of CD/DVD 1 does not exist or is used by another process, or you have no permission to access it. The virtual machine will continue running, but the device will be disconnected.

Any thoughts or solutions? Just please don't say that'l teach ya for upgrading!

I am having exactly the same problem.
Was working fine on parallels 6 and OS lion 10.7

I upgraded to Parallels 7 today, and now it cant access my DVD???

I should learn my lesson and not bother to upgrade a product thats working perfectly ok!!

Just got off the phone with tech support. Do the following:

    1. Start Parallels Desktop without starting the virtual machine
    2. On the virtual machine list that pops up, right click on the virtual machine that is involved in the error (if you have multiple windows installs then you'll need to perform these steps for each one)
    3. Click on configure
    4. Click on the hardware tab
    5. click on CD/DVD 1
    6. Remove CD/DVD 1 by clicking on the (-) at the bottom of the hardware list
    7. Next click on the (+) at the bottom of the hardware list and in the drop down list choose "CD/DVD"
    8. That's it, start your VM as usual and the problem should be gone
