Please can someone help a total noob here?

I installed BootCamp way before I was aware of Parallels, and used my XP install CD to create the windows OS. Then I discovered Parallels, and was unaware that it could run XP from BootCamp - so I installed XP again. This involved begging Microsoft for a new activation code.

Then I discovered that it's foolish (if not impossible) to try and control 2 XP installations, and tried to get Parallels to boot using BootCamp. I got the attached message. I figured that it's maybe because I had two XPs installed - so I deleted the "non-BootCamp" one.

But I STILL get the attached message.
I'm verrrrry reluctant to delete the BootCamp partition and start all over, cos not only have I spent weeks loading all my graphics apps on it, but also there's a good chance that Microsoft will refuse to give me a new activation code.

I've looked thru the forum, and see that you can edit the PVS file - but please please please can someone take me through what I should do, how I find the correct name for the "correct" partition, etc etc - bearing in mind that I'm about as technical as a baby newt!

    Hope you can help....

Oh, and I HAVE looked through the Parallels PDF guide but can find nothing useful to help. It just refers you to a FAQ on the Parallels website.

Hi, I couldn't see your attached image but it sounds like I have the same problems as yourself.

Thing is I booted from my Windows XP (Boot Camp) partiton last night and it ran fine after Parallels did its thing. Now it won't let me start the virtual machine. I'll try re-booting -in Boot Camp- later and see what the outcome is.

FWIW I've only one other Parallels VM and thats a Vista one, which I don't mind losing, its not the point of Parallels to only be able to run one VM.

    Cheers

I also had this problem recently with my 24" iMac after upgrading to build 3186. Purely by accident (and out of some desparation) I found the problem was fixed by pulling out all the USB cables connected in the back of the iMac, but with the sole exception of the standard keyboard. Don't ask me why or how it worked, it just did.

    Thanks both....
At least I don't feel like a total twerp now! I'm almost glad that I'm not the only one with the problem.....

Sadly, though, I have no spare USB cables to unplug from the Mac, so I'll have to see if anyone else can help. This is frustrating!

Not sure exactly what I did but the problem is fixed for me.

    Steps I took were.
    uninstalled and reinstalled Parallels
Shut down and booted into boot camp partition
Restarted Parallels, on doing this Parallels reinstalled Tools and booted normally.

    HTH
    Cheers

    JonnieJ - WA-HEYYY.... you're right.
Cheers for that. Annoyingly, I found the solution too, at pretty much the same time as you. Must be some kinda bug somewhere. Oh well, as long as it works (at least til the next upgrade!).

    Thanks all,
    Dave
