I don't know what brand of external hard drive I am using but it isn't recognized by my Mac Mini. When I run parallels it does not show up in My Computer.
    1. Am I looking in the wrong place?
    2. Is there some trick I need to know about recognizing usb storage?

Assuming you are doing everything right, most times for me it is a matter of being partient as either XP or OS 10 scan the drive. After you plug it in or turn it on, watch the drive's light. If it is flashing red or orange (anything but green) then just be patient. If it is a solid red, it might be stuck. OS 10 gives me problems with my NTFS drive sometimes with a solid red light, even though my FAT32 and HFS partitions have been registered an appear on the desktop. Without all the partitions on the disk registered, the system just hangs, so I have to hard reset the computer or turn the drive off, and usually get it going in XP first then try again in OS 10.
