Hi, I've read through several threads that detail various networking issues but I haven't yet found the answer to my problem.

I'm running WinXP Pro (SP2) on Parallels for Mac (1970) using a bridged ethernet connection to the default adaptor. With the XP firewall on (default settings) I cannot connect to the internet; with the XP firewall off, there is no problem other than being vulnerable to the big, bad world.

Does anyone know which port(s) or option(s) I should select on the XP firewall to
    (1) allow XP to connect to the internet,
    (2) allow XP VM to be accessed by other computers on LAN,
    (3) disallow pretty much everything else for security?

    Thanks!

What do you intend to connect to the internet with? Examples: ftp, telnet, ssh, im, voip, http, ldap, mp3 player, smtp, imap, pop...

Each has a port requirement, and the standard ports are well identified at various places on the 'net.

Thanks for the reply. I want to be able to use http, ssh, smtp, ipop, as well as file sharing with other Macs and PCs on my LAN.

I can't imagine that by default the XP firewall blocks all incoming/outgoing traffic, preventing users from viewing web pages. I presumed that the XP firewall is denying traffic through whichever port(s) that Parallels uses to give the GuestOS access to my HostOS connection. Is this not the case?

    Thanks!

    oops...

Oops, "ipop" was supposed to be imap (not pop) in case that matters.

System preferences / sharing. Enable whatever services you want to use. Enjoy.

    system prefs?

I'm not having any troubles with the Mac firewall, just the XP firewall. I'm wondering whether there is a certain port (or maybe the Host-Guest/NAT IP adresses) or option that I can enable on the XP firewall to allow XP to allow parallels ethernet bridging to work properly.
